Al Malaikahan Al Malaikahan - October -/ December November 2004 ‘08
We have had some very exciting and fun events this last two months. The Ventura
Parade was well attended and Al Malaikah looked so good that we have been
invited to participate in the Agoura Hills Parade on October 4, 2008. They were
very impressed with Al Malaikah and think that we would be a good addition to their parade.
Obviously, they are right. The Honored Ladies Luncheon was another well attended event
and I want to thank all who came to pay tribute to our widows. They are very important
to us. The Smoke Out was a wonderful event with 200 people in attendance. I want to
thank Merl Seastrom and his committee for their hard work in making this a premier
event. It gets better each year. Don’t miss it next year. We are still exploring the
possibility of forming a Cigar Society. If you enjoyed the Smoke Out this is the club
for you. Please contact Wolfgang Kupka (his address and number are in the directory)
if you have an interest. This would be a great club with Nobles getting together for fellowship while
smoking a cigar. We are also still looking for boat owners to form a Yacht Club. If you own a boat please
contact Sandy Pessell at sannbev@earthlink.net and join nobles with a like interest.
There are several events left for this year. I hope that you will join us and share the good times.
Paso Robles Parade is Saturday, October 11; Youth Dance, Friday, October 24; Ceremonial, Saturday,
October 25; Chief Rabban’s Fund Raiser, Sunday, October 26; Grand Master’s Reception and French
Degree, Saturday, November 15; Holiday Concert, Saturday, December 13; Temple Kids Christmas Party,
Sunday, December 14. The details on all these events are elsewhere in the magazine. The Divan and I
hope to see you there.
As always I appreciate everyone who has worked so hard making this year a success. If you
haven’t been here you are missing out on some great times. The Shrine is about having fun and helping
kids. Join us in accomplishing both.
SHC Hurricane “Ike” Update
Jim Full, Executive Vice President of Shriners Hospitals for Children, recently sent out an update
on the condition and status of our hospitals in Houston and Galveston following Hurricane Ike. The
Houston hospital now has power. However, it did not re-open until Thursday, September 18th
because the City of Houston issued a “boil order” for water. There is also a shortage of gasoline in
the area. It does not look like our facility was severely damaged. Before the storm hit, our patients
were transferred to the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, SHC-Shreveport or are residing in local
hotels.
In terms of Galveston, our hospital may be closed for at least a couple of weeks. Patients were
transferred to Cincinnati or Shreveport. No one is allowed on the island and there is no power.
We understand that there is a foot of water and mud throughout the first floor. One window on the first
floor was broken. The emergency generators had failed to maintain power and a new portable one is
being flown in and should be in service within 2-3 days. Unfortunately, many employees from both
Houston and Galveston have suffered damage to their own homes and will have difficulty getting to
work due to fallen trees and high water in the streets.
Calling all Nobles!
Stated Meeting
Monday, October 20
There is another great program
planned for the October 20 Stated
Meeting at the Shrine Auditorium.
Dinner will be delicious (see menu, below).
Al Malaikah will present the Officer of the
Quarter Award to a most deserving member
of LAPD. The guest speaker will be Detective
Ed Whyte, LAPD, who will discuss identity
theft. This is a subject of which everyone
should be aware. Det. Whyte will discuss the
history of this relatively new crime and will talk about what we can do
as individuals to minimize our risk. But don’t go home yet, because we
will have door prize drawings followed by special entertainment for our
ladies and non-Shriner guests while the Nobles attend the tiled business
meeting (so bring your 2008 dues card).
Nobles, if you’ve been to the previous Stated Meetings this year,
you know that you’re getting a first class dinner and that you’re having
a fun time. If you haven’t had a chance to get to a meeting, this is the
one to come to. Also, as before, your ladies and non-Shriner guests are
welcome and will also enjoy themselves with line dancing instructions or
just socializing.
The social period begins at 5:30 pm (the Shrine Band will play);
dinner is served 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm; followed by the program, door
prizes and the Stated Meeting and separate entertainment for ladies and
guests. The Purveyors will cook up another great meal as they have done
all year: salad, choice of flat iron steak or chicken breast, twice baked
potatoes, vegetables, rolls and butter, desert, and coffee, water, and soda.
All this is provided for only $5.00 per person.
Attendance has jumped at each of the quarterly Stated Meetings
this year. Since this will be the last Stated Meeting in 2008, we want
to try to boost attendance even higher. So Illustrious Sir Hal Justice,
Potentate, will make dinner free to any Noble initiated during 2008 plus
all candidates registered for the October 25th Ceremonial and their topline
signers. You may bring your application to the Stated Meeting if you
You will need your 2008 dues card to stay for the Stated
Meeting. If you have not yet received your 2008 dues card,
please contact Tom Reoch, Recorder, at 213-748-0173 as
soon as possible.
Bring your fez too. But if you can’t find it or want a
new one, you can take care of that before the Stated Meeting
begins. Other Shriners accessories will also be available for
purchase at that time.
So the Shrine does not waste food, please make your
reservation by Wednesday, October 15 by calling the Shrine
office at 213-748-0173.
Recorder’s Roost
This month, I would like to draw your attention to our 22 Hospitals. As you are aware we offer
1st class care at our hospitals at no charge to the children or their parents, this is something we
pride ourselves on, however I would like to single out our Los Angeles Hospital.
L.A. Hospital ranks 1 or 2 in most fields surveyed by the Executive Board in Tampa, and
never less than 4 in some areas.
We should all be proud of this achievement, however most if not all the credit goes to the
Administrative Staff, the Medical and Nursing Staff they my friends are “Second to None”
It would also be remiss of me not to single out our Volunteer Drivers, these Nobles
give their time and energy to pick up patients at the Bus, Train and Airports and it is always
done with a cheery smile, what an ad this is for Al Malaikah.
If you thought of doing some volunteer work this would be a great avenue, give us a call;
we will direct you to the proper person.
I am at the L.A. Hospital at least 6 times a month and I make a point of talking to the children and their parents, I feel
I get a more positive or negative answer from them regarding their views of our Hospital.
I can honestly say, I have never had a negative response from any of them, they are so grateful for the service and treatment
they get and in 100% of the ones I spoke to, they want to pass on their appreciation for all the Shriners do for their children.
As we approach the Holiday Season and we think, “what can we do for our kids” then here is a suggestion. The
Hospital loves all the Toys you give but their real need is for children’s socks and underwear for boys and girls, they need
them badly.
My heartfelt thanks to all you Nobles, your Ladies, Units and Shrine Clubs who do so much to bring smiles to
children’s faces.
THE 100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have
provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to
more than 800,000 children — without cost to them or
their families.
The money to provide these needed services
at 22 hospitals comes from many sources: community
donations; fundraising events; investment income; and
support from the Shriners of North America.
As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals
needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide
more specialized care, offer medical education and
conduct more research. Too many people believe that if
they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their
gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to
encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for
Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
was established in 1972. The club is named for its goal
of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment fund
through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.
HOW TO JOIN
There are three ways to become a member of the
100 Million Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or
more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; (2) By having
your will include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners
Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding a provision
to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners
Hospitals for Children. Shriners, please fill out the form
on the right and send your contribution to Al Malaikah
Shrine’s Recorder Tom Reoch.
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million
Dollar Club certificate. By contributing $100, you can
feel like a million, knowing that you have helped to
ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Children will be able
to continue helping children in the years to come.
Patients Thank Shriners for Helping Them Defy the Odds
Patients Brian Howard, David Grassi and Shana Howard
smile for the cameras at the 134th Imperial Council Session.
Following the premiere of the 2008 patient success video, “Defy
the Odds,” at the Imperial Council Session in St. Louis on July
2, featured patient Brian Howard sang “Broken Vow” by pop
singer Josh Groban. Brian and his twin sister, Shana, receive care for
burn injuries at the Cincinnati Shriners Hospital. David Grassi, who
is being treated for spina bifida at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital,
is also featured in the video. The teenagers thanked Shriners for the
wonderful care they receive at Shriners Hospitals for Children, which
has helped them “defy the odds.”
David Grassi
David was born with spina bifida, a congenital anomaly affecting the
development of the spinal cord. Throughout his childhood, he has
received extensive physical therapy and occupational therapy at the
St. Louis Shriners Hospital. When he was 11, he underwent a special
surgery to keep his hips from turning in. The surgery was successful,
and he is able to walk with crutches and braces today.
David, who will be a high school senior in the fall, has
made a name for himself as a competitive athlete. His favorite sports
include sled hockey, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair track. He
Article by, Jerry “Pogo” Zeldes
What It Means To Get Involved
participates in a local sports organization, Disabled Athlete Sports
Association, and travels all over the U.S. and the world to compete.
On June 28, he won a bronze medal in the 1500-meter wheelchair
exhibition at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore.
When David is not in school or training, he volunteers as a counselor
for St. Louis Variety, an organization that buys medical equipment for
kids with disabilities. After graduation, he hopes to attend a college
with a wheelchair sports team.
Brian and Shana Howard
When Brian and Shana were 2 years old, a house fire left them with
second- and third-degree burns on more than 40 percent of their
bodies. They spent a month at a local hospital, where they were
in medically induced comas for nearly two weeks. Once the twins
stabilized, they were transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children
— Cincinnati to receive expert burn care and begin the healing and
rehabilitation process. After several weeks, they were released to
their parents’ care and returned regularly for outpatient visits. They
have received many treatments and undergone several reconstructive
surgeries at the Cincinnati Shriners Hospital throughout their lives.
The twins, who recently graduated high school, have visited
several Shriners temples (chapters) over the years to share their story
and thank the men for their generosity. They enjoy connecting with
other patients whenever they can and look forward
to mentoring burn injury survivors at a week-long summer camp for
Shriners Hospitals burn patients. Brian will begin studying business
finance at DeVry University in Columbus, Ohio, this summer, and
Shana will pursue a degree in veterinary technology at the Bradford
School, also in Columbus, this fall.
More Surprises
After Brian sang, the patients’ families joined them on stage. Imperial Public
Relations Committee Chairman Jerry Gantt presented Brian and Shana
with iPods and David with a digital camera to thank them for sharing their
stories. They also received Shriners Hospitals for Children jackets.
While watching the Jerry Lewis telethon this year, I was reminded what it means to be a Shriner and to get involved in something
worthwhile. Twenty seven years ago when I crossed the Hot Sands, I was told that if I wanted to get something out of the Shrine I
had to get involved!
That was good advice and fortunate for me, Ernie Feld from the Caravan Patrol was sitting at the same table as me that night after the
ceremonial. Ernie invited me for a FREE dinner and after filling out an application (along with a check!) I was voted on and accepted to be a
SUB in the Caravan Patrol. We had 79 members at that time and of those 6 became Potentate and one Imperial Potentate! After three years I
left the Patrol due to business demands. The friendships made during that short time have lasted to the present time. Those guys were active
then and many are still active and so when I go to a meeting I don’t feel like an outsider, but rather a real member - seeing old familiar faces.
Fifteen years ago I was invited, by an ex-Patrolman, to another FREE dinner, he suggested I fill out an application just in case I wanted to
join as they can’t vote on you without an “application”. After filling out the application, Jim Brown suggested that I write out a check, “just
in case”, after all they can’t vote on you unless you have paid “your dues”! The night of the FREE dinner, I found myself a member of the Al
Malaikah Clown Unit! What did I get myself into?
Well, for all YOU NEW SHRINERS, that was one of the best things I have done in my life! Just seeing those smiles on the kids is
a special feeling that words can not describe. Our organization is one of the best in the world (too bad others don’t know about it). When
you get involved it is really true, you get much more than you give. The Clown Unit is a great way to have fun, and do something really
worthwhile, but if it is not the Clowns, FIND A UNIT OR A CLUB AND GET INVOLVED….THAT’S WHAT SHRINEDOM IS ALL
ABOUT. And remember…“A CHILD’S SMILE MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE”
