Thursford’s Christmas Spectacular 2012 on Sunday 18 th November 2012 October is a hectic time at Thursford when cast members arrive and rehearsals and costume fittings begin and lighting and sound programmes established. The huge transformation of the main hall from museum with just 300 seats for summer concerts to a 1500 seat plus auditorium begins with a team of 23 people. The steam engines have to be moved and the Christmas decorations, lights and sound equipment are put up ready for the family video which is shot in October for projection during the show. The arrival of the performers is a big boost to the local economy particularly Fakenham and Holt as the performers stay in local accommodation and use facilities like bowling, the cinema, restaurants and shops. Arriving in October and leaving in late December means that the performers do most of their Christmas shopping locally. Each Christmas season Thursford hosts well over 104,000 people to their wonderful Spectacular. We are all getting very excited about this year’s show which will take place on Sunday 18 th November 2012 at 2pm. We will be departing from the Great Stukeley Village Hall Car Park on that day PROMPTLY at 10am.So, PLEASE BE ON TIME!. Flying High on the London Eye with Christmas Cruise & Shopping: Tuesday 4 th December 2012 The Christmas Cruise is great fun. While many have been lucky enough to cruise on the river by day it is a truly different experience after dark. Everyone is simply enchanted by the sheer beauty of the mighty Thames by night. A thrill ripples through the boat as we pass beneath a floodlit Tower Bridge and we hear Christmas Carols played when we board and step ashore from our privately chartered cruiser. Aboard the London Rose it will be warm and cozy with really terrific views. There is a fully licensed bar which also sells hot drinks and snacks for the duration of our 90 minute cruise. There are proper flush toilets and plenty of seating in the warm and lots of room to move around inside the cabin and out on the really huge open deck. The commentary,which is an enjoyable part of our programme,will point out a mix of historical information with Cockney Waterman’s humour.The Campion family have been involved with these tours for over 20 years. They have worked on the river for generations and are one of the very few London families who still operate their very own boats on the Thames. On the day of this simply fantastic trip we will be departing from the Great Stukeley Village Hall at 12 noon PROMPT to meet up with our London Representative at the 02(Old Millennium Dome) at 3.15pm.Our much looked forward to cruise will depart at 4pm with commentary from our Skipper Craig Campion. REFLECTIONS on my Royal London Tour Tuesday 11 th September 2012 At 5.15am it was raining heavily-not a promising start to our visit to ROYAL LONDON and on to Buckingham Palace and viewing the Queen’s Diamond Exhibition. However, by the time our coach left Great Stukeley Village Hall at 7.40am the rain had disappeared and sunshine had taken over which lasted for the rest of our day in London. Our well informed Blue Badge Holder Guide, Jeanie Carmichael, joined us as we approached St. Paul’s Cathedral where we stopped for our coffee break. Jeanie’s knowledge of ROYAL LONDON was fantastic. Thanks to her we learned much about our incredible capital-its buildings, monuments and our Royal Family-modern and ancient. We stopped for lunch at Parliament Square before making our 2.30pm appointment at Buckingham Palace to go through the airport-style security check. Nineteen state rooms were open for our visit including the Throne Room where the Prince of Wales and Princess Diana’s Wedding photographs were taken in 1981. More recently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's Wedding pictures were taken in the Throne Room in April 2011. The Queen’s Diamond Exhibition was incredible. It was a once in a lifetime event with much of this superb jewellery never before displayed. My favourite, and hers, was Queen Victoria’s small, light 1870 crown encrusted with 1,187 diamonds. There was an element of drama during our afternoon visit as one of our group hurt himself badly needing to be rushed off, with his wife and our guide, to the hospital by ambulance for stitches. They finally arrived back at Huntingdon just after 9pm by train. I found a wallet, complete with credit cards and money, on the ground at the café and handed it in to the manager who assured me that it would be reunited with its owner. One woman, not in our party, was carted off for taking illegal pictures. I wonder if they still behead people who mess with the Queen. Even with all the unwanted excitement everyone had a really wonderful day. Thank you all for your many, greatly appreciated, phone calls and letters of thanks. A big thank you is owed to Jeanie Carmichael who really knows her stuff. Christine Hoodith,also from my tour company, kept me informed about developments at the hospital and to Peter Brown, our fun and very cheerful coach driver, who did a superb job of getting us to and from London safely and on time.
