Weekly Professional Learning
Community Time for Teachers
Each Wednesday from 12:35 - 1:35 p.m., the
HES faculty is committed to participate in the
school-wide Professional Learning Community
(PLC) Time. PLC Time is
scheduled to provide the
teachers time to work on
standards-based instruction.
Parents are not to schedule
any meetings with their
children's teachers on
Wednesday afternoons. PLC
Time is an essential component of our
school's commitment to continuous
improvement. PLC Time cannot be
compromised for the sake of our students.
2007 Freedom Tower Lighting
Hickam Air Force Base advised that the
annual Freedom Tower Lighting Ceremony will
be held on Friday, November 30th.
The Freedom Tower parking lot will be closed
for a period of time during the month of
November to enable the electrical crew to
install the strings of holiday lights onto the
tower. During this time the HES faculty, staff
and parents are to park on the right side of 8th
Street and 9th Street. The student DROP
OFF/PICK UP will continue to be made on
Manzelman Circle by the designated five (5)
traffic cones which will allow 5 vehicles to
unload/load student passengers. In addition,
the bus area will not be affected by this event.
NOTE: While the Freedom Tower parking lot
is closed, the Special Education bus will
unload/load student passengers in the
LOADING ZONE FOR COMMERCIAL
VEHICLES on Manzelman Circle. Thank you
in advance for your patience and
understanding. Happy Holidays!
Wellness Guidelines
The Department of Education (DOE)
recognizes that there are links among nutrition
education, the food served in schools, and the
amount of physical activity. Student wellness
is affected by all of these. The DOE also
recognizes that when students’ wellness
needs are met, they attain higher achievement
levels.
Please help by having your children make
healthy snack choices, by bringing to school
foods such as:
Fruits
Veggie sticks
Trail mix
Baked tortilla chips
Applesauce, fruit cups
Pretzels
Yogurt
Low-fat popcorn
100% fruit juice instead of soda
Test Your Nutrition I.Q.
All good intentions aside, you know how easy it is to miss a meal, grab a fast-food lunch, or down a big
portion. How much thought do you put into eating well?
1. Do you eat breakfast every day? Yes No
2. Do you eat three meals a day? Yes No
3. Do you think about serving sizes? Yes No
4. Do you eat late at night? Yes No
ANSWERS:
1. Breakfast provides energy and aids thinking. People who eat breakfast also tend to eat healthier
foods -- with less fat and more minerals and vitamins -- throughout the day. Choose fruits, whole
grains and low fat dairy products to start your day well.
2. Eating three meals a day is a healthy approach, but people who eat four or five small meals
throughout the day, instead of a lower number of large meals, may stay slimmer and more energized
by better managing their appetites.
3. Knowing standard serving sizes helps you judge how much you are eating. For example: A
standard serving of cheese is the size of four dice. Severe dieting -- eating fewer than 800 calories
per day -- can cause potentially fatal heart-rhythm problems.
4. It is a myth that eating after 8 p.m. will make you fat. Your weight is determined by your total caloric
intake and physical activity for the day -- no matter what time you eat. Losing too much weight
(more than 3 pounds a week) can raise your risk of gallstones. If you are trying to shed some
pounds, aim for a healthy weight loss of 1/2 to 2 pounds a week.
PCNC News
I would like to thank all who participated in
the PCNC sponsored Original Works Art
Fundraiser. Art Night was a big
hit and everyone had a great
time. Students and parents
had fun learning how to
make watercolor flowers and
Craypas (oil pastels) tropical scenes. A
special thanks to the guest artists Ms. Ann
Uyehara and Ms. Tracie Higashi for all their
hard work and preparation time especially
during parent-teacher conferences. I also
appreciate all the teachers who completed
art projects in their classroom for this special
art fundraiser. The fundraiser was very
successful, thanks to all our wonderful
parents, and the money raised will be used
for upcoming JPO events, chorus
productions and the PCNC volunteer
appreciation breakfast.
On November 9th, the Hickam PTO will be
sponsoring the Annual Fall Festival and the
PCNC will have the Yearbook Buddy Photos
again. The cost will be a $1.00 a person and
the funds raised will help lower the cost of
the full-colored yearbook. Don’t miss out on
the fun!
you can use to change the world” (Nelson
CDC Parking Lot: Off-Limits
In recent weeks the Child Development Center parents are
unable to find any parking in the CDC parking lot during
the morning drop-off time. In an effort to be "good
neighbors", Hickam Elementary parents are to park their
vehicles on the right side of 8th Street and 9th Street.
CDC parking lot is off-limits to the HES parents.
Hickam School has been participating in
Radford Complex volleyball activities for the
past 11 years. This year's team did well,
finishing with a 4-3 record.
HES went 3-2 at the complex tournament.
Things began well w/a 30-17 win over
Makalapa. The Falcons were behind 6-15,
but Dillon Courtwright served out the game
to make the final score 30-17. A taller, more
athletic Mokulele beat HES 19-30, but
Hickam recovered with a 30-16 defeat of
Pearl Harbor. HES then beat PHK for the
first time in 3 years 30-23, but fell to
Aliamanu 30-18 in game 5. Aliamanu was
the only team to successfully utilize all three
hits per possession.
Hickam then finished with a 2 game set at
Mokulele on October 15. No score was kept,
but the teams split games - whichever team
had the blustery breezes at its back won.
