Tenth Sunday In Ordinary Time ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY ST. ANTHONY CONFERENCE FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEKEND SECOND ENVELOPE COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND In the Gospel we see how Jesus was moved with pity and said to the widow, “Do not cry,” and the people knew that “God had visited his people.” When you hear the cries of the poor and reach out to help them, deep in their hearts the poor know that “God has visited them.” mercyRIDERS — Riding across America to benefit Mercy Housing ON JUNE 15, 2013, mercyRIDERS, a group of bicyclists and support team members, will give seven weeks of their time to ride from San Francisco to Washington, DC to raise awareness and support for Mercy Housing (www.mercyhousing.org), a non-profit run by the Women Religious that has served the poor and homeless for over 30 years. Mercy Housing’s mission is to create stable, vibrant and healthy communities by developing, financing and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for families, seniors and people with special needs who lack the economic resources to access quality, safe housing opportunities. Mercy Housing owns and operates over 17,000 housing units and provides financing for another 18,000 housing units in 42 states. I've been to their facilities; I've spoken to their residents. They make a huge impact. The mercyRIDERS are committed to doing our part by raising at least $60,000 to expand Mercy’s capacity to do even more. MY NAME IS EMIL MCCAULEY, a parishioner and member of the St Vincent de Paul Society, and one of six bicyclists that call ourselves mercyRIDERS. Our support team members include my wife Michelle and two youngest boys. The most joy I've had riding, apart from a few Ride the Rockies tours, has been my involvement in fundraising rides, including over fifteen MS fundraising rides. The mercyRIDERS goal is use the ride as a rallying point around which we draw attention to the great work that Mercy Housing does daily, and ultimately developing that attention into the long term relationships. While we're ambitious about raising funds, it's more important to me personally that people first understand what Mercy Housing does, how it's addressing the housing crisis, and how it helps keep a roof over people's heads. The rest, as they say, will follow. WITH THE HELP of our St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Anthony Parish has already been assisting Mercy Housing residents through its generous participation in the Christmas Giving Tree and the Easter Basket distribution. While there are opportunities to make contributions, I humbly ask that you pray for my safety and those that are part of mercyRIDERS. I am not riding to claim: "Look what I did." I am riding to declare: "Look what WE did!"
