The body of Larry Whitest, age 57 of 4715 A 1st St. W in Auburndale<br />

was found in the early morning hours of February 8, 2010 in an<br />

Unsolved<br />

M URDER<br />

Files open field in front of GTI, Inc. 1250 Hobbs Road in Auburndale.<br />

Mr. Whitest was dressed only in shorts. A shirt and h<strong>at</strong> were<br />

found near his body. There were no obvious signs to indic<strong>at</strong>e how he died. The<br />

medical examiner has determined his de<strong>at</strong>h was not contributed to n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />

causes. Police are not releasing the exact cause of de<strong>at</strong>h due to the on-going<br />

investig<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Police do not have any leads in the case and are asking for help from<br />

anyone with inform<strong>at</strong>ion. Anyone who knows Mr. Whitest or has knowledge<br />

of his whereabouts from Sunday morning, February 7, 2010 through Monday<br />

morning, February, 8, 2010 when he was discovered deceased, is urged to<br />

contact police.<br />

Hit-and-Run Case Resulting in De<strong>at</strong>h<br />

Polk County Sheriff’s Traffic Homicide Investig<strong>at</strong>ors are<br />

seeking the public’s help in an ongoing hit-and-run investig<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

th<strong>at</strong> resulted in the de<strong>at</strong>h of an elderly man.<br />

At approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 8:05 p.m. on Sunday, February 21,<br />

2010, PCSO deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run<br />

traffic crash <strong>at</strong> 3300 Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road in Bartow,<br />

during which a 73-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.<br />

The vehicle was traveling south on Old Bartow Eagle<br />

Lake Road, south of Griffin Road. At the same time, the<br />

victim, Carlos Fernandez Sr., age 74, was walking south on<br />

Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road, transporting a stove on a dolly<br />

along the edge of the southbound lane. The front of the vehicle<br />

struck Mr. Fernandez. The driver did not stop.<br />

Mr. Fernandez was transported to Lakeland Regional<br />

Medical Center in critical condition. He has been hospitalized<br />

since the night of the crash, and on October 8, 2010, Mr.<br />

Fernandez died as a result of<br />

injuries he sustained in the crash.<br />

The vehicle is described as a<br />

GM (General Motors) passenger<br />

car, possibly mid 80’s to mid 90’s<br />

model. The color of the car has<br />

been described as “light colored,”<br />

possibly beige, grey, or blue. The<br />

car was described as being in poor<br />

condition. The car was last seen<br />

traveling south on Old Bartow<br />

Eagle Lake Road.<br />

Mr. Fernandez was well known in the area, frequently<br />

walking the same route where he was struck by the car.<br />

Deputies are hoping someone saw something suspicious or has<br />

some inform<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> will lead to an arrest in this case.<br />
