September Parish Council Meeting
Five councillors, the County Councillors and one member of the public attended the
September Council meeting.
County members advised that the new bus schedule was still under review but that
funding was in place until next April, they also reported that CCC had allocated 90m to
the highway budget and that it was hoped that this would speed up pot hole repairs.
An application for a scoping opinion on land between Gt. Stukeley and the business
park was criticized as being premature, especially with the large scale development
plans for Alconbury Weald already submitted. On the subject of Alconbury Weald it was
agreed that it would be advantageous for the PC to stage two open meetings in the
villages to gauge public opinion on this large scale development prior to the PC
submitting their recommendations to the District Planning Authority, these meetings
would be on Monday 29 th October at 7.30pm at Lt. Stukeley village hall and on 31 st
October at 7.30pm at Gt. Stukeley village hall. Negotiations were still ongoing about the
diversion of a footpath at Grange Farm. Urban & Civic, members were informed, wanted
to formalize an agreement for the open space land and allotments in Owl End and that
they favoured some form of community involvement in the maintenance of, specifically
the 1.7 hectares of ‘green space’, they had agreed to put written proposals to
the Council at the next meeting. As it was thought that the ownership of Nook Farm
may have recently changed, Mrs. Parkin, who had recently visited Mr. Field, was to
contact the new occupants with regard to access to the land to maintain the tree belt
alongside Ermine Street.
A recent communication from SMYFC revealed that they would prefer to ‘rent’ the
playing field rather than ‘lease’, all other conditions were agreed, Mr. Hulstrom agreed to
speak with the club in an effort to thrash out a deal satisfactory to both sides. The
Council registered their pleasure in the progress already made by the club in ‘readying’
the area for competitive football.
It was reported that there was evidence of someone living in a mobile home on the
Grange Farm site, also that there was evidence of a car sales operation being
conducted from the same area.
Mrs. Parkin informed that a recent meeting with base authorities revealed that
contractors had now been issued with a warning that it was not acceptable to turn left
out of the newly formed base entrance/exit, it was agreed that the matter still required
monitoring.
The next Council meeting is on Monday 1 st October 2012 at 7.30pm at the village hall,
Low Road, Little Stukeley.
Alconbury Weald Update
With the Outline Application for the future development of Alconbury Weald submitted, and the statutory
consultation and discussions underway, the focus of work at the former airfield has very much shifted to
early delivery of the Enterprise Campus and the approved enabling works. This includes starting work on a
new entrance for Heavy Container Vehicles on the old A1, and after that the reconfiguration of the North
Gate to make it more suitable for bicycles, pedestrians and cars and more in keeping with the innovation,
quality and landscaping which will set the scene for Alconbury Enterprise Campus.
Tim Leathes, Project Manager for Urban&Civic, said:
“After two years of planning and discussions, it is great to get started with transforming the look and feel of
the site into its new focus on skilled jobs and low carbon innovation. We are also starting as we mean to go
on, by using two local companies for the work.”
The main delivery of the early infrastructure is being carried out by Jackson Civil Engineering, based in
Huntingdon. The work has also been supported by Peterborough-based Surveyors, CCM.
The early work on the HCV access is due to be completed by Christmas, and work will then start on
creating a Boulevard setting and delivering the first new building in the Enterprise Zone - the Incubator –
which will provide flexible space for start-up and small businesses to carry out research and development,
production and provide space for networking, meetings and business advice.
Tim added:
“We continue to work with local partners and meet with the local parish councils while the main application
for the site is consulted on and deliberated. We have copies of the application available in our offices on
site and are happy to answer any questions people have or meet to discuss the plans. We know there will
be a few more months as the District Council and partners work through the 6700 page application, and
we’ll keep people updated on progress in the meantime.”
GREAT STUKELEY TABLE TENNIS CLUB MAKE SUCCESS OF NEW TOURNAMENT
Great Stukeley Table Tennis Club decided to raise the profile of table tennis in this region by running
an open ranking tournament. This means that players from all over the country can enter and gain
ranking points depending on how well they do. It was also an opportunity for youngsters from our club
to try out against opponents from other regions and to be inspired by seeing some of the top
competitors play.
The Urban & Civic Hunts 2 Star Open took place in St. Ives on Saturday 1st September and attracted
a full house of entries in the 9-table venue The Burgess Hall. There was a very good prize fund of
£600 cash plus £200 of Topspin Sports vouchers across 7 events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles,
Mixed Banded Singles (excludes any men over 2750 points), Veterans, Junior Boys (under 18s),
Junior Girls and Mixed Cadets (under 15s).
Three of the club’s youngsters took part James Kelly (11), Abbie Stacey (12) and Matthew Pryke who
at 9 years old was the youngest competitor in the tournament. Abbie came third in the Junior Girls
which was played as a round robin. The boys did not get through the group stages but really enjoyed
their day of play. Amongst our adult members, Simon Pryke, Matthew’s father, made it through to the
quarter finals of the Veterans only to be knocked out by another club member Mirek Pazdzior. Mirek
was then dispatched by Steven Horsfield the number 3 seed.
All in all it was a successful tournament with Chris Doran the England No 6 from Northamptonshire
winning the Men’s Singles and Sussex player Kinga Oryl winning the Women’s Singles. A summary of
results can be found below.
If you would like to play table tennis just come along to one of our club sessions at Great Stukeley
HDC Press Release
You can now recycle your plastic pots, tubs and trays
In the UK, householders use around 1.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging every year,
and, until now, much of this ended up in landfill. Huntingdonshire District Council are
pleased to announce that everything from yogurt pots and margarine tubs to shampoo
and milk bottles can now be recycled as part of your kerbside collection.
Huntingdonshire residents are among some of the top recyclers in the country, with 57
per cent of our waste being sent for recycling. This is a great achievement and the
council really appreciates all the efforts residents make to sort their waste.
As well as further increasing the District Councils recycling rate, the introduction of
other types of plastics will be a welcomed addition to the recycling scheme. Accepting
more plastics will help to remove any uncertainty over which plastics can be recycled.
Below is a full list of which plastics can now collected as part of your recycling –
Plastics – YES please!
ü Plastic bottles of all types
ü Yoghurt pots
ü Margarine or spread tubs
ü Ice cream tubs
ü Trays from chocolate and biscuit boxes
ü Trays from meat, vegetables and fruit
ü Clean plant pots
ü Bottle tops, lids and triggers
ü Sandwich packets
ü Cream and custard pots
ü Soup pots
ü Instant Noodle pots
ü Tubs for dishwasher and laundry tablets
NO thanks
û Hard plastic items e.g. toys,
washing-up bowls, storage boxes
etc…
û Plastic film or wrapping
û Plastic bags or black sacks
û Expanded polystyrene
û Bubble wrap
û Food Waste
û Shredded paper
Top Tips for easy recycling of your plastics
· Place all the plastic packaging in the blue bin with your plastic bottles. Make
sure there are no plastic films, bags or black bags.
· Remember, you can include plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles from around the
house – not just the kitchen.
· Please rinse your containers out with used dishwater before recycling, to
prevent food contaminating the other materials.
Councilor Darren Tysoe, whose executive responsibilities include the Environment, said:
“We have been keen to expand our recycling service to include more plastics for some
time, as have our residents. We are very pleased that the markets for mixed plastics
have grown and enabled us to make this enhancement, and hope that they continue to
develop so that recycling a wide range of plastics becomes as commonplace as
recycling cans or paper”
that Jan should sign them.
for the Village Hall Autumn Bazaar hamper which is on Saturday 6 th October.
Members were reminded about the “Eel Catcher” fundraiser on Friday 9 th November and
that tickets can be purchased for £6. Alconbury WI are organising a Stratford Trip on 6 th
write a profile for the April 2013 edition which we need to start thinking about and are
due to make the display for the HQ foyer in April. The Big Walk Little Splash ends on 16 th
September and all walking/swimming diaries should be handed to Sheila who will meet
with Sarah to discuss how best to present it before sending it off. Various other notices
were read out and Sheila said that hats, gloves and scarves are needed for Nepal and
toothbrushes.
Mrs Jackie Daniels was introduced as speaker for the evening and gave us a lively and
amusing talk on The Journey of a Lifetime which was her trip on the Orient Express for her
Silver Wedding Anniversary in May 1994, illustrated by a map, various books and
memorabilia. Doris Sadler gave the vote of thanks. Mrs Daniels then judged the
competition “A Journey you would like to make” 1 st prize: Jan Sly 2 nd prize: Joan Gray 3 rd
prize: Margaret Helme. The draw prize was won by Kath Simpson. Roll call: your lifetime
ambition yet to be achieved.
7 .30pm. Members had a discussion as to who would be responsible for which jobs on the
night and a list was drawn up for this and to confirm who had volunteered to make which
refreshments. The speaker is from East Anglia Children’s Hospice and the entertainment is
to be provided by St Barts Readers and Singers. Competition: bring: royal memorabilia
make: a handmade child’s toy.
The next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday 10 th October 2012 at 7 .30pm. The
speaker will be Mr David Wilkins from Water Aid, rather than the British Red Cross as the
speaker had let us down. Competition: Anything Red. Roll Call: which bones have you
broken.
Hedges and Footpaths
Complaints have again been received in both parishes in respect of hedges
adjacent to the footpaths being overgrown, it is the responsibility of owners
to keep them cut back, if possible clear of the footpath and the council
would appreciate the co-operation of all parishioners in this. If through
disability you are unable to comply then please let me know and I will try
to do something about it.
Community Wood
As many of you are aware the Parish Council in conjunction with Urban &
Civic are proposing to plant a Community Wood in Owl End towards
Prestley Wood. It is hoped to commence planting in the Autumn so that it
will be started in the Queens Jubilee year. Volunteers will be required to
assist and in order to assess the support I can expect, if you are
interested in helping can you please let me know. I realise that without
specific dates you cannot commit yourselves, but the knowledge that you
may help if available will be invaluable to me.
Thursford’s Christmas Spectacular 2012 on Sunday 18 th November 2012
October is a hectic time at Thursford when cast members arrive and rehearsals and costume
fittings begin and lighting and sound programmes established.
The huge transformation of the main hall from museum with just 300 seats for summer concerts to
a 1500 seat plus auditorium begins with a team of 23 people.
The steam engines have to be moved and the Christmas decorations, lights and sound
equipment are put up ready for the family video which is shot in October for projection during the
show.
The arrival of the performers is a big boost to the local economy particularly Fakenham and Holt
as the performers stay in local accommodation and use facilities like bowling, the cinema,
restaurants and shops. Arriving in October and leaving in late December means that the
performers do most of their Christmas shopping locally.
Each Christmas season Thursford hosts well over 104,000 people to their wonderful Spectacular.
We are all getting very excited about this year’s show which will take place on Sunday 18 th
November 2012 at 2pm.
We will be departing from the Great Stukeley Village Hall Car Park on that day PROMPTLY at
10am.So, PLEASE BE ON TIME!.
Flying High on the London Eye with Christmas Cruise & Shopping:
Tuesday 4 th December 2012
The Christmas Cruise is great fun. While many have been lucky enough to cruise on the river by
day it is a truly different experience after dark.
Everyone is simply enchanted by the sheer beauty of the mighty Thames by night. A thrill ripples
through the boat as we pass beneath a floodlit Tower Bridge and we hear Christmas Carols
played when we board and step ashore from our privately chartered cruiser.
Aboard the London Rose it will be warm and cozy with really terrific views. There is a fully
licensed bar which also sells hot drinks and snacks for the duration of our 90 minute cruise.
There are proper flush toilets and plenty of seating in the warm and lots of room to move around
inside the cabin and out on the really huge open deck.
The commentary, which is an enjoyable part of our programme, will point out a mix of historical
information with Cockney Waterman’s humour. The Campion family have been involved with these
tours for over 20 years. They have worked on the river for generations and are one of the very few
London families who still operate their very own boats on the Thames.
On the day of this simply fantastic trip we will be departing from the Great Stukeley Village Hall at
12 noon PROMPT to meet up with our London Representative at the 02(Old Millennium Dome) at
3.15pm.Our much looked forward to cruise will depart at 4pm with commentary from our Skipper
Craig Campion.
After the cruise we can look forward to flying high for 30 minutes on the London Eye followed by
Christmas shopping at this year’s Cologne Christ Markt.
REFLECTIONS on my Royal London Tour
Tuesday 11 th September 2012
At 5.15am it was raining heavily-not a promising start to our visit to
ROYAL LONDON and on to Buckingham Palace and viewing the Queen’s
Diamond Exhibition.
However, by the time our coach left Great Stukeley Village Hall at
7.40am the rain had disappeared and sunshine had taken over
which lasted for the rest of our day in London.
Our well informed Blue Badge Holder Guide, Jeanie Carmichael, joined us
as we approached St. Paul’s Cathedral where we stopped for our coffee
break. Jeanie’s knowledge of ROYAL LONDON was fantastic. Thanks to
her we learned much about our incredible capital-its buildings, monuments
and our Royal Family-modern and ancient.
We stopped for lunch at Parliament Square before making our
2.30pm appointment at Buckingham Palace to go through the
airport-style security check. Nineteen state rooms were open for
our visit including the Throne Room where the Prince of
Wales and Princess Diana’s Wedding photographs were taken in
1981. More recently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's
Wedding pictures were taken in the Throne Room in April 2011.
The Queen’s Diamond Exhibition was incredible. It was a once in a
lifetime event with much of this superb jewellery never before displayed.
My favourite, and hers, was Queen Victoria’s small, light 1870 crown
encrusted with 1,187 diamonds.
There was an element of drama during our afternoon visit as one of our
group hurt himself badly needing to be rushed off, with his wife and our
guide, to the hospital by ambulance for stitches. They finally arrived back at
Huntingdon just after 9pm by train. I found a wallet, complete with credit
cards and money, on the ground at the café and handed it in to the
manager who assured me that it would be reunited with its owner.
One woman, not in our party, was carted off for taking illegal pictures. I
wonder if they still behead people who mess with the Queen.
Even with all the unwanted excitement everyone had a really wonderful
day. Thank you all for your many, greatly appreciated, phone calls and
letters of thanks.
A big thank you is owed to Jeanie Carmichael who really knows her stuff.
Christine Hoodith, also from my tour company, kept me informed about
developments at the hospital and to Peter Brown, our fun and very
cheerful coach driver, who did a superb job of getting us to and from
London safely and on time.
CABLE CAR CAPITAL TRIP: Tuesday 12 th March 2013
I am very busy organizing a wonderful new trip for 2013 which I know will be very popular with
everyone.
The CABLE CAR TRIP is planned for Tuesday 12 th March 2013.
Our departure from Great Stukeley Village Hall for London will be at 08.00am giving us time to
arrive for a delicious brunch on a boat at 11.15am.
In the early afternoon and again in the early evening we will take our rides on the Emirates Air
Line (Thames Cable Car). Our first ride will be in daylight and our second ride at dusk. Time will
also allow a sight-seeing coach trip.
The price of this exceptional trip will be: £ 39.00 per person which I have had to work hard at to
get a good price.
Our tour will include:
· The coach journey to and from London and a drivers tip
· The Luxury of a Blue Badge Holder guide for the whole day plus his or her tip
· A great Brunch on board the Tereza Joanne
· Two flights on the Thames Cable Car
· An extensive sight-seeing tour where our guide will point out places of interest
We are planning to arrive back in Great Stukeley around 9.45pm depending on the traffic out of
London.
If this days’ trip is of interest please call me without delay as I know that this will be a popular
event.
PLEASE BE AWARE that my trips fill up quickly. It is strictly first come/first served. So please call
me very soon to avoid any disappointment.
The Stukeleys’ Heritage Group Meeting
Please note change of date.
Our next meeting was to be in October, but there are so many meetings
arranged around that time in connection with the Alconbury Weald development
proposals that I have had to cancel our meeting which would have been 17 th
October.
The next meeting will therefore be:
Wednesday 21 st NOVEMBER at 7.30pm in Great Stukeley Village Hall,
when local author Margaret Faulkner will remind us of the hardships endured
under rationing from 1940 right through to 1954.
Archaeological Field Walking Morning
The Stukeleys Heritage Group invites everyone in our villages to take
part in discovering what our ancestors left behind!
We are going to do some field walking to look for finds uncovered by
ploughing on the proposed allotments site at the top of Owl End.
Meet in the car park of Great Stukeley Village Hall for a briefing at:
10.00 am on Saturday 3rd November
Afterwards we will walk to the site. Bring suitable footwear and some
bags for finds. We will have an archaeological expert on hand to help us
identify finds. Metal detectors are also OK if you have one and wish to
use it.
No need to book, just turn up!
Grateful thanks to Urban&Civic for allowing this to take place on their
land and especially to Rebecca Britton for all her help in setting it up.
Penny and I wish to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers for her.
Penny has had the surgery to deal with the hernia she has been suffering from
over a long time, but now at last it’s over with. We are looking forward to getting
away for 2 weeks in Devon at the end of this month. We love to go down there
at this time of the year, for me it is the most beautiful time of the year as the
trees and bushes turn their leaves to the Golden shades of brown as autumn
heralds the Dark nights of winter, We then look forward to the green shoots that
come with the dawn of spring bringing the new life to flowers and trees again.
This always draws a picture in my mind of the death and the resurrection of the
Lord Jesus Christ bringing new life to those that chose to follow Him. This picture
helps me to understand what Jesus meant when he said we must be born again.
I think this cycle of life and death followed by new life reflects the seasons of
the year bringing new life to all that wish to make that step of faith.
We will be welcoming the visit of the possible replacements for Pastor Paul and
Jepye and they will spend two weeks here at the start of November to view the
situation, and for us to get to know them. We hope that they are the right ones to
lead us forward.
