Pote’s Notes....
Hello Nobles,
I am happy to report that the 2013 Imperial Session in Indianapolis
was very successful. Your elected representatives voted following much
deliberation on the many items raised for both the fraternal and hospital side of
our organization. There was serious legislation to consider, the most significant of
which had to deal with the situation in Arkansas between its Grand Lodge and its
two Shrine centers. You will find a message on page 9 of this magazine from (now
Past) Imp. Sir Alan Madsen, which he issued following the vote regarding Arkansas
Shriners. Please take the time to read it so you are informed of this unfortunate
necessity. If you have any questions, please let me know. The delegates also
approved allowing non-Shriners to fill out the ranks of our performing groups,
such as bands. This helps our performers create a full unit, as well as exposing
non-Shriners to the fun side of Shrinedom. I’ve seen it happen that we get
members from these performers or their relatives. Imperial Sir Nick Thomas
discussed the legislation at the July 20th Al Malaikah Stated Meeting.
Your Al Malaikah Elected Representatives and other Nobles and their ladies
also had a great time at this year’s Imperial Session. It is always good to be
with brother Nobles and especially when we can take over a downtown area for
several days. We were able to visit many sights, several of which were within
walking distance of the hotel. The downtown area is now interconnected with air conditioned covered walkways,
so whether it was wet, humid or windy out, there was a more comfortable path for those who chose the easier
way to get around. We were also pleased to host at a group dinner at the Hollyhock Hill Restaurant Gene and
Zelma Lackey, our close friends from Indianapolis who have opened their home for a huge BBQ during our
annual pilgrimages to the Indy 500 since 1982, and to John Deck, who helps out at that BBQ.
Our new Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir John Cinotto, and the Imperial Divan, are emphasizing
membership and strengthening Temples during the 2013-2014 Shrine Year. They feel that now that we have spent
the past few years focusing on the hospitals, now is the time to shift attention to securing the Fraternity’s future.
For Imperial’s side, they will make themselves more visible and accessible to the Temples. Their goal is to visit
at least 50 Temples to provide support. On the Temple side, Imperial Sir Cinotto asks that we crate as many new
Shriners as possible through the end of 2013 and reduce our non-paid dues members. There are guidelines and
suggestions provided on www.shrinersvillage.com and more information for non-Shriners and non-Masons on
www.shrinersvillage.com.
We have two exciting Ceremonials coming up. On August 17th at the Shrine Auditorium and on October
26th in Lake Havasu City (as part of our away trip to Havasu October 24-27). Now is the time to talk to your
Brother Masons and, if they are interested in the Shrine, bring them by the Candidates pre-Ceremonial orientation
on August 10th so they can confirm that now is the time to join the Shrine. Great things are possible as long as
we maintain our membership levels. But we can’t do it without all of us commiting to the membership program.
Ask our Membership Committee leaders, Nobles Seb Badoyan or Guy Richmond (1st Ceremonial Master), or
any Divan member if you are interested in having us present a membership seminar at your Club. There may also
be opportunities to join in a membership webcast with Imperial. More on this to come.
Take advantage of the activities advertised in this magazine and on our website. Communicate your Club
or Unit activities throughout the Temple membership using this magazine, email blasts or our Facebook site. But
mainly, have fun with whatever you do. Have a great summer.

A Note from the Second Ceremonial Master
Hello All,
While I was working in Hawaii (yes working) I made it a point to visit the
Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu.
The Noble on the left is Bruce Holmberg, Chairman of the Board for
the Hospital, and the Noble on the right is Jim David, Vice President of Sales
and a fellow Brother from King Food Service who sells our products.
Bruce took me on a tour of the hospital and I can’t tell you the warm
welcome I received from everyone there, doctors, nurses, and staff.

Do you attend your Blue Lodge regularly (or would you like to)? Would you like to stand up in your Blue Lodge and
make Shrine Announcements and presentations? Then you are exactly who we are looking for!!
The Shrine Lodge Ambassador Program is intended to create a communication
stream between Al Malaikah Shrine and the Masonic Lodges in our jurisdiction.
The Shrine Ambassador receives a name badge indicating his ambassadorship to
be worn at Lodge, Shrine meetings, and events. An email
will be sent to the Ambassadors the last week of each month
listing Al Malaikah Shrine events for the coming month,
sort of like “talking points”, to be mentioned at your Lodge
Stated Meeting. You will be able to present the Potentate’s
congratulatory certificate and package to newly raised Master
Masons.

Best of Denmark Comes to Glendora
Mystic Shrine Club will hold its annual Æbleskiver breakfast on
Saturday, August 24, from 8:00am to 11:00 am

For a donation of $10.00 you will receive the ever popular Danish pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice,
coffee, champagne and condiments. Everyone is welcome!
Thank heavens you don’t have to pronounce it to eat it. What is it? This is
probably the most asked question. Best described as round pancake balls,
Æbleskiver are a fun alternative to the traditional pancake breakfast.
Served with raspberry jam and powdered sugar (the traditional way) or
create your own version, using butter and syrup, topped fruit. Yummy!
Where does Aebleskiver come from? Well here is the one legend straight
from the mother of the Publisher’s former girlfriend! (That was 28 years ago
and another story) I was told this tale when in Denmark a dozen years ago while
competing and representing Al Malaikah at the World Long DistanceTriathlon
Championships. I don’t know if it’s true but Mrs. Sorenson would never lie to me
would she?
She told Lady Kathryn and I that back in the good
old days, when the Vikings were roaming up and down the coasts of Europe and the waters of the
Atlantic, one band of these Vikings had been particularly hard hit in battle. So, when they got back
on their ship with their horn helmets and shields all dented and banged up, they decided to have one
of their favorite dishes to help them regain their strength. This meal was pancakes!
In those days they did not have modern conveniences such as frying pans, so, they
greased their shields and poured the pancake batter on them right over the fire but, guess what?!
Aebleskiver!
All I know is that Aebleskiver helps power the Danish triathlon team too.
If you can’t to travel to Denmark to enjoy Aebleskiver, you can do the next best thing by coming out and enjoying the
company of your fellow Shriners and enjoy Aebleskiver in Glendora.

Arkansas Statement
Imperial representatives of Shriners International voted to make a change to its articles of incorporation regarding
membership at the 139th Imperial Session. The prerequisite requiring that members of Shriners International are first
members of Freemasonry (Masons) in good standing has been amended to exclude the requirement for the state of
Arkansas.
This legislation was brought forth by the two Shrine temples in Arkansas following the Arkansas Grand Lodge
edict last November that would no longer allow anyone to remain an Arkansas Mason AND an Arkansas Shriner. Shriners
International has always had a Masonic prerequisite and regrets that the actions of the Arkansas Grand Lodge made the
passage of this legislation necessary to preserve the existence of the two Shrine temples in Arkansas.
Shriners International is committed to maintaining open lines of communication with the Grand Lodge of
Arkansas to encourage amicable relationships for current and future Masons and Shriners. This change
does not affect other Shriners across the country, and the organization remains a fraternity based on fun, fellowship
and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. Shriners International’s primary focus continues to be its
philanthropic mission to support Shriners Hospitals for Children, a world-renowned health care system with 22 facilities
in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A Letter of Thanks
Dear Dr. Song,
I left my office today like most days, not knowing completely what awaited me at
the airport. Unsure of the result we would be able to provide this child, if we are even able
to help him medically at all. However, there was never a doubt in my mind and in my heart
that each patient would be healed… spiritually.
The sacred relationships I build with each patient remains etched within my soul
for as long as I live, as with each patient that I embrace takes a piece of me with them
when they return back to their home. There is no higher honor, no sense of gratification
that can surpass the sheer elation and hallowed feelings I enjoy more than when I see their
smiling faces, knowing they are smiling because of men like you only adds that secret
ingredient that makes that much sweeter.
I cannot thank you enough, your staff, all the doctors, volunteers, fellow Shriners
and the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles as a whole for all that you do for
children around the world. Mere words would not encompass the feeling of gratitude,
honor and humility I sense when I am bestowed with the most prestigious honor of
Ambassador at Large for Al Malaikah Shrine Center.
I sensed an incumbent duty to share these jubilant feelings with you, since these
emotions are directly derived from your steadfast compassion towards mankind and an
unyielding dedication to your craft. Again, because of angels like you, instruments of God,
I am able to experience the joy of altering a child’s life, watching as the adolescent hope
each child clings to evolve into an absolute and mature faith.
Again, on behalf of all children around the world, my patients and I, thank you,
your staff, all Shriner Doctors, volunteers, my fellow Noble Shriners and the Shriners
Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles from the bottom of my heart, you remain the
lighthouse which shines hope in darkness.

Sahara Patrol’s Hooka Night
The Sahara Patrol had a great Hookah Night June 15th on the roof of the Shrine
Auditorium parking lot. As you can see from the photos there was plenty of
fun, food, and fellowship.
A variety of hookahs and tobacco were provided by Gabriel Khanlian
Exotic Imports USA LLC. He even shared with us his newest product, bamboo
charcoal with us. It gives the smoke a sweeter taste and seems to burn much
longer.
We enjoyed a lovely evening watching the sun go down and the lights come up
on downtown LA. Again this year we had a huge feast of Mediterranean food, and plenty
of drinks. We even had a huge cake shaped like a Patrolman.
Make plans to join us next year for Hookah Night.
Whether you enjoy a toke or not, the
food and friendship is worth the time.

Antelope Valley to Host All-Masonic Picnic
The Antelope Valley Shrine Club is hosting an “ All-Masonic Picnic” on Sunday September 22nd starting
at 11am thru 2pm. All Masonic organizations are invited to attend. The cost is only $5.00 per person with
Masonic Youth members free. Location: The Fin and Feather Club, 600 E. Ave S, Palmdale, Ca. The park is
located about ½ mile east of the Antelope Valley Freeway ( Hwy 14). Hamburgers and Hot Dogs with all the
trimmings with be served. The Masonic Lodges of Palmdale, Lancaster and Gen. W. H. Arnold of Rosamond
will furnish side dishes and salads. Please join the day and great fellowship.
Notice of a Lost Shrine Pin
We received a message from Lynda Koenders, who runs the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm in Victoria, British
Columbia, Canada. She writes, “I have a found pin that says Al Malaikah 1975 on the back. It is at the
Beacon Hill Childrens Farm. How do I go about finding the right owner?” Thank you. Lynda Koenders.
While this pin could have come from an Al Malaikah Shriner, it could also have fallen from another
Shriner who traded pins with us. In either case, we were so touched at Ms. Koenders’ concern, that we are
running the notice in the Al Malaikahan. If you visited the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm in Victoria and lost
such a pin, please contact the office and we will contact Ms. Koenders. If you happen to be in Victoria, stop
by the Farm. It looks very entertaining.

The 100 Million Dollar Club
The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided
lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than
800,000 children — without cost to them or their families.
The money to provide these needed services at 22
hospitals comes from many sources: community donations;
fundraising events; investment income; and support from the
Shriners of North America.
As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals
needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide
more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct
more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot
donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not
count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage
donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the
HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was established in
1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100 million
dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of
$100 or more.
How To Join
There are three ways to become a member of the
100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more
to Shriners Hospitals for Children; (2) By having your will
include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for
Children; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will
leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Shriners, please fill out the form on the right and send your
contribution to Al Malaikah Shrine’s Recorder Tom Reoch.
What You Receive
Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar
Club certificate. By contributing $100, you can feel like
a million, knowing that you have helped to ensure that
