Eighteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time
PRO LIFE REFLECTION
Suddenly, there were two men talking with Him,
Moses and Elijah. —LUKE 9:30
REFLECTION AND PRAYER
Jesus was transfigured; the glory of His divinity shone
through His humanity, which reminds us that humanity
always expresses the image of God. The Transfiguration
was meant to remind the Apostles that death would not
have the last word.
Jesus, may Your Transfiguration be a powerful reminder
that You have brought about a new kingdom of life.
YEAR OF FAITH
DIOCESE OF JOLIET
AUGUST CATECHISM CORNER
Being Catholic means being catholic… that is to
say, “universal.” Our faith goes beyond our local
experience of church, stretching to the four corners
of the earth. We are a global community made up
of people with different cultures, languages, and
experiences – yet wherever we go on this planet,
the faith remains constant (as “all nations shall
stream towards it,” in Isaiah 2:2-4). This month,
we remember that we are, as the Second Vatican
Council put forth in “Gaudium et Spes,” a Church
in the modern world, a human community together
in God’s house. In that spirit, we pray the universal
prayer of the Church, the Liturgy of the Hours, to
remind us of our common faith “so that there may
be no division in the body, but that the parts may
have the same concern for one another” (as St.
Paul said in 1 Cor 12:1-31).
AUGUST 4
“First, the Church is catholic because Christ is
present in her. ‘Where there is Christ Jesus,
there is the Catholic Church.’ In her subsists
the fullness of Christ’s body united with its head;
this implies that she receives from him ‘the
fullness of the means of salvation’ which he has
willed: correct and complete confession of faith,
full sacramental life, and ordained ministry in
apostolic succession. The Church was, in this
fundamental sense, catholic on the day of
Pentecost…” CCC, n. 830
AUGUST PRAYER INTENTION
For immigrants who have brought
new life to our communities.
Sean Duggan
On His Birthd ay
August 4, 2013 — Page Nine
The Duggan family saw firsthand what
a difference a new toy could make for
a child who is trying to get well.
Join us in brightening up the day
for a group of very brave children.
On August 7, Sean’s 15th Birthday, toys will be
distributed to children undergoing treatment on
the Oncology floor of Ann and Robert H. Lurie
Children’s Hospital. The first four toy drives were
a HUGE success with over 800 toys collected!
