2013 Catholic Ministries
Annual Appeal Pledge Report
WOW! We are at 105%
We have 620 donors
who have pledged $121,790
This year, the theme of the Appeal is “The Lord
Sustains His People.” God constantly gives to us. His
grace is ever present. His blessings are abundant. We
can demonstrate our gratitude to God and help build
the kingdom of God in our own parish and our own
diocese by making a generous gift to the CMAA.
In addition to helping those in need, theAppeal
funds the operations of the diocese and services that
are of great help to the ministries here in our parish.
If you have already made your pledge
or contribution, thank you.
The Daybreak
Shelter, in Joliet,
operates 24
hours a day, 365 days a year, and provides
emergency housing and supportive services to
individuals and families who are homeless.
“This is the largest homeless shelter in Will County
and the third largest in Illinois. We have the capacity
to house 120 people and serve on average 85
lunches a day. We’re seeing a lot of veterans and
many more who are chronically homeless.
“It’s very difficult work. What sustains me is my
faith. In this mission, I see every day that people are
renewed through what we do as God’s work. We
can’t do this alone. Government funding continues
to diminish. This is always a mission of collaboration.
I want to say thank you for collaborating with Daybreak
through the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal.”
TENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
LIVING
the
WORD
Sunday,
June 9, 2013
TODAY'S FOCUS:
GOD’S EYE IS ON THE WIDOW
God’s care reaches out to two heartbroken widows,
restoring to them a future that had suddenly
disappeared with the deaths of their sons. God’s ‘power
is at work through the word of the prophet Elijah; the
Father visits His people in the flesh in His son Jesus.
• FIRST READING
See! You son is alive (1 Kings 17:17-24)!
The widow had already seen the power of God working
through Elijah. Nevertheless, she fiercely challenges him
when her son dies. In Yiddish, this is called “chutzpah,” a
nerviness that will not accept “no” for an answer. Elijah’s
prayer to God is equally filled with “chutzpah” and
accuses Him of “killing” the widow’s son. This attitude
can be a reminder to us to pray with insistence and full
trust. God listens, giving the child life again.
• SECOND READING
God revealed His Son to me, so that I might proclaim Him
to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:11-19).
Jewish-Christian missionaries undercut Paul’s authority,
telling the Galatians that he was anti-Jewish and was not
even an apostle. In fact, Paul was called before his birth.
Far from rejecting Jewish ways, Paul was the fulfillment
of the promise of Jeremiah, prophet to the nations, for
Paul preached the Good News to the nations, the Gentiles.
While Paul does not specifically mention his encounter
with Jesus on the road to Damascus, his words are
consistent with what is said about that call in the Acts of
the Apostles. What is inconsistent is that Paul solemnly
Saint Anthony Catholic Church
swears that he had minimum contact with the Jerusalem
community, while Acts implies a more intimate
relationship. This emphasizes the fact that Paul’s call
came directly from God and not through the apostles.
• GOSPEL
Young man, I tell you, arise! (Luke 7:11-17)
The story of the widow of Nain is ultimately one in
which Jesus performs a miracle to show His compassion
for someone who is facing difficulties. This widow had
lost her only son. In ancient times, that was a disaster.
The only way that she could earn a living was to resort
to gleaning, gathering the wheat, grapes and olives that
the harvesters had left. This was, at best, a precarious
existence. By raising her young son from the dead, Jesus
was rescuing her from this fate. Jesus did not resurrect
the young man. He reanimated him. Resurrection means
rising from the dead with a new and glorious body that
would no longer suffer from death. Reanimation means
coming back to life, but only for the present. He would
die again sometime in the future.
• REFLECTION
Widows were not merry in the Bible. They were not
high on Israel’s scale of social importance. Nor on that
of other countries in biblical times. A widow was in
trouble if she did not have a son or another male in the
family to care for her. God’s compassion for widows
shines through here. There is no faith in evidence on
the part of either widow. Neither asks Elijah or Jesus
to do anything. If anything, the widow of Zarephath
blames the prophet for the death of her son: “Why
have you done this to me, O man of God?” This could be
the grief speaking or an assumption that a foreign
prophet’s presence attracted divine attention in some
punishing way. But the prophet’s prayer has God
restore the child’s life. Compassion for the widow
moves Jesus: “When the Lord saw her, He was moved
with pity for her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’” Jesus
does nothing more than speak to the young man,
“Young man, I tell you, arise!” And the dead man sits up,
speaking—a nice touch by Luke. The young man returns
to life speaking. What were his first words? One wonders
what God makes of our age, when the precarious
condition of widows in the past has become the ongoing
plight of so many women, young and old, across all
cultures in the world. How many see their children die
before them, the cost of diseases that could be averted,
even cured, or needless wars between genocidal factions?
SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR DIOCESAN PRIESTS’ CARE AND SUPPORT
NEXT WEEKEND, JUNE 15 AND 16. PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Father’s Day June 16, there will be a special collection to care for our infirm and retired
priests. The money raised from this collection will go to the fund which provides long term
care for our priests who need assisted living or skilled nursing care. Currently the diocese cares for
seven of our retired priests who need these services. While we were blessed to ordain five young
men to the priesthood on May 18, we have many more priests approaching retirement age. As such,
there is a need to strengthen the fund that will provide for their care should they not be able to care
for themselves. This collection should not be confused with the collection for the Retirement Fund
for Religious, which is taken in December and assists religious men and women who belong to
religious orders. That collection does not benefit or provide care for our retired diocesan priests.
As we celebrate this Year of Faith, prayerfully consider making a donation to help our
aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done to nourish your life
of faith through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the
active and retired priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous
support of the Father’s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured
of my prayers for you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
PRO-LIFE
REFLECTION
In their lawlessness,
bloodshed follows bloodshed.
—HOSEA 4:2
REFLECTION
If a mother has the right to choose to kill her innocent,
unwanted child, why doesn't the adult child have the right
to kill her innocent, unwanted mother? The “right to die”
movement has nothing to do with people wanting to die.
It has everything to do with people wanting to kill those
whom they believe would be better off dead.
PRAYER
Lord, I affirm today the primacy of life over choice.
May every choice be guided and guarded
by the immeasurable value of life.
CATECHISM CORNER
“The Church, whose mystery is being set forth
by this Sacred Synod, is believed to be
indefectibly holy. Indeed Christ, the Son of
God, who with the Father and the Spirit is
praised as ‘uniquely holy,’ loved the Church as
His bride, delivering Himself up for her. He did
this that He might sanctify her. He united her
to Himself as His own body and brought it to
perfection by the gift of the Holy Spirit for
God's glory. Therefore in the Church, everyone
whether belonging to the hierarchy, or being
cared for by it, is called to holiness.” (LG, 39)
JUNE 9
“From the beginning, this one Church has been
marked by a great diversity which comes from
both the variety of God’s gifts and the diversity
of those who receive them. Within the unity of
the People of God, a multiplicity of peoples
and cultures is gathered together. Among the
Church’s members, there are different gifts,
offices, conditions, and ways of life. ‘Holding a
rightful place in the communion of the Church
there are also particular Churches that retain
their own traditions.’ The great richness of such
diversity is not opposed to the Church’s unity. Yet
sin and the burden of its consequences
constantly threaten the gift of unity. And so the
Apostle has to exhort Christians to ‘maintain the
unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace’” (CCC, n. 814).
Tenth Sunday In Ordinary Time
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
ST. ANTHONY CONFERENCE
FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEKEND
SECOND ENVELOPE COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND
In the Gospel we see how Jesus was moved with pity
and said to the widow, “Do not cry,” and the people knew
that “God had visited his people.”
When you hear the cries of the poor and reach out to
help them, deep in their hearts the poor know that
“God has visited them.”
mercyRIDERS — Riding across
America to benefit Mercy Housing
ON JUNE 15, 2013, mercyRIDERS, a group of bicyclists
and support team members, will give seven weeks of their
time to ride from San Francisco to Washington, DC to
raise awareness and support for Mercy Housing
(www.mercyhousing.org), a non-profit run by the Women
Religious that has served the poor and homeless for over
30 years. Mercy Housing’s mission is to create stable,
vibrant and healthy communities by developing, financing
and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for
families, seniors and people with special needs who lack
the economic resources to access quality, safe housing
opportunities. Mercy Housing owns and operates over
17,000 housing units and provides financing for another
18,000 housing units in 42 states. I've been to their
facilities; I've spoken to their residents. They make a huge
impact. The mercyRIDERS are committed to doing our
part by raising at least $60,000 to expand Mercy’s
capacity to do even more.
MY NAME IS EMIL MCCAULEY, a parishioner and
member of the St Vincent de Paul Society, and one of six
bicyclists that call ourselves mercyRIDERS. Our support
team members include my wife Michelle and two
youngest boys. The most joy I've had riding, apart from a
few Ride the Rockies tours, has been my involvement in
fundraising rides, including over fifteen MS fundraising
rides. The mercyRIDERS goal is use the ride as a rallying
point around which we draw attention to the great work
that Mercy Housing does daily, and ultimately developing
that attention into the long term relationships. While
we're ambitious about raising funds, it's more important
to me personally that people first understand what Mercy
Housing does, how it's addressing the housing crisis, and
how it helps keep a roof over people's heads. The rest, as
they say, will follow.
WITH THE HELP of our St. Vincent de Paul Society,
St. Anthony Parish has already been assisting Mercy
Housing residents through its generous participation in
the Christmas Giving Tree and the Easter Basket
distribution. While there are opportunities to make
contributions, I humbly ask that you pray for my safety
and those that are part of mercyRIDERS.
I am not riding to claim: "Look what I did."
I am riding to declare: "Look what WE did!"
