Saint Mary’s School
Saint Mary’s School is a Catholic grade school from
preschool to eighth grade. Along with
their regular academic activities, the
children study their faith and engage in
service activities each day. There are
daily updates at

It is not too late to register your child at St. Mary’s
School. Please contact Mr. Rosenbeck at 548-2345 at
the school to talk about the possibilities.
Principal Rosenbeck will be working throughout the

You can purchase SCRIP before and after Mass, in
the school office or at Barga Heating and Cooling.
Effective Thursday, July 15 payment must be made
in full prior to or upon receipt of all SCRIP cards and

Religion encompasses Sunday

Word, Elementary Religious
Education on Wednesday nights,
Confirmation Class, Junior and Senior High School
GLORY and Vacation Bible School.
Registrations for PSR are due now. Please

Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place
during the 10:30 am Mass. The children,
kindergarten through third grade,
have the opportunity to listen to
the readings, discussion,
intercessory prayers and creed offered to their
level of comprehension. We return in time for
the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
All PSR - elementary, Confirmation and High
School begins on Wednesday, September 8.
We will begin with a cook out at 6 pm near the
Youth House. At 7 pm we have separate
sessions for parents, elementary students and
GLORY. Tim Herbert from the Archdiocesan
Office of Youth Ministry will speak to the adults
on “Will Our Kids Have Faith!” All parishioners
are invited.

Adult Education & Formation
Questions for you to ponder: How comfortable are
you in explaining your knowledge of the Catholic Faith?

afternoon and evening to go “Deep in History, Deep in

RCIA - Inquirers welcome! If you are interested in

A reunion of Maria Stein Marriage
Encounter couples will be held on
Saturday, August 28 at the Maria Stein
Retreat House Spiritual Center. Anyone
who made an Encounter is invited for an
evening of remembering. It will include Mass and dinner
with Father Jim Dugal. More details to follow.
The Third Annual Magnificat
women’s one day retreat will be
held on Saturday, September 18 at
St. Charles Seminary. The program
will begin with Mass at 8 am and will
include speakers all speaking to this
year’s theme of forgiveness. A light
breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Adult Study meets each Monday at 7 pm in the lower
level of the school. This week we will view and discuss
the “Forerunners to the Reformation” DVD by Scott

The Spiritual Center at Maria Stein will host the
combined Catholic Faith Rally and Healing Mass on
Tuesday, August 17. Individual prayer for healing from
6:30 - 7 pm. Mass begins at 7 pm. Next month the
Healing Mass will be on Tuesday, September 14.
Tuesday mornings from 9 - 10 am following Mass and
Rosary, we have a DVD presentation from the Coming
Home series. Come and join us.
St. Remy Parish will be hosting a prayer workshop
on Tuesday, August 17 from 6:30 - 9 pm in the
rectory basement. Presenter Carolyn Stucke will
review the nature and meaning of prayer, the various
ways to pray and the relationship between individual,
communal and liturgical prayer. This workshop meets
the prayer requirement for the catechist basic

St. Patrick’s Church in Troy is welcoming Mr. Tim
Francis. He will speak on the Eucharist on Wednesday,
August 18 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Tim describes himself
as a Sunday-only church goer who went through a
conversion experience. His conversion experience was
heavily influenced by a deeper awareness and love of
the Blessed Sacrament. He says “join us for a lifechanging
event!”
Is your marriage hurting in any way? Then please
consider Retrouvaille (ret’ro-vi) - a program designed to
help heal and renew marriages. Retrouvaille is for
marriages that have lost some of their spark, for
marriages having difficulties in communication and even
those marriages on the edge of separation or divorce.

A new series of classes on the symptom-thermal
method of Natural Family Planning will begin on

strengthen a marriage as well as be an effective way to

Faith-filled, caring people needed to teach or help

André House of Arizona is a house of hospitality
that serves poor and homeless people in their
efforts to escape life on the streets. Ministries include
evening food lines, houses of hospitality for men and
women, clothing distribution, referrals, neighborhood
outreach to poor families and children, companionship
and community events and shower and locker services.
Andre House is staffed by a community of full-time
volunteers who live, pray and work in a common life of
service, spirituality and simplicity. We ask for a one-year
commitment in Phoenix, Arizona. Men and women,
ages 21 and above, Catholic, willing to live in
community, follow a simple lifestyle, and make decisions
collaboratively are eligible. You must have a great
dedication to follow Jesus by feeding, clothing,
sheltering and befriending the poorest among us. Room

The goal of Bethlehem Farm, a Catholic community
in Appalachia, is to teach sustainable farming
practices and to transform lives through service
with the local community. We invite volunteers to join
in living the Gospel cornerstones of community, service,
prayer, and simplicity. Volunteers at Bethlehem Farm
live in community year-round and provide retreats for
youth and adults combined with community service.
Opportunities for ministry include rural Appalachian
ministry, construction, home repair, social work, retreat
planning, youth ministry, office management,
hospitability, gardening and community building.
Volunteers serve for one year with an option for a
second. Volunteers must at least 21 years old. Single,
widowed, and religious accepted. Applicants must be
open to collaborative ministry with volunteers and local
residents and have a desire to live a lifestyle based on
community, service, simplicity, and prayer. A willingness
to learn necessary construction community development
skills is needed for ministry. The program provides
room, board, monthly stipend, medical, dental and vision
insurance and local transportation. Training, staff
development and retreats provided. Loan deferment is
available. Applications are accepted throughout the
year.
Volunteers are needed for the Grace Center at 433
Water Street. If you have any questions about our
ministry with the Grace Center, please contact Paul

After the priest invites the people to receive
communion, they express their unworthiness for it.
The first English translation had the people say,
“Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,” but the
revised translation puts it this way: “Lord, I am not
worthy that you should enter under my roof.”
The revision expresses more closely the words that
have always been there in Latin. The first
translation recognized the difficulty of the
metaphor, but the revised missal restores it in
hopes that it will provoke meditation and prayer.
Why “under my roof”? The words, of course, come
from the story of Jesus’ healing the servant of the
centurion (Mt 8:8; Lk 7:6). In Matthew’s account,
the centurion himself comes to Jesus, but in Luke’s
version, he sends representatives. In either case, he
doesn’t feel right having Jesus come to his home,
and he has complete trust in Jesus’ power over
sickness and evil. And, perhaps, he just wants to
avoid inconveniencing the master. His statement is
one of faith, trust, and respect. So Jesus works the
miracle.
The invitation to communion should call this story
to mind. Some people may mistakenly think that
the new words refer to the roof of the mouth. But
its intent is to quote the centurion. We should have
the same attitude: faith, trust, and respect. Jesus,
unfailingly, in spite of our unworthiness, still
draws us to his table. We are not praying for the
physical healing of our servant; we are praying for
the spiritual healing of our soul. We can be
confident that our prayer will be answered as we
leave our place, go to the minister, and present
ourselves for communion.
