St Paul’s High School Mission Statement:
St Paul’s High School is missioned by the Jesuits in English Canada to educate students as
whole persons to become men for others and so assist the Church in building the Kingdom
of God.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Parents and Students
Happy Easter!
Signs of Spring are all around
starting with the soccer trip
to Europe, the annual Phona-thon
that begins the second
week of April for which 20 or more students
have been hired to contact St Paul’s alumni and
friends, the very successful Fashion Show is set
for 16 April and the Grad packages are prepared
and ready to go out the second week of April as
well. Grad information will also be available on
the website on or about 10 April.
After nine years in the Advancement Office
Sandy Russell has decided to retire. Sandy has
been a faithful employee and friend of St Paul’s
from the first day. Sandy plans to spend time
with her family, doing a little travelling and
getting around to the many things she has
wanted to do and for which she will now have
time. On behalf of all of us at St Paul’s I want
to say thank you to Sandy and wish her a very
relaxing retirement. As Sandy officially ends
her time with us, she has offered any assistance
we might need in the future and is more than
willing to help out when needed. God bless,
Sandy.
Pete Gulka, a married man from Edmonton, has
assumed Sandy’s role in the Advancement
Office. As he moves himself, his wife and two
children to Winnipeg, I want to extend our
welcome and blessings to Pete and his family
and wish him well in his new role as Manager
Giving and Alumni Relations.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
Happy Easter! After another very busy month and
what seems like a very long time since the
Christmas Break I am very much looking forward
to a change from the routine business of the
1

school with the approach of Spring Break. This
year I will be travelling with the
Crusader Soccer Euro-Tour to
Italy, Austria and Germany along
with Coaches Krebs and Morrison,
Fr Fogarty SJ, Fr Boutilier SJ, and
Mr Stadnyk. It promises to be a
very enjoyable, educational and worldview
expanding trip for the student athletes and staff
members alike. I hope that you and your sons also
enjoy Spring Break and that your sons will take
the time to recharge their batteries in preparation
for the final push towards June! It officially
begins when school ends on Friday March 28 th
and ends on Monday April 7 th at 8:30 a.m. when
classes commence once again.
We have now dealt with three separate incidents
involving threats written on a wall in the Locker
Room area. As I have written extensively about
this in the past I will not readdress all of the
points I made in previous issues. Once again we
had an almost normal attendance day but given
the effects this has on the community as a whole
we are continuing to take this very seriously. As I
noted in my letter before the most recent incident
we will be re-examining the issue of the length of
the June Exam period. At this point it will be
most assuredly shortened by at least one day so
that we can have at least one more uninterrupted
day of regular classes. The dates for review
classes and posting of the exemption list will
likewise be adjusted. The new Exam Period
schedule and other dates will be communicated in
the May edition of this Newsletter and on the
website.
In the month of March various extracurricular
seasons come to an end, many with dramatic
results, and various programs participate in
festivals and competitions. The Basketball,
Wrestling and Hockey Playoffs and Provincials,
Dinner Theatre, Provincial Debating, the Brandon
Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Foundation Youth in
Philanthropy Group site visits, another Maroon
and White led Mission Week, Lenten liturgies,
the annual visit from the Jesuit Vocation Director
Fr Len Altilia SJ to the Grade 12 classes, and a
lot of teaching and learning all took place this
month. In addition, the third Kairos Retreat of
the year took place, and with its completion a
very large percentage of Grade 12 students have
now participated in this very important
experience. I appreciate the opportunity to help
guide the (educational) process, to witness your
son’s accomplishments, our teachers’ hard work
and commitment, and hopefully, in some small
way, further the mission of the school to educate
your sons to become men for others.
The excellence in various programs and level of
activity at the school can only take place thanks
to the hard work of our students and the
dedication of our staff. I am very grateful to all
who contribute to furthering the school’s Mission
and am proud of the accomplishments of our
students, teachers and coaches. In particular, I
would like to thank and congratulate various
people, teams and groups for some recent
accomplishments:
$ First of all, I would like to thank all Grade
10 students and parents for their patience and
cooperation throughout the process of
implementing the changes to the Grade 11
before going on to a quarter final loss with only
an eight point differential with the eventual
to thank Mr Dave Owczar, for his work with the
Grade 9 Crusaders who made it to the league
MacCharles ’11, and Tanner Twerdun ’09 on
both winning two medals at the Boeing Indoor
games, to other athletes who won medals and the
numerous athletes who achieved personal bests!
Coach McMillan says training for the Outdoor
Season will begin in earnest in April but the boys
should be following their individual training
plans throughout Spring Break and early April on
their own.
$ Congratulations to Head Coach Brian
later in this
newsletter about an
Art Class that our past Art teacher, Mrs
Bernadette Phillips, who retired a few
years ago, will be offering on Thursday
evenings in May. It is open to any adult
member of the St Paul’s community who
is interested. Since retiring Mrs Phillips
has been conducting many art classes for
adults through various agencies and has
decided to offer one at St Paul’s in
response to requests from members of
your community.
Principal=s Last Word
During the Grade 9 Parent Meeting in late
February, I made mention of a recent study that
was reported in the journal Pediatrics which
examined the effect of computer games and
thrilling movies after studying and before
sleeping. The study involved healthy 12-14 year
old boys who were taking no medications and
found that boys who “relaxed” by playing a
“heart pounding” computer game or a thrilling
movie had their sleep patterns disrupted and their
ability to consolidate recent learning (such as
homework or preparation for tests) into memory
significantly reduced. The study suggests that
such activities could decisively and negatively
affect the learning process. All the more reason
you should perhaps encourage your sons to read a
novel or other useful reading material after
concluding their study and before going to bed.
You may want to consider going to the parent
evening that Winnipeg School Division is
sponsoring on the excitement and challenges of
parenting “teens.” It is open to the general public
so you can phone to register if you are interested
(see the notice about this evening later in this
newsletter).
To all Grade 12 parents I would like to issue my
annual reminder about Graduation activities.
Please note that the only official Graduation
Activities sponsored by the School include the
Mother-Son Mass and Breakfast and the
Graduation Tree Planting in May, the
Father/Parent-Son Golf Tournament (on Sports
Day which this year will be May 8 th ), the
Graduation Dinner and Dance, the Graduation
INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSES
Those students in grades 11 and 12 taking
Distance Learning courses should take notice of
the following deadlines as published by the
Distance Learning Unit if the students want to
have a mark in their course(s) by June 30.
For graduating students, all term work must be
received by the Distance Learning Unit and all
exams requested by May 1. (Notify Mr Smith of
your request and he will request them from the
Distance Learning Unit.) Effectively, this means
that term work must be completed by late April.
Exams must be returned to the Distance
Education Office by June 2.
For grade eleven students, St. Paul’s general
policy is that credits REQUIRED for the
successful completion of grade eleven must be
received by June 30. Hence, students in this
situation should follow the above deadlines.
Mr J. Smith, Distance Learning Coordinator
You are cordially invited
to attend
Bing Crosby Speech Competition
and the 35th Annual
“AN EVENING YOU’SE CAN’T REFUSE”
The St Paul’s High School
Dramatic Society presented
four evenings of dinner
theatre based on the themes
of crime, detection and The
Godfather to the delight of the audiences.
Theatre goers were greeted by a group of
detectives, a sidekick and the incomparable James
Bond (Jess Neufeld ’11) who offered servings of
bruschetta and drinks “shaken not stirred.” The
audience was entertained by the sneak attack of
Cato (Tim Sandron ’09) on the clueless
Inspector Clouseau (Alex Pawlowsky ’10) who
managed to fool his little friend and escape.
After appetizers, the evening continued with the
presentation of “Whodunit” by Anne Coulter
Martens and directed by Mr Ray Comeault.
Four famous detectives: (Joseph Broda ’11,
Elysa Sandron SMA ’11, James Arkle ’08 and
Nicole Caron VM ’10) were challenged to solve
a mystery and find out “Whodunit.” An
obnoxious junior G-man (Daniel Tompkins ’10)
insisted on helping them, much to their
annoyance. Numerous clues were dropped
including the hiring of an unusual “hit man”
named Jake (Anthony Foderaro ’09) by sweet
old grandma (Andrea Jackson SMA ’09).
Everyone is led to believe that crotchety old
Uncle Eben (Jake Simoens ’10) both hated and
feared by his beautiful niece Alice (Kaitlynn
Porath SMA ’08) and her fiancé Malcolm
(Kurtis Hodge ’09) is the intended victim until it
is revealed that Uncle Eben did the deed himself
with a mousetrap and a piece of cheese.
Come to watch some of St Paul’s most
talented Orators in action.

After the salad was served, the audience
participated in “The Adventures of Jack
Hammer” written and directed by Mr Dave
Beeston (’76). The three Jack Hammers
(Alexander Pulak ’08, Eric Williams ’09 and
Carey Buss ’09) co-opted several audience
members to take various roles in the play. The
audience followed the case as Jack tried to find
the missing Brad (Myles McInnes ’11) for his
fiancé, Della only to discover that Brad was
already married to the lovely Carmella
(Johnathon Galbraith ’10), daughter of the
“Don.” In the ensuing hail of bullets everyone
except Jack ends up “sleeping with the fishes.”
Thankfully the cake wasn’t spattered too badly
and could still be served for dessert.
During the wedding reception at the elegant Ba
Da Bing Room the audience was served a
wonderful chicken parmigiana by twelve “wise
guys” all named Guido. As part of the festivities
the audience was entertained by the singing
stylings of the Minnesota Association For Italian
Americans (MAFIA) men’s’ choir under the
direction of Mrs Jacqueline Jackson and by the
drama band conducted by Mr Alain Guilmette.
After a dessert of cannoli was served, it was time
for the final theatrical presentation of the evening,
“They’re Hardly Boys” again written and directed
by Mr Dave Beeston ’76. This play follows the
aging Frank (Alex Pawlowsky ’10) and Joe
(Stephen Shannon ’08) Hardy as they solve their
645 th case. The evil Mr B. (Gabriel Thiessen
’09) has decided to take over the world and starts
his mission by trying to get the Hardy boys out of
the way. His henchmen, Raj (Tim Sandron ’09)
and Jeb (Matt Borody ’09) lure the Hardy boys
into a trap by kidnapping, pretty and vivacious
Iola Morton (Patrick Laferriere ’08), Joe’s long
time girlfriend. The boys follow Iola into the trap
and, naturally turn the tables on Mr B. and his
gang.
The wonderful meal was organized and arranged
by Ms Anique Sala. She was ably assisted by
many parents, faculty, staff, and friends of St
Paul’s Drama. The dinner service was done by
members of the cast who took the opportunity to
interact with the audience in their shall we say
“connected” style, if you’se know what we mean.
The bar service was under the auspices of Brent
Kolton (‘92).
All three plays were produced by Mr Greg
Matthew (’72) with the capable artistic
assistance of Mr Joel Adair. The makeup crew
was directed by Mrs Linda Monasterski and
consisted of many faculty, parents and staff. Ms
Sandra Caron and Mrs Linda Monasterski
costumed all of the characters many of whom had
more than one role for a total of over fifty
costumes.
After the Sunday performance Fr
Alan Fogarty, SJ, the President of St
Paul’s, acted as master of ceremonies
for the presentation of awards. The Fr
J.J. Murray Award for most promising newcomer
to drama was presented to Sean Stephensen ’11
The Kelly Production Award for stage crew work
was given to Robert Schmidt ’09. The Fr F.
Obrigewitsch Award for smaller, but continuous
contributions to drama over their years at St
Paul’s was presented to Patrick Laferriere ’08
and James Arkle ’08. The Fr J.J. Pungente
Award for spirit, cooperation and leadership was
given to Alexander Pulak ’08.
CRUSADER FOOTBALL – TRYOUTS
For the past 8 – 9 years interest
in football at St Paul’s High
School has been very high. As a
result we are in a position where
we cannot keep every interested
student-athlete on one of the
school’s two Varsity football
teams. As well, because the
number of interested students (veterans and
rookies) has been high we have to hold our
tryouts on two weekends to accommodate all
interested students. The use of weekend tryout
camps limits the overlap with most of the spring
sports at St Paul’s. This year, because of the
timing of both Provincial Football team tryouts
and the May long weekend, one of our tryout
weekends is on the Mother’s Day weekend.
On Tuesday, April 8 th there will be an
information and sign-up meeting for all interested
students who DID NOT play Crusader Football
in 2007. This meeting will take place in the
Aulneau Room at lunch.
The Crusader Football program will be holding
tryouts for the 2008 team on two weekends. April
25 th , 26 th , and 27 th is the weekend of our Rookie
Camp (only those students who did not play
Crusader football last season) and May 10 th and
There are a limited number
of five and seven-week term
positions available in the
Maintenance Department at
SPHS for student employment during the summer
months. The duties involve all of the assorted
maintenance tasks one would expect to occur in a
large institution during a maintenance period. A
number of student positions will be designated
internal maintenance positions while the
remainder will be tasked with exterior
maintenance/grounds keeping work.
Students will be supplied with all necessary tools
and safety equipment for the tasks required and
will be well supervised. This is an excellent
opportunity for young men to get, perhaps, their
first paid work experience, as well as a good start
at gaining a reference for future employment. It
is also desirable in that it will give them an
opportunity to carry out meaningful physical
work in a real-world setting, allowing them to
realize the duties and responsibilities that may be
placed upon them as a member of a team.
Application forms will be available from Ms
Caron at the Reception Desk beginning on
Monday, 05 May 2008 and must be returned by
Friday, 23 May 2008 in order to have them
processed in time for the start of summer
employment.
REFLECTIONS…
From the St Paul’s High School Prayer Circle
WORDS TO PONDER:
Jesus has many who love His
Kingdom in Heaven, but few
who bear His Cross.
He has many who desire
comfort, but few who desire
suffering.
He finds many to share His feast, but few His
fasting.
All desire to rejoice with Him, but few are willing
to suffer for His sake.
Many follow Jesus to the Breaking of Bread, but
few to the drinking of the Cup of His Passion.
Many admire His miracles, but few follow Him in
the humiliation of His Cross.
Many love Jesus as long as no hardship touches
them.
Many praise and bless Him, as long as they are
receiving any comfort from Him.
But if Jesus withdraw Himself, they fall to
complaining and utter dejection.
They who love Jesus for His own sake, and not
for the sake of comfort for themselves, bless Him
in every trial and anguish of heart, no less than in
the greatest joy.
Discipline
Prompt your teen to think about
consequences, consider risks
New brain research confirms what
parents have always suspected: Even
the brightest teen lacks a fullydeveloped
brain. The part of the brain
that develops last (the frontal lobes)
governs decision-making. It’s also the part of the
brain that helps us think through the
consequences of our actions.
This knowledge may help you understand why
your teen answers the question, “How could you
do that?” by saying, “It seemed like a good idea
at the time.” So your task, right through the teen
years, is to be your teen’s brain.
You will need to draw your teen’s attention to the
consequences and possible risks of her actions.
Prompt her to think about situations by asking
questions like, “If you go out tonight, will you
have enough time to finish your history project?”
“What will you do if there’s alcohol at the party?”
Remember, when it comes to questionable or
risky situations, you always have the option of
saying no. Just because your teen really wants to
go to a party doesn’t mean you have to say yes.
Ready to Learn
Work with the school by making
sure your teen is ready to learn
You’re undoubtedly aware of the
importance of working with your
teen’s school. You attend the parentteacher
conferences, read notices
from school and join the parentteacher
organization. Working with your teen’s
school as a team in these ways contributes to his
success.
There’s another way you can work with your
teen’s school—without leaving your home. It’s
by sending your teen to school “ready to learn.”
Here’s how:
• Make sure your teen gets enough sleep.
He’s probably very busy with homework
and activities, but getting enough sleep
(eight or more hours) will ensure that his
brain is awake when he gets to school.
• Insist on breakfast. Studies have shown
that students who eat breakfast are more
alert and achieve more than students who
skip the “most important meal of the day.”
• Monitor homework. It’s difficult to help
with homework in high school, especially
in advanced science and math classes. But
you can make sure your teen is
completing homework by asking to look it
over when he’s finished. Also provide a
quiet, well-lit place for him to study.
• Talk about school. Simply talking about
what your teen learned at school each day
shows him that you think school is
important. Knowing you care about
school will affect how he feels about it.
He may try harder as a result.
It Matters: Test Preparation
Let your teen manage anxiety with
stress-relieving strategies
Whether they are
preparing for their
driver’s test or a big
state exam, today’s
teens have to learn
how to perform well
under pressure.
Teens who are
stressed may end up performing poorly.
Here’s how you can help your teen manage test
stress:
• Put things in perspective. Help your teen
see that tests are just part of life—like
cleaning his room or going to the dentist.
He should try to do his best on tests.
However, your teen should also realize
that a test reflects what happened on one
day in his life. If your teen does poorly on
a test, that doesn’t mean he is a failure.
• Teach relaxation techniques. Teach your
teen to tense and then relax muscles. Start
by tightening the toes, counting to three,
and then relaxing. Move up the legs, arms,
shoulders, neck and head. After doing
this, your teen will feel more relaxed.
• Visualize. Athletes practice “seeing”
themselves making the goal. They say this
rehearsal makes it easier when game time
comes. Help your teen do the same,
picturing himself feeling confident and
prepared.
Parent Quiz
Are you staying involved in your
teenager’s life?
Teens can be secretive creatures. So
staying involved with a teen’s life
presents a parent with special
challenges. While you can’t force
your teen to communicate, you can
do things to keep the lines open.
See how you’re doing by answering yes or no to
each statement below:
____1. I know where my teen is. If she’s out with
friends and plans change, she knows to call to tell
me where she will be.
____2. I spend some time each day with my teen.
Often, it’s just “hanging out” time—in the car,
preparing dinner, watching TV. These are the
times when communication happens most
naturally.
____3. I attend school events.
____4. I encourage my teen’s friends to make our
home a place where they can spend time. When
they’re there, I don’t leave.
____5. I plan regular one-on-one time for my teen
and me to do something we both enjoy.
How well are you doing?
Each yes means you’re doing a good job of
creating ways for your teen to keep in touch. For
no answers, try those ideas.
Evening Art Course for Adults: Anyone Can Draw
Anyone Can Draw is a course for those who have always wanted to draw, but who think
that it may be too difficult to try.
Bernadette Phillips retired from St. Paul’s High School four years ago, after implementing
the Art Programme and then teaching it until she retired. The full scale murals in the Art
room and many of the works around the school, including the pop art large paintings in
the Cafeteria, were completed under her direction.
These days, she is to be found working on private commissions and teaching at various art clubs and in
Continuing Education programmes in two school divisions.
Following requests from some of her colleagues, Bernadette is offering a course of five two hour lessons
on drawing for members of the wider St. Paul’s community, starting on Thursday, May 8 from 7-9 pm. in
the Art Room at St. Paul’s.
All materials will be provided and you will learn how to draw and shade like a professional.
Dates: May 8, 15, 22, 29 and June 5.
Cost:
$60 Total for five sessions.
Registration: Please pick up a registration form at the Front Desk
