Greetings!
I am happy to report that we are getting more electronic subscribers to this newsletter; I’d love to have
everyone in the Barony getting it by email, so pass the word! I just need an email, and mundane and
SCA names - it’s free, it’s fun!
SEND ME STUFF! Articles, photographs of events, recipe redactions, poetry, cartoons, drawings &
artwork - anything! Let’s make this more than an event announcement newsletter.
I’d love to hear from everyone in the Barony!
Yours in Service, Tiercelin
ICE DRAGON IS COMING!
Check out all that is happening on the exclusive
online site at: http://www.ice-dragon.info.
Good Gentles of fair and sovereign Æthelmearc and unto the known
world do I Augusto Giuseppie da San Donato send greetings and word
of The Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon. Now that the snow
and ice are building up outside your homes this is the perfect time to
be thinking of the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon. This year
the Festival is being held one week later than in the past, on March 28,
2009, to avoid any undue conflicts with other events and to get back to
the original date and concept of the event.
The Festival is being held at a brand new site this year. A single building
site. I might add! The new site is the Western New York Event
Center, located at 10995 Main St. in Clarence, New York 14031. The
site opens at 9 am and closes at 10 pm.
Costs for the event are as follows:
Pre-reg At door
Adult $12.00 $15.00
Youth 6-12 yrs. $6.00 $7.00
Children
From the Baron:
Ice Dragon is coming up and Agusto needs all of the help he can get, and he needs people to volunteer
to work at the event. Please contact him to find out what jobs need to be done.
From the Fencing Marshal:
We will be, most likely, moving operations back to the Elk’s club. I
know it is a haul but driving an extra few miles for fight practice is better than no practice at all. I will be making
three trips to Houston, TX in the upcoming weeks; I will need another fencing marshal to be at practice on, 2/25,
3/18 and 4/8.
From the Brewer’s Guild
We bottled our Winter Porter (after adding about a cup of amber spray malt to prime) and a case was delivered to
His Majesty at Seven Deadly Sins. The next project will be a German-style, half-wheat beer for our Highnesses’s
Coronation. A date will be announced when we can nail down our schedule..
From the Archery Marshal
Shooting Days at Doc’s Archery
February 20th 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Belgraunde
Captain of Archers
Equestrian
We are practicing every other Sunday at 1 pm at Tiercelin’s. The next practice is February 22.
From the SCribal Guild
Greetings from the Scribal Guild. Please make sure to have your assignments for Ice Dragon complete for the
March Meeting. The more we get in early, the less we’ll have to worry about that day. And the less someone will
need to chase down His Excellency for a signature.
YIS Zosia Kowalewska
Exchequer
We have 5002.19 in the bank account.
Thrown Weapons
PAVILIONS & SAYINGS
OK - sure, this site has great resources for medieval pavilions, including photos of pavilions from
around the Known World, but what I really love is the SCA t-shirt sayings page. All your favorites
are here, like: “Practice Safe Government...Use a Kingdom”, “The Way to a Man’s Heart is Through
His Ribs”, “Never piss off a bard, for they are not subtle, and your name scans to Greensleeves” and
my personal favorite.... “Elizabethan Christmas: Codpiece on earth, good frills for men.” Enjoy!
The days activities will feature the Æthelmearc Youth Combat Championship. Adult heavy weapons and
fencing are included in the program. We are pleased to announce that the Kingdom Arts and Sciences
Championship will be held at Coronation. In addition, we
will also hold an A&S competition for all ages based on the
works and mind of Leonardo da Vinci! Details on both A&S competitions
below.
As there is nothing quite like looking at old photos to remind
us of how we got started in the SCA. At different events
and meetings, we are often asked to bring old photo albums
so that others may look through them and stories may be
told, but without context, some of the best information is lost. So, to
help share some of these wonderful photos, and the stories behind them,
there will be a photo contest at Coronation. Each entry is asked to be
one “page” of photos - whether it be a poster board or a scrap book page
or a single photo - with a single theme. Be it a person, an activity or a
place, display some of your favorite photos, and share those favorite
memories with others, and the new King and Queen will award a prize to the one that pleases them most.
There will be several fund raisers held, so come prepared for fun stuff and bargains! The fund raisers include
a basket raffle, a bring-your-penny-jar-jug-dump and will benefit the youth combat program and
the Pennsic favors. Merchants are to contact Jenna. Hall space is limited, contact her early. Outside
tent space is available.
DIRECTIONS:
From Buffalo: take the I-190 North**over the Grand Island bridges. Exit at Buffalo Ave. Turn right and follow
Buffalo Avenue to the Church. It will be on the right.
From the East: Take the I-90 to the I-290 to I-190 North. Follow from ** above.
From Canada: Take the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge to the I-190. Exit at Buffalo Avenue to the Church. There
will be signs.
Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Championship
As it is Maynard and Liadain’s wish to showcase the artisans of Æthelmearc to all the Known World, the
theme will be Largess. Entrants are asked to provide at least one item of largess crafted by themselves, in
any suitable media of their choice, to be donated at the event for the Crown to give out as gifts during Their
Reign. Multiple items of largess are allowed and encouraged. Candidates should provide a business-card(s)
or equivalent written note(s) with their name (and contact info if desired), to be given to the eventual recipient
along with the largess, for due acknowledgment of their skill and generosity. Entrants are also encouraged
to present a portfolio (photo or written summaries) of their body of creative works. This way, artisans may
display their greater works while submitting a smaller portion for the competition (ie. a piece of garb may
be displayed while the hand crafted buttons are
entered). Basic documentation is requested (typewritten
preferred, no more than two pages please).
All are encouraged to participate in this event from
novice to master, young to old. In addition to the
selection of the Champion, there will be additional
prizes awarded (ie. Best Youth Entry, Populace
Choice, Laurel’s Choice). Questions should be
directed to the current A&S Champion, Ld. Pearce
Redsmythe, wiliam@rencraft.com, 607-330-2598
weekday evenings from 5 till 11 PM, and weekends
from 9 AM till 11 PM.
The “Leonardo” A&S Competition - Open to All Artisans
Become the Leonardo da Vinci of your time! We call all gentles to display their imaginations, in the same
manner as that of the Original Renaissance Man! Imagine how Leonardo might “invent” a modern-day
device or custom, from a medieval point-of view. From the serious (reproductions of da Vinci’s drawings or
paintings) to the sublime (remember DaVinci’s tank? All Media welcome. For extra credit, write backwards
(DaVinci’s “secret code”) and provide a translation. Ingenuity and cleverness count for a lot. It can be as silly
as something from “The Flintstones” or an alternate theory of his greatness (Mona Lisa had rotten teeth, so
she could not smile). Bring your entries, plus any documentation you may have, and any explanation your
piece may need, to the A&S Competition Table, between 10-12. Use your imagination, your cunning, and
your sense of humor! For questions, contact Brandric Slaywrock at brandric1@netscape.com or call 716-
832-5094 before 9pm. This competition is open to all age groups, all levels of artistry! Entries may be crossentered
in both competitions!
