What’s better than HD security visuals?
4K, same as in the movies, says Sony
At ISC West taking place April
14-17 in Las Vegas, where security
product users, integrators
and producers gathered, Sony
revealed its new 4K camera,
a technology that is sweeping
across many sectors of its imaging
business and raising the ante
for visual quality in the security
industry.
The new SNC-
VM772R camera, a minidome
designed for outdoor
use, captures four times the
content of the HD 1080p
standard. It has both automatic
features, such as
adjusting to lighting situations,
and user-determined
flexibility that allows them
to set up to four selected
prime areas of interest for
the image capture plus an overview
image. The multi-talented
camera grabs images in such
details that enlarging small
portions of the scene, like faces,
license plates and signage, can be
zoomed in while retaining visual
clarity.
This visual advantage also
pays off in having one camera
cover a larger-than-typical area,
both longer-range distance and a
wider scene.
GSN had the opportunity
to speak with Matt Soga, senior
vice president, Sony’s Professional
Solutions Americas, and
Kenichi Mori, Sony’s director of
Security Solutions Marketing,
and about the 4K camera technology.
“4K imaging delivers more
than just extra resolution,” said
Soga. “It expands the potential
applications for security cameras.
With 4K resolution, you can
cover a larger area and achieve
equal or better details compared
to HD. This improves situational
awareness and helps security
professionals reduce installation
and operating costs because
fewer cameras are needed for
specific areas.”
But the legacy disadvantage
of such quality resolution
can be a costly bandwidth and
storage issue—which Sony has
addressed through technology
that allows the
camera user to select
up to four more-critical
areas in the camera view.
By compressing details
in less-critical areas of
the frame and making
the most of 4K capacity
where it counts, the company
estimates users will
save, on average, up to 50
percent of bandwidth use
and storage. Ultimately, this feature
allows users to reduce their
bandwidth, crop images and
activate video motion detectionbased
tracking.
Another customer adjustment
allows clients to use an
