marine-based service to our clients. From our head office in Mombasa and our office in Nairobi, we offer
port agency, liner agency, offshore services, P&I representation, cargo logistics and government services.

9 ISS Kenya is the leading provider of agency services
in the region. We were one of the first companies
locally to be ISO certified, in 1998.
9 We have a strong presence through our head office
in Mombasa and our inland office in the capital,
Nairobi. We also operate a state-of-the-art
container depot, Dodwell Container Terminal,
3 kms from Mombasa Port. Opened two years
ago, the depot offers clients a range of storage and
logistics services.
9 Mombasa is the largest and busiest international
seaport on the East African coast. Its strategic
location make it a major port of call for most
international shipping lines and its hinterland
includes Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi,
Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan,
Northern Tanzania, Somalia and Ethiopia.
9 At Mombasa, we provide agency services for all
types of vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers,
container ships, passenger vessels, reefer vessels
and ro-ro ships. We are experienced in handling all
types of cargoes, including petroleum products, bulk
cargoes and vehicles.
9 ISS Kenya is the leading cruise ship agent in Kenya.
We were responsible for negotiating tariff reductions
with the Kenya Ports Authority in 2008 and also
negotiated for a special waiver of all light dues for
cruise ships. This has helped Mombasa to develop
its presence in the cruise ship sector, by making it
more competitive.
9 We have invested heavily in specialist equipment
over the past two years to assist both warships and
cruise vessels. This includes Yokohama fenders,
ship’s brows, security drop arms and specialist
lighting for vessels whilst alongside.
9 ISS is the largest P&I correspondent in Kenya,
representing six of the major International Group
P&I clubs.
9 ISS Kenya is a strong supporter of local charities,
including Scholarships for Kids and the Amurt
Children’s Home. Not only do we donate funds to
them, we have taken disadvantaged young people
from both organisations on to our staff, offering them
training, clothing, accommodation and the

FAQ Kenya
9 What are the Port of Mombasa’s working
hours? Are there any restrictions on pilotage?
The port operates 24 hours, seven days a week,
with the exception of 25 December and 1 May. Night
pilotage is not allowed for petroleum tankers and
vessels exceeding 200 metres loa.
9 How can ISS Kenya smooth the port process for clients?
ISS staff understand the local market, rules and regulations in Kenya and enjoy excellent relations with the
port authorities and other government departments. Through this good rapport and our one-stop-shop
offering, we can ensure trouble-free operations for vessels in a part of the world where complicated rules and
lengthy procedures often prevail.
9 What are the security arrangements like at Mombasa?
The port is fully ISPS-compliant. ISS Kenya has become the leading agent for discussing and setting up
innovative security measures for warships and cruise vessels whilst alongside in Mombasa. This includes
special arrangements with the port authority, such as pre-berthing inspection by divers and 24-hour coastal
patrol boats to offer additional protection for vessels.
9 What services are offered by ISS at Mombasa?
We arrange all berthing formalities for port calls, along with related cargo and customs documentation.
We are in close contact with local terminals in order to have information well in advance. We ensure a quick
and efficient turnaround of vessels. ISS Kenya will arrange crew logistics and Cash to Master, and coordinate
bunkers and provisions, dry docking and repairs.
9 What services are offered at the ISS-operated container depot?
The Dodwell Container Terminal, near Mombasa Port, is operated by Dodwell and Co. East Africa Ltd, a member
of the ISS Group. Initially the depot will be used for storage, repair and empties repositioning. The 6-acre yard
is fully paved, with capacity for 3,400 teu stacked five -high. Another 2.67 acres is available for expansion.
Our container depot team is well trained in logistics management, operations and container repairs and
maintenance. Our very high-quality container repair facility – the only one in Mombasa – is fully equipped with
the latest welding machines, hydraulic body jacks and welding tools. Shipping lines can take advantage of
competitive costs by choosing to carry out container repairs in Mombasa.
9 What services are offered by ISS in Nairobi?
Our cargo services division, Dodwell & Co., offers LCL consolidation services from India, Dubai and the UAE
to Kenya and Uganda on a weekly basis. We also offer airfreight services from all over the world, cargo
clearance from the port up to client’s premises, and exports clearance. ISS Nairobi has an arrangement with
Rift Valley Railways for containers to be railed from Mombasa to Nairobi for ease of clearance.
9 Are surveyors available?
ISS Kenya has two full-time surveyors who can carry out a full range of cargo, container, on-hire, off-hire,
draught and bunker surveys.
9 How long does it take to clear goods/spares at Mombasa? What documentation is required?
Goods arriving via the seaport require five working days for clearance, while air freight takes two working
days. Local imports must have an Import Declaration Form (IDF), original suppliers’ invoice, two original bills
of lading and copies of the log books for vehicles. Transit cargo must have copies of the IDF and one original
bill of lading. Ship’s spares require and invoice, packing list and airway bill or bill of lading.
