Axis introduces new launches—and new ownership
In a press breakfast at the 2015
ISC West Show in Las Vegas,
Axis Communications Inc., long
a powerhouse in product development
for the security industry,
discussed its latest launches --
and teased attendees with information
about the company’s
change in ownership.
Martin Gren, co-founder of
Axis, and Fredrik Nilsson, general
manager for North America,
shared demos of products related
to video surveillance and
physical access control at a press
briefing during the April security
industry event in Las Vegas.
4K multi-sensor
180-degree dome camera
For openers (the briefing
had a baseball theme), the typically
affable Gren slipped into
unbridled passion. Armed with
a baseball bat, he whacked the
company’s latest wide-eyed security
camera, Q3709-PVE. More
than five heart-felt swats later,
the camera flopped from table to
floor but remained intact—highlighting
its durability.
After Gren bashed away,
Nilsson calmly shared how the
camera surpassed standards—
three baseball-bat style beatings
in an unspecified area of the
product—and how Axis conducts
30 impact tests, strictly
hitting the perceived weakest
structures. When Gren indulged
in his adrenalin-driven release,
the point was made physically
and verbally that the housing
and technology could withstand
a vandal’s swing, that dust and
water were not worthy opponents,
and that even after this
trauma, the self-contained,
factory-focused camera did not
require refocusing.
The camera is capable
of180 degrees of coverage (indoors
or out) because of three
24
4K sensors—providing a functionality
and stitch-free image
(up to 33 MP) suitable for airports,
rail stations and stadiums,
according to the company.
With such a reliable, IP
partner, Nilsson pointed out that
security businesses could realize
both quality images and cost
savings, replacing multiple analog
cameras with the wide-view
of this one IP camera, and cutting
the costs of security workforces.
While overall, humans
and technology work together,
Nilsson called for cameras and
other devices “to do what they
do better than humans”—in this
case, see and remember. “Instead
of guards making the rounds,
you don’t have to rely on people
if events are occurring,” he said.
The camera, supported by
many VMSs, will be available in
the second quarter, retailing at
$2,399.
Another featured Axis product
was Zipstream technology,
which targets reducing
video surveillance storage—and
