February 2007 Energy Magazine 3

Greetings from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
Welcome to the February issue of Energy Magazine…
Just yesterday I returned from a ten day visit to the Hawaiian islands where a Level 5 class that I taught was sandwiched
by a few days on either end for exploring this beauteous land. I gratefully embraced some quality downtime and an opportunity
for adventure and healing. Taking time for self-care is a major principle in the development of the Healing Touch
Practitioner so the ten days without a computer was a welcome change and respite.
One of my most treasured experiences occurred as I was leaving a quiet, pristine beach with 20 foot magnificent waves to
drive to the airport for the departure back to Colorado. I said to my friend who was walking ahead of me for this (literally)
last minute of my time on the beach “Oh, I wish I had a container to take some sand home with me”. Beverly was just fifteen
feet in front of me leading the way back to the parking lot. In less than thirty seconds, she stopped and starting laughing
out loud as I approached her with curiosity. I followed her eyes as she looked straight down to her feet to see a one gallon
clear plastic bag ¾ buried under the sand generously brimming over with the beautiful tan-colored pure wet sand which
was being washed over by the waves. My request was literally answered in approximately thirty seconds, not only with the
container, but with the contents already supplied of what I wanted the container to hold. This event was the final exclamation
mark of a life-enhancing ten days in this nurturing, etheric group of magical islands. I gleefully dug the bag out of the
sand, released part of its contents and resealed the bag for travel back to Boulder, Colorado.
I wish to impart to you the message the bag of sand had for me….Out of joy, gratitude and sincere desire for fullness of
life and experience of beauty, express your heart’s wishes to “the Universe” (or whatever word works for you) and be open
to surprises and answered prayers of unexpected and abundant dimensions…
As I read this month’s articles of Energy Magazine I perceived the same themes I associate with my “bag of sand” story.
Each author in writing about how HT changed his/her life was open to life’s offerings, finding lessons, beauty, truth and goodness
in people, things and situations and each described surprise gifts that we know come to those with an open heart, mind
and body. Thank you to Judy, Anne, Dave, Jackie, Marilee and Michaela for your inspiring stories of Healing Touch.
Staying Conscious
Staying Conscious in
an Unconscious World
by Michaela Donohue, RN, CNM, MS, CHTP/I
Are you one of those people who
likes to zone out during your Healing
Touch session? Do you go off into la
la land? Or is it your partner or friend
or client who likes that and who,
perhaps, has no idea of his or her
physical body, where its boundaries
lie, how each part feels?
I write this in the middle of the night on the one-year anniversary
of my fall into unconsciousness, a fall in which I broke
my arm leading to a chronic pain condition of the central
nervous system. Not fun, I assure you, but resolving.
It was a rainy, windy day and I raced outside to do something
I had forgotten to do. The wind blew my umbrella
inside out--it was that kind of a day. And I slipped, fell, and
felt the kind of pain that told me it was a break.
About a month later, I got in touch with my intuition and knew
it was a lack of consciousness that caused my fall. That lack
of consciousness still causes problems. And lately I’ve been
dealing with pain in my hip. I know that pain is telling me
something…that part of my body is unconscious and the
pain is the messenger calling me to consciousness.
I live in the DC area, an area of great unconsciousness.
When you walk down the street it is common to note the
signs of bodily unconsciousness…the head leads and the
rest of the body follows. The person is deep in thought,
probably the usual random thoughts, the ones that tend to
take over, even during meditation.
Last night I was awakened by a dream in which my brother-in-law’s
partner was telling me she was worried about
him. She had noticed that he was developing that telltale
hump in his upper back. She was afraid he would fall. I
agreed and knew it was important to teach him some ways
of bringing this awareness to his body so he wouldn’t fall
and be disabled.
When I woke, I began to write. The following are some
suggestions (for myself as well as for you) to bring us to
greater bodily consciousness and therefore to greater
awareness and mindfulness.
When “out-for-a-walk,” practice focusing on each sense…
seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting. Focus on
one sense at a time. It would probably be easiest to start
with seeing, but for our purpose…begin with feeling.
Start with the toes, bringing your attention to them, only
the toes. Which can you feel? Which are unconscious?
Move gradually up the legs, one at a time, noticing all
aspects including the calves, back and front of the knees,
front and back of the thighs, hips, buttocks and so on.
Continue until you have brought attention to the whole
body, one aspect at a time. Keep the other senses diminished,
focusing only on feeling different aspects of the
continued on page 7
Staying Conscious
body. Then, if it’s a very long walk, try only seeing, only
hearing (first close and then far away sounds), only tasting
and only smelling.
Use your massage table to give to and receive from your
partner. Notice what his or her touch feels like, what pressure
you like to give or receive, focusing first on just one
part of the body. Then compare it to another part. Don’t try
to do the whole body at one sitting. Ask for what you need.
Stay aware the whole time. Take turns.
If you have no partner, get on the table and imagine you
are being touched in particular areas. Can you imagine
someone pulling on your big toe? Do you have consciousness
in your big toe? What about your lower back ribs on
the left? Move the area to bring awareness, and then focus
on it when it is still. What sensations do you feel?
experiences with body consciousness. We’ll follow-up and
perhaps print your ideas in our next article. What have you
tried? What works for you? Do you think this is important,
why or why not? E
Michaela’s Bio:
Michaela is a Healing Touch practitioner and instructor in
the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Her career has
included many years in the health care field as a nurse,
nurse-midwife, university faculty member, co-founder of a
healing center, writer, researcher and presenter at national
conferences. Since she was introduced to therapeutic
touch in the mid-eighties and healing touch in the early
nineties, energy healing has been a focus of her work.
Healing Touch is the center around which her use of other
complementary modalities, especially sound, circle. She
loves teaching and mentoring students and brings all of
who she is to her work in the world.
Receive an off-the-body HT session with your eyes closed.
Give verbal feedback to the practitioner about your physical
awareness. Were the practitioner’s hands in the area you felt
shifts? Could you tell where his/her hands were? Did certain
parts of your body become more conscious during the session?
Did pain diminish? Increase? Be sure to let go of judgments
and even attempts to understand or give meaning to
your observations. Use one session just for this.
Michaela has served Healing Touch International as a
member of the Certification Review Panel and continues to
promote the mission of spreading healing light worldwide.
Take a yoga class and try to spend the entire class time on
awareness. Notice how often your attention wanders.
Notice what parts of your body are asking for your attention.
Spend some time each day massaging yourself—perhaps
only 5 minutes. Focus this week on your feet, next week
your lower legs, the following on your belly, etc.
We are here at this time in physical body. There is a reason
we were given this body. Appreciate it and love it. Pay attention
to all its messages. Notice any areas that you reject. Be
compassionate when it is having problems. Befriend it and
ask its help when you need it to perform in a certain way.
Forgive it when it doesn’t meet your expectations.
Taking a
Healing Touch
Level 5 Class
HT Level 5 Class
Completion, Celebration & Commitment
“
Level 5 was a real fulfillment for me...I found various support groups. There
were many connections, synchronicities and openings for me through
these groups. I used the manifestation wheel from Level 4. This program is designed
to bring magic into your life...We come to see that we are beings of Light that can
help heal the world."
- Level 5 student
Level 5 is a time of completion, celebration and commitment to continued progress and
excellence. Assignments which were completed during the apprenticeship period are
submitted and evaluated for course completion. This session is designed to acknowledge
the student’s work and offer constructive suggestions for continued improvement.
Celebration occurs as the student is acknowledged, appreciated and validated for the
dedicated work accomplished during the apprenticeship period. Upon satisfactory completion
of all work, the student receives a Certificate of Completion for the Healing Touch
Program and achieves the Healing Touch Practitioner status. (HTP)
This class also prepares students to understand the certification process and criteria.
Further steps toward certification as a Healing Touch Practitioner is optional. Level 5
assists the student in evaluating their progress and level of commitment to the certification
process.
Who can take a
Level 5 class?
If you have a desire to complete the program and achieve Healing Touch Practitioner
(HTP) status, this course if for you.
Students who completed Levels 1-4 classes, and are in an active mentorship process as
a Healing Touch apprentice; and have completed assignments listed in the Level 4 course
materials may attend Level 5.
The time between Level 4 and 5 became a personal journey. I am different
now that i was at Level 4. Allow the personal journey to happen...I have
learned to release judgments of others and of myself because I have become more
heart-centered and I can now allow people to be who they really are."
“- Level 5 student
“
I felt overwhelmed at first with the homework to be done before level 5, but
as i got into the process and the work, I learned how to respect the process
and requirements. Everything we were given to do was profound. Trust in that."
Judy Turner and HTP
Judy Turner
and the Healing Touch Program
by Judy Turner, RN, BS, HNC, CHTP/I
A s I leave my administrative position
with Healing Touch Program, I reflect on
the 10 years of my employment, how I
first met Janet Mentgen, and how this has
shaped my life. My retirement is not really
a leaving but a shift in emphasis,
because I plan to teach more and include
some volunteer work. I will remain on the
HT Program Curriculum Committee along
with Anne Day, Myra Tovey and Cynthia
Hutchison. We will serve as the Wisdom
Keepers.
My initial interest in Healing Touch grew out of my desire
to be a Holistic Nurse and to “walk my talk” many years
ago. This led me to take Therapeutic Touch classes from
Janet Mentgen and her associates in 1986. I became
fascinated by what Janet could sense and perceive. I
traveled from Greeley to Denver often, just to take her
classes. I went to Shadowcliff at Grand Lake every year
to attend her retreats. I met wonderful friends from
around the country who then grew with me into becoming
Healing Touch Instructors. I think I wanted to
become an Instructor from my very first class. so that I
could inspire people the way Janet had inspired me and
so many others.
I moved to Denver in 1989 to pursue certification as a
Practitioner and Instructor because it was only offered
there at that time. Janet was constantly challenging me
with new horizons and new opportunities but she never
said “You should do this or that”. It was always presented
as a possibility. In an effort to repay her generosity
and kindness, I volunteered to help her with some of the
paperwork associated with her increasing teaching
schedule. This then grew into 4 to 6 of us who met weekly
at Janet’s house to stuff envelopes, fold fliers, stamp
mailings and assemble handouts. Within a few months
Janet said she felt she was now financially able to hire a
secretary and she chose Francina Ortiz, who had been
part of this weekly group.
As I was moving through my 10 weeks of Level 3A and
3B (now known as 4 and 5), Janet encouraged me to
take all the classes of Level 1, 2A (2) and 2B (3) again. I
got into the habit of attending every class that was
offered in the Denver area. My life was becoming totally
focused on Healing Touch. I enjoyed the excitement of
seeing people open to new ”Aha’s” and possibilities for
their lives. I learned something new every time myself.
Judy Turner and HTP
Janet invited me to go to the first Instructor Training (Level 4)
at Shadowcliff in Grand Lake in 1990 even though I was not
a certified practitioner as yet. She said it would be good for
me to meet everyone and begin to prepare to become an
instructor. It was a life changing event as many can attest to.
Some of my dearest friendships were started at that class. I
subsequently went to the next two Instructor Trainings at
Shadowcliff as I was preparing for my certifications as a
CHTP and CHTI.
My “day job” as she called it was as a Nursing Supervisor on
the evening shift at a nearby Psychiatric Hospital. I started at
a 32 hour a week position so I could develop my HT practice
and I cut back to 28 hours so I could manage the HT clinic
on Tuesday evenings. I suggested to Janet that we have it
every other Tuesday and she said “No, it must be every
week. Be consistent and people will count on it and come”
(Hmmmm, If you build it, they will come). My teaching
assignments started increasing and I was being challenged
to switch week-ends more frequently with my job share partner.
She was good about it but I began to feel guilty. In spring
of 1997, Janet asked if I was now willing to leave my “day
and Myra Tovey.
job” and join her staff full time. I said I’d like to do that and
what would my title be? She said “Program Director”. So
after we agreed on hours, salary and job responsibilities, I left
and told Francina, “I’m the new Program Director”. She said
“No Judy, you can’t be, that is Janet’s title!” So I went back
to Janet and we finally agreed on the title “Program
Coordinator”. I still laugh at that. Janet was so unconcerned
about image and titles.
Above: Judy Turner demostrating a Healing Touch technique to
students in Peru.
My teaching schedule increased and I was gone about twice
a month. Basically our office time was Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday. I was grateful that we had had the earlier years
to build the base of how to teach the program. It isn’t what I
know or what I say but how to teach it in a way that captures
the imagination of the student so that they want to learn
more and more. This I learned from Janet. I was fascinated
by how she did this and I wanted to emulate her. I loved
doing Healing Touch but teaching it so others came to love
doing it (and then maybe teach it as well), was a challenge, a
goal, a mission. Janet was my model, my mentor, my friend.
After several trips and vacations to Sanibel, Florida to visit
my high school sweetheart, Jack, I told Janet I thought I
wanted to move to Florida yet I would be sad to leave the job
I loved. She was very supportive, and said things like “These
are the best years of your life”, “You aren’t getting any
“Your job is mostly done on the phone and e-mails and you
can do that job from anywhere. Let’s set up a home office for
you in Florida”. We shortened my hours per week and we
pledged to talk to each other on a weekly basis.
When Janet’s health started failing in the summer of 2003, I
wasn’t sure what my role would be. Finally I decided to
spend the summer months in Denver, renting an apartment
from a friend. I feel privileged to have been with her a great
deal during her last months. We reminisced often, I read her
cards and letters out loud to her and we would recall when
we had been with that person. We both loved hearing from
our students all over the country and world. We both loved
the work. So when she made her transition, I wasn’t sure
what my “next mission” was to be. One never can go back.
Cynthia was ready and willing to take up the challenge of
being the Program Director so I offered to be her “assistant”
for awhile. However, the Administration of Healing Touch
Program felt that this was not an appropriate title and so we
thought about it until we came up with “Director of Program
Integrity”. Basically, will the decisions we make be in integrity
with the Intention of the program? I thought “Wow, can I
do this?” So Cynthia and I plowed ahead, taking on one project
after another until it was time to return to Florida last
Christmas. My future was calling. The time to shift had come.
My resignation was the culmination of 10 years of service to
this program and to Janet. Now it is time for me to enjoy the
rewards of this labor which for me is teaching…it is my greatest
joy. Also, I love to travel and Jack also loves traveling with
me so we look forward to each new invitation and communication
as an opportunity to meet new people, share in the
wisdom of Healing Touch and see new places.
With heartfelt thanks
A Note from Cynthia Hutchison, HT Program Director
I knew the day would come when Judy would announce to
me that it was time to have more fun and relaxation in her
life (being the joyful and funloving woman that she is), but
I kept hoping that time would be in the distant future long
I am grateful that she shared with you all, the readers of
Judy’s decision to resign before last Christmas was a
bittersweet moment for me. As her friend, I wanted her
colleague in administration in the HT Program, it was difficult
to give her my blessing to move on because of the
loving, constant and dedicated support she has shown
to me and to the stabalization and advancement of our
beloved program.
Judy always took on projects enthusiastically and with a
Healing Touch Empowering Lives in Peru
by Anne L. Day, RN, MA, HNC, CHTP/I
My travels to Peru December
1–3, 2006 to teach a Healing Touch Level
4 class was an incredible experience! It
was a time of personal expansion of consciousness,
as I experienced (along with
my husband Larry) how challenging it is to
live in a third world country. The extremes
of poverty were very difficult to witness.
However, amidst the communities of the
poor were very bright lights of the spiritual
strength of many, many people there.
Photo: Level 4 students and Instructors in Peru
In Lima I was honored to work with three very dedicated
Healing Touch Instructors who have taught HT to thousands
of people, and who were ready to be trained to
teach HT Level 4 classes. These women, from Catholic
Religious Communities around the world were Carol
Reamer, originally from Ohio, Eileen Kearney, from Ireland
and Emiliana González Sanllorente, from Spain. All have
been in Peru 13 – 20 years, working with the poor and the
disadvantaged. Margaret Kehoe and Nita Alvarado are
also in training to become HT instructors.
Since 2000, when Mary Jo Bulbrook and Sister Barbara
Cavanaugh brought the first Healing Touch class to Peru,
HT Empowering Lives
there have been 5,000 people from all over South America
who have taken HT classes. Thirty students have completed
Level 5. Emiliana is now assigned to an area in northern
Peru, where many of the women who come to HT classes
often have to canoe 6 hours! There is a strong interest in
Healing Touch and a willingness to come long distances
for a class. Other instructors who have contributed to
Spreading the Light of Healing Touch in Peru are: Carol
Kinney, Donna Duff, Judy Turner and Cynthia Hutchison.
On a tour of one of the poor communities there, we were
privileged to see a new children’s center that was just getting
ready to open. Amidst the shanties that shared walls
with this center, the beauty and energy that radiated from
this place was remarkable. Instead of the usual bars on the
windows, they had beautiful wrought iron angels, obviously
shifting the energy of the light from the challenging poor
environment outside…to a place of healing within.
Just before I arrived in Lima, a big article had been published
in a prominent Lima paper featuring the HT work
that Eileen and Margaret are doing in this poor community.
It was written by a journalist who is a friend of a man
with AIDS who had wonderful healing through the regular
HT treatments he is receiving at their therapy center. Their
phones were ringing off the hooks with interest in HT treatments
and classes! They just wrote to tell me that they are
now being featured in a TV report on Tele Mundi, a division
of NBC. So the HT publicity is really expanding in Peru!
At the Level 4 class, six students who had completed Level
5 came to share with the Level 4 class the last day. Their profile
books and homework were of very high quality. Again, the
stories of how HT has changed their lives brought me to
tears. As I watched the healing work of the students in the
class, I was assured that they are being taught well with very
high standards for learning pure Healing Touch.
We met beautiful women, who had either completed Level
5 or were in the process of taking classes, who gave HT
treatments to many people in their community. The stories
of how HT was changing their lives were amazing! For the
first time, many of them were becoming aware of a whole
new world as they read the books on the recommended
reading list. They were gaining new respect from their husbands
and children on how they were helping themselves,
their families and their community with HT.
I am totally committed to support these people and the great
work they are doing. I realize now in a way that I had not
comprehended before going to Peru, the importance of all of
us supporting their HT path all the way through certification.
The Sisters who have devoted their lives to helping the
Peruvians will not be there forever. We need the native peo-
Below: iron angels looking out at poverty.
As one of the women who had completed Level 5 this year
told us the story of her case study, I was very impressed by
the fine healing work that she was doing. Her case study
was a man dying of AIDS, who couldn’t walk and had sores
all over his face when he first started coming to her a year
ago. Within 3 months, he began to change dramatically. By
the end of one year, he was walking, had no sores on his
face and felt like he had a new life! The pride of this woman
and her instructors brought tears to my eyes! I believe that
the purity of spirit of these people brings the healing work to
a very profound level very quickly.
ple to become certified so that some of them can become
instructors and continue to “Spread the Light of Healing
Touch”.
We need the help of any CHTPs who can speak Spanish to
be mentors for the people who want to become certified in
Peru. It would involve monthly contacts by e-mail with the
instructors who are mentoring students there, and who will
give summary reports and pursue questions that need assistance
to answer.
I have volunteered to be the supervising nurse mentor to all
those who completed the Level 4 class with me in Lima.
They will work with their local mentors, who will then give me
regular reports through e-mail communication. I feel confident
that this will be a joyful and satisfying service. I ask all
A Rocket Scientist?
A Rocket Scientist
in Healing Touch?
By David Barnett
During introductions in each of my
Healing Touch classes, that is the standard
rhetorical question and it is usually
followed by laughter and raised eyebrows!
Combine that with being one of
the few guys in the class and it takes on
an even stranger quality. This always
leads into good-natured kidding from the
instructor about “not having to be a rocket
scientist to do Healing Touch.” There
actually are a number of advantages
coming from the physical science side
and doing this work. We’ll talk about
those further on.
My background includes bachelor’s degrees in electrical
engineering and psychology and master’s degrees in bioelectrical
sciences and computer science. Toss in a pilot’s
license, being a scuba divemaster, working in aerospace
for 27 years and seven patents in microspacecraft and you
start to get the feeling that I’ve touched a few areas. The
best part about this (besides obviously helping many universities’
budgets) is that somebody who tries to say
there’s nothing to energy medicine cannot easily dismiss
me because I can cite many theoretical and physical models
for how it may work.
I seriously started pursuing Healing Touch following a very
interesting chance meeting at my tenth high school
reunion. An old friend, whom I hadn’t seen for awhile,
approached me and talked about what he had been doing
since graduation. He asked if I had followed my plans to
become an engineer and I replied that I had. He started
talking around a subject including the possibility of changing
things remotely.
When I finally pinned him down, he said that he could
affect electronic devices at a distance. What a match for
me! We went to his house and he started demonstrating
what he could do: stalling another car in traffic, changing
traffic lights and hotel marquis signs, permanently lowering
the electric meter rate on a house, and changing the output
of the radio station where he worked. If we could think
of it, he could affect it. To put it lightly…I was stunned.
When I returned home to Denver, I became seriously
involved in reading, attending lectures and classes, going
to meditation sessions, and generally exploring metaphysical
concepts and phenomena. Along the way, I took the
sequence of Therapeutic Touch classes (early 1980s) and
started working with clients in a limited fashion.
This was fascinating work for me because I could perceive
the energy fields physically and the experiences were validated
with blind testing/evaluation on clients brought in by
continued on page 22
A Rocket Scientist?
the instructor. In one class, I “knew” as soon as I saw the
client that she had abdominal problems and during scanning,
it came to me that her colon was diseased. She was
suffering from diverticulitis. Wow! This stuff really works. I
couldn’t wait to try it on more people.
Now, think about this…a card-carrying
aerospace engineer in the 1980’s
was not a great candidate to hang
out an energy medicine shingle. So,
I kept it to family and friends. But the
story doesn’t end there.
In 2005, a lot of big spiritual things started firing up my life
(again, no such thing as a coincidence). I attended a Sonia
Choquette conference and was called on twice! I took the
training to be a Psych-K practitioner (a fast and effective
method for changing core beliefs in the subconscious).
My refresher also included taking Healing Touch Level 1 in
a holistic health program at a local college and then taking
Levels 2 - 4 in 2006. It was like getting to know an old
friend again and catching up on what had changed in the
intervening years.
Those intervening years were also filled with much more
reading and studying in the exotic world of quantum
mechanics and its implications in the metaphysical realm.
This provided the opportunity for much thoughtful exploration
into energy work.
What could comprise a “field” around a person? What
mechanisms exist for distance healing? What are my
views on what energy levels and vibrational frequencies
really imply?
Based on recommendations from the Level I class, I
read Hands of Light by Barbara Brennan and The Field
by Lynn McTaggart. These books, combined with my
previous reading, provided a great foundation for
speaking with those in the energy healing area and also
with those who were new to the concepts. (When talking
to hardcore engineers, I follow a different tack.)
For example, electrical engineers years ago began using
some very high-speed semiconductor devices that rely on
the “tunneling” effect. Tunneling comes from quantum
mechanics and is based on the concept that an object (in
this case, an electron) has a finite probability of suddenly
showing up in a different place.
In the electronics device, this effect is enhanced.
However, this also applies to an object of any mass. There
is actually a small probability that you, the reader, will suddenly
pop into my living room. Nothing prohibits this theoretically.
With this knowledge, it gets a little harder to categorically
deny energy medicine on the basis of not making
sense.
Going further, when physicists follow the particle hierarchy
downwards from molecules to atoms to protons and electrons,
things get very strange around electrons and then
especially the subatomic particles. You can’t “see” electrons
and smaller particles because a light wave hits them
like a Mac truck. Therefore, other experiments are created
to locate them and observe their interactions.
This behavior becomes very strange where particles blink
out and look like waves of energy and particles come and
go like fish leaping out of the sea. This really starts to get
at the heart of what we’re doing in Healing Touch when
working with energies that are very hard for us to define
and to see that these “waves” of energy extend without
limit in what we think of as a physical universe.
Regardless of how it works, I see a tremendous future for
alternative medicine and Healing Touch as the population
continues to get older, drug prices and drug interaction
problems continue to rise, and people become more
drawn to a very personal approach to healing.
I find Healing Touch a great way to support others and help
them progress through their health challenges. Is it a
placebo effect? I don’t care – the field of psychoneuroimcontinued
munology has provided clear indications of the stretch of
the human brain in tying into chemical and nervous reactions
throughout the body. Thinking does affect health.
People can choose the model that works in their belief
structure and we’ll continue helping clients when they
show up. As I write this, I have completed arrangements to
volunteer at a Denver psychiatric nursing home. I doubt if
the residents who receive Healing Touch will care about
the theory versus just having someone who is interested in
them. I will keep you updated on how a new volunteer project
progresses and the lessons learned. E
David’s Bio:
Dave is an honest-to-goodness rocket scientist and still
enjoys the surprise on people’s faces in Healing Touch
classes. He lives with his wife, Cindy, in Littleton, CO
where they enjoy being first-time grandparents. Dave has
been involved with alternative healing since the early
1980’s (Therapeutic Touch) and has worked in many
modalities. Most recently, Dave has become a Psych-K
practitioner and finds that this is very complementary to
Healing Touch. Dave recently completed Level 4 and is
working towards Level 5 and certification.
Dave works with clients in both the Denver and Ft. Collins
areas. He networks with several groups and is working on
developing a free clinic within a local psychiatric nursing
home. His expertise includes ongoing work in being a
medical intuitive and extensive experience in distance
healing using all modalities.
Dave continues with his work in aerospace consulting for
the US Air Force and his previous employer, Lockheed
Martin and he is also an adjunct professor in engineering
and computer science at a local university. His other interests
include creating bronze sculptures, wood turning and
Featured Healing Touch Instructor:
Jackie Mielke BS, CHTP/I, CAHI
This article is taken from Jackie’s responses to an
interview by the editor.
M y journey to Healing Touch began in
1984 when I became acquainted with a
charter member of AHNA during a hospice
volunteer training class. In 1987 she
invited me to be on a planning committee
to form a Minnesota chapter of AHNA. It
was to that group that the first instructors,
Ann Day and Judy Turner, came to teach
Healing Touch Level 1 in October, 1992.
Above: Jackie Mielke, BS, CHTP/I, CAHI
In addition, my HT journey has taken me to conferences in
Colorado and California; and to Las Vegas and North
Carolina for Level 2 and Level 3 instructor training.
As a student in that Level 1 workshop, I instantly knew that
I wanted to become certified in Healing Touch, both as a
practitioner and as an instructor.
I now teach Levels 1, 2, and 3 in a variety of settings - colleges,
medical centers, clinics, monasteries, hospitals -
predominantly in Minnesota. I have also taught in North
Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and have committed to teaching
in northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan.
My philosophy on healing is the hospice philosophy in that
healing relates to becoming whole and one may attain that
wholeness without being physically cured. Conversely, one
can be medically cured and still not be healed.
For me personally, healing is tackling the issues represented
in the spiritual, mental, emotional and vital/etheric layers
of the energy field. Healing is attitudinal, fearless, a
recognition of the spiritual essence of self as the core self.
Healing is also letting go of the old, the useless, the no
longer necessary and training ourselves to call our Spirit
back (Myss).
Finally, healing is Trusting the Universe and simultaneously
becoming a full partner in the healing process.
One of my most unique teaching experiences occurred in
1998, a year after becoming a Certified Healing Touch
Instructor. I was teaching Level 1 at a community college
in a rural area. The continuing education director had
gained special permission from HT for some of the students
to take the workshop for credit and some for CE
contact hours. Law Enforcement was the class taught during
the week in our workshop space. The walls were covered
with pictures of weapons and wanted criminals.
There were 5 helpers and every one of them was necessary
to help me hold the energy.

The class was evenly divided between college students
taking HT for credit and nurses attending for continuing
education. The class began on Friday evening and from
the beginning the two groups were at loggerheads--the
nurses would contribute something and the students
would roll their eyes; the kids would offer their view and the
nurses sighed and gave each other meaningful looks.
The helpers and I came early both Saturday and
Sunday mornings to clear and consecrate the space
again and remained vigilant throughout the day to keep
the energy grounded. By Sunday afternoon, I was looking
forward to 5pm and the end of this Level 1. That is
when a shift occurred.
The class was experiencing the Heart to Heart
Meditation--I was holding the energy, timing the exercise,
and wondering what I could have done differently to help
this class bond energetically. I glanced around the room
and discovered a miracle had happened! Every college
student was paired with a nurse! I had watched as they
chose their partners, but it didn't dawn on me, until this
moment…that this segmented class had finally merged
and the helpers and I had nothing to do with it. My "aha"
moment was realizing, with wonder and gratitude, that
Spirit/Guidance is as much involved in the teaching of
HT as in the practice of HT!

With regard to my own unique contributions…three come
to mind. I have been teaching adult education since
1979, I have worked in hospice since 1984, and, I am not
a nurse. I haven't always viewed the latter as an advantage!
A growing awareness that some students were
drawn to workshops BECAUSE of my background taught
me that I have unique contributions to offer the Healing
Touch Program as instructor and mentor.
My advice to a new instructor is to maintain a thriving practice
with as many different patient populations as possible!
These rich experiences produce valuable teaching examples
for each of the techniques.
When someone is thinking of taking a HT class I key in to
their reason for considering Healing Touch and speak specifically
to that. Is it for self care? Are they caring for a friend or
relative? Are they considering a job change? Do they want to
augment their value to their present employer? What is their
interest in complementary therapies? Is it to restore or implement
a healing ministry in a church setting? Are they searching
for a different career?
In my experience, prospective students usually have specific
questions about whether HT will fill their particular needs.
My vision with regard to the future of Healing Touch is the
same as I tell practitioners when they ask what I think about
them becoming instructors. (They express concern that the
field will be too crowded or that they could not support themselves.)
Until we are teaching regular classes in every hospital,
clinic, medical center, college, university, long term care
facility and church in the state, (nation/world) the instructor
field is not saturated. Also, until we are providing Healing
Touch in every medical facility, we need to hold that vision. E
Money As Energy
AS
by Marilee Tolen, RN, HNC, CHTP/I
Vibrate What You Want
We can vibrate anything we want
into our lives, including money.
Healing Touch practitioners should be
able to grasp this concept more than
most people. All energetic principles are
the same no matter what the intention. In
Healing Touch, since we are nursing
based, we are accustomed to working
with the intention of balancing the energy
field for good health on all levels – body,
mind, and spirit. But we can use our
knowledge, skills, and the energetic principles
we work with, and apply it to anything,
including money.
The Trick to Money is Having Some
When I was writing my thesis on the energy of money in
1995-96, I referenced a book by Stuart Wilde that was
entitled “The Trick to Money is Having Some”. At first this
made no sense to me. It wasn’t until I applied energetic
principles and Universal Laws to this concept that I was
able to understand and apply how this works.
Like Attracts Like
The Law of Attraction tells us that “like attracts like”. So,
as it applies to money, the more money we have – the
more we get. Haven’t you heard the saying “the rich get
richer and the poor get poorer”? This speaks to the Law of
Attraction.
What if we don’t have much money to begin with? – then
based on this principle - how can we create money? We
can create money with the decision to hold in our mind
good positive abundant thoughts that say we are grateful
for the money we have. Bring in the emotional body here
to ‘feel good’ about what we do have. The ‘feel good’ will
vibrate in more of the same.
Our thoughts are what magnetize our energy field. We can
decide to either think positive or negative thoughts. The
easy way to do this is to first begin to witness what the
thoughts are and if they are negative, then make a conscious
effort to change them to positive.
Affirmations are powerful. Many times people complain
that they can’t affirm for something that they feel is impossible
for them to have. It’s important to remember that the
subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between
Money As Energy
real or imagined circumstances – so we can take advantage
of that and use our imaginations to trick our subconscious.
This is something you can have fun with!
Charge Your Energy Field with Your Dreams
Dream all the dreams you want! Dreaming and letting your
imagination soar can charge your field with the vibration of
things that you want to attract. And more of that begets
more.
Thanks to the popularity of the recent movie “The Secret”,
which is based on the Law of Attraction, many minds are
shifting to the awareness of the possibility that we can create
what we want in our lives. The more people who know
about this and share it with others the better because this
will help create a critical mass that can elevate all of our
consciousnesses and help us all become closer to our cocreative
selves. E
