Auburndale Police Seeking Information in Homicide

The body of Larry Whitest, age 57 of 4715 A 1st St. W in Auburndale
was found in the early morning hours of February 8, 2010 in an
Unsolved
M URDER
Files open field in front of GTI, Inc. 1250 Hobbs Road in Auburndale.
Mr. Whitest was dressed only in shorts. A shirt and hat were
found near his body. There were no obvious signs to indicate how he died. The
medical examiner has determined his death was not contributed to natural
causes. Police are not releasing the exact cause of death due to the on-going
investigation.
Police do not have any leads in the case and are asking for help from
anyone with information. Anyone who knows Mr. Whitest or has knowledge
of his whereabouts from Sunday morning, February 7, 2010 through Monday
morning, February, 8, 2010 when he was discovered deceased, is urged to
contact police.

Hit-and-Run Case Resulting in Death
Polk County Sheriff’s Traffic Homicide Investigators are
seeking the public’s help in an ongoing hit-and-run investigation
that resulted in the death of an elderly man.
At approximately 8:05 p.m. on Sunday, February 21,
2010, PCSO deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run
traffic crash at 3300 Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road in Bartow,
during which a 73-year-old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.
The vehicle was traveling south on Old Bartow Eagle
Lake Road, south of Griffin Road. At the same time, the
victim, Carlos Fernandez Sr., age 74, was walking south on
Old Bartow Eagle Lake Road, transporting a stove on a dolly
along the edge of the southbound lane. The front of the vehicle
struck Mr. Fernandez. The driver did not stop.
Mr. Fernandez was transported to Lakeland Regional
Medical Center in critical condition. He has been hospitalized
since the night of the crash, and on October 8, 2010, Mr.
Fernandez died as a result of
injuries he sustained in the crash.
The vehicle is described as a
GM (General Motors) passenger
car, possibly mid 80’s to mid 90’s
model. The color of the car has
been described as “light colored,”
possibly beige, grey, or blue. The
car was described as being in poor
condition. The car was last seen
traveling south on Old Bartow
Carlos Fernandez Sr.
Eagle Lake Road.
Mr. Fernandez was well known in the area, frequently
walking the same route where he was struck by the car.
Deputies are hoping someone saw something suspicious or has
some information that will lead to an arrest in this case.
