Featured HT Instructor Featured Healing Touch Instructor: Jackie Mielke BS, CHTP/I, CAHI This article is taken from Jackie’s responses to an interview by the editor. M y journey to Healing Touch began in 1984 when I became acquainted with a charter member of AHNA during a hospice volunteer training class. In 1987 she invited me to be on a planning committee to form a Minnesota chapter of AHNA. It was to that group that the first instructors, Ann Day and Judy Turner, came to teach Healing Touch Level 1 in October, 1992. Above: Jackie Mielke, BS, CHTP/I, CAHI In addition, my HT journey has taken me to conferences in Colorado and California; and to Las Vegas and North Carolina for Level 2 and Level 3 instructor training. As a student in that Level 1 workshop, I instantly knew that I wanted to become certified in Healing Touch, both as a practitioner and as an instructor. I now teach Levels 1, 2, and 3 in a variety of settings - colleges, medical centers, clinics, monasteries, hospitals - predominantly in Minnesota. I have also taught in North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and have committed to teaching in northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. My philosophy on healing is the hospice philosophy in that healing relates to becoming whole and one may attain that wholeness without being physically cured. Conversely, one can be medically cured and still not be healed. For me personally, healing is tackling the issues represented in the spiritual, mental, emotional and vital/etheric layers of the energy field. Healing is attitudinal, fearless, a recognition of the spiritual essence of self as the core self. continued on page 25 TM February 2007 Energy Magazine 24
Featured HT Instructor Healing is also letting go of the old, the useless, the no longer necessary and training ourselves to call our Spirit back (Myss). Finally, healing is Trusting the Universe and simultaneously becoming a full partner in the healing process. One of my most unique teaching experiences occurred in 1998, a year after becoming a Certified Healing Touch Instructor. I was teaching Level 1 at a community college in a rural area. The continuing education director had gained special permission from HT for some of the students to take the workshop for credit and some for CE contact hours. Law Enforcement was the class taught during the week in our workshop space. The walls were covered with pictures of weapons and wanted criminals. There were 5 helpers and every one of them was necessary to help me hold the energy. The class was evenly divided between college students taking HT for credit and nurses attending for continuing education. The class began on Friday evening and from the beginning the two groups were at loggerheads--the nurses would contribute something and the students would roll their eyes; the kids would offer their view and the nurses sighed and gave each other meaningful looks. The helpers and I came early both Saturday and Sunday mornings to clear and consecrate the space again and remained vigilant throughout the day to keep the energy grounded. By Sunday afternoon, I was looking forward to 5pm and the end of this Level 1. That is when a shift occurred. The class was experiencing the Heart to Heart Meditation--I was holding the energy, timing the exercise, and wondering what I could have done differently to help this class bond energetically. I glanced around the room and discovered a miracle had happened! Every college student was paired with a nurse! I had watched as they chose their partners, but it didn't dawn on me, until this moment…that this segmented class had finally merged and the helpers and I had nothing to do with it. My "aha" moment was realizing, with wonder and gratitude, that Spirit/Guidance is as much involved in the teaching of HT as in the practice of HT! With regard to my own unique contributions…three come to mind. I have been teaching adult education since 1979, I have worked in hospice since 1984, and, I am not a nurse. I haven't always viewed the latter as an advantage! A growing awareness that some students were drawn to workshops BECAUSE of my background taught me that I have unique contributions to offer the Healing Touch Program as instructor and mentor. My advice to a new instructor is to maintain a thriving practice with as many different patient populations as possible! continued on page 26 TM February 2007 Energy Magazine 25
