EXPLORATIONS<strong>The</strong> <strong>Hickam</strong> Gifted and Talented program is now accepting applications forsecond semester. 1 st graders must read through level 10 on the Open CourtReading Test with no more than a total of 5 decoding/comprehension errors.Students in grades 2- 6 who wish to to be considered for GT testing must earn atleast 90% on the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Assessment. Interested parents shouldsee their child's classroom teacher for an application.<strong>The</strong> criteria for acceptance into the Explorations Program includes the following:· Currently a student in grades 1-6 (Kindergarteners will be tested at the endof third quarter, and will start GT services in the 4 th qtr.)! Cognitive Abilities Test: 90 th percentile and above! Mathematics Achievement Test (Hawaii State Assessment or othernationally-normed test: 90%percentile and above)! Grade Point Average (GPA): 3.5 and above or Meets Proficiency in allcore subject areas! A Creative Writing Sample (to be reviewed by a core committee)! Teacher Referral / Parent Nomination<strong>The</strong> Gifted and Talented Explorations Program provides opportunities forstudents to develop higher levels of cognitive thinking, analyzing, synthesizing, and theevaluation of information. Students will be given opportunities to apply scientific andmathematical strategies, skills, and concepts in problem-solving situations. <strong>The</strong> inquirybasedformat of the program enables students to construct their own understandings inscience and math by participating in investigations that are meaningful to them.Throughout the investigations, the students are asked to make predictions, formjudgments, justify their reasoning, and draw conclusions based on their findings.Although the primary focus of the G.T. program is Science, other subject areassuch as Math, Language Arts and Technology are also heavily integrated into thecurriculum. Because the program is designed to supplement the core content beingtaught in the regular classroom, the Explorations Program teacher will not be providingyour child’s quarterly grade. However, all students will be evaluated in the followingareas: content mastery, attitude, task commitment, and creativity according to theHawaii Content and Performance Standards. Students who are accepted into theExplorations Program must be able to maintain a "Meets proficiency" average in theircore subject areas, and are required to make up any work that they miss from theirhomeroom classes.
