Don Pepe decided to take Julia <strong>and</strong> her family somewhere else<br />
because he wanted to hide from the village what he had done. He<br />
was known to be a very religious man <strong>and</strong> was respected by many<br />
because he was a big l<strong>and</strong>owner. He discussed the matter with Julia’s<br />
parents.<br />
Carmen remembered she had a niece living in Pasay, about three<br />
kilometers from Manila. She paid her niece a visit <strong>and</strong> told her about<br />
Julia <strong>and</strong> the l<strong>and</strong>lord. Carmen found a house for rent only a block<br />
from where her niece lived.<br />
The l<strong>and</strong>lord gave Carmen <strong>and</strong> Alberto money to move their<br />
entire family to Pasay. They went on board a train, Alberto <strong>and</strong> Carmen<br />
<strong>and</strong> their children, Julia among them. At that time, Carmen<br />
had just given birth to her tenth child. In the seven years that had<br />
passed since Julia fi rst went to work for the l<strong>and</strong>lord, Carmen had<br />
three more children.
