MAILING AND PLEDGE REMINDERS
A SECOND REQUEST FOR A CONTRIBUTION to the
2012 Catholic Ministries Appeal is in the mail to all
parishioners who have not made a contribution.
The Appeal provides critical funding to diocesan
ministries that serve individuals and parishes
throughout the Diocese of Joliet. If you receive this
mailing, please respond generously. You will be
helping both our diocese and our parish.
ALSO, THE SECOND MONTHLY REMINDERS have been sent
to those that made an in-pew pledge to the Appeal.
Those that pledged by direct mail have already
received payment coupons. Thank you for your gifts.
Please make your payment as soon as possible.
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, you can bring your pledge
payments to Mass and place them in the basket.
The parish will forward them to the diocese.
AFTER OUR PARISH EXCEEDS ITS CMAA GOAL in
paid pledges, 50% of any additional funds are
returned for use in our parish.
We are now at 97% parish participation
with 547 donors and our total gifts are
$107,280. Our target goal is $111,913.

TODAY'S FOCUS:
THE VITALITY OF THE VINE
The tremendous vitality of Jesus as the vine with many
branches is seen in the way that the early Church grew
even in the midst of persecution. The lives of men like
Peter, Barnabas, and Saul of Tarsus were some of the
earliest manifestations of this vitality revealed in the
work they did.
• FIRST READING
Barnabas reported to the Apostles how Saul had seen the
Lord on the way (Acts 9:26-31).
God had called Paul (Saul). The reaction of the Christian
community in Jerusalem is consistent with what one
would expect. They were afraid and thought Paul’s
conversion might be a ruse. But Barnabas served as an
intermediary, and Paul was received by them with great
joy. He boldly proclaimed the good news until opposition
developed. He was then sent on to Tarsus. But opposition
could not hinder the growth of the Church, for the Holy
Sprit was guiding it.
• SECOND READING
This is His Commandment: that we may believe and love
(1 John 3:18-24).
Christians are encouraged to practice their faith in action
and not just speak about it. We should trust in God’s
goodness, for God is greater than we are. We should place
our hearts in God and make Him the center of all that we
are. How can we know that God is the center? We must
believe in Jesus as the only-begotten Son of God, and we
have to keep the Commandments. This means that we
have to recognize that our faith has both a vertical and
horizontal dimension. We must love both God and our
brothers and sisters.
• GOSPEL
Whoever remains in Me and I in Him will bear much fruit
(John 15:1-8).
One of the major themes of the Gospel of John is that we
must establish an intimate relationship with God and
abide in Him. When we do this, we find the true meaning
of our lives. When we try to exist outside of that
relationship, we find only frustration and loneliness. Jesus
is the way to the Father. He is the way and the truth and
the life. That is why Jesus uses the allegory of His being
the vine and we being the branches. He is the source of
our vitality (just as vines give life to the branches on the
vine). In Him we will bear fruit, but apart from Him we
cannot hope to flourish. This Gospel speaks extensively of
the relationship that the Sacrament of the Eucharist
establishes. This could also be said to be a Eucharistic
symbol, for it is the sacrament that celebrates the
communion between Jesus and ourselves, and also that
nourishes us so that we may be fruitful in God’s love.
• REFLECTION
Jesus the vine gives flower to some very different
branches. This week we consider Peter, next week let us
turn to Paul. No one would have suspected that Saul of
Tarsus, that “breather of murderous threats against the
disciples of the Lord,” would ever become known as “the
Apostle to the Gentiles” and one who would refer to
himself as both a loving father and mother to the
communities he himself tended. As Peter proved to be a
good shepherd of the flock, so Paul was a dedicated
worker in the vineyard, tending with such loving care the
branches growing from the One vine that is Jesus. What
we see in Paul and hear in his letters is the intimate love
of Christ for His Church. Take up any of his letters and
you will become engaged with the spirit of Paul as an
instrument that communicates the spirit of Christ. Paul’s
letters reveal the many voices he used to preach Christ
crucified: the evangelizer and herald, the teacher and
witness, the admonishing father and loving midwife, all
calling God’s children to be fully alive in Christ. Jesus
speaks of himself as a vine with many branches, befitting
not only the infinite variety of individuals he called in his
own day, but also the many peoples and nations that have
come to believe in Him. We pray for all who give
themselves over to the work of the vineyard, to all who
help others to remain in Christ and bear fruit. How do you
understand Jesus’ words about the branches needing to
be pruned so that they might bear more fruit?

situations based on work or custody reasons. Our attendance policy will be adjusted to serve these families
