Intel's MSA delivers open system interrace and protoml standards that bulld-on and extend the basic MULTIBUS II (IEEE/ANSI 1296) bus standard. The MSA speclOcations deline diagnostics mntrollbullt·ln self test, system initialization and boot loading, board mnllguration, and messege passing. The user benellts from MSA because the level or vendorl board compatibility has been raised above basic electrical bus specifications to a set of )lIlMlrful programmatic Interfaces that "hide" the bus specifics with software. This provides OEMs quicker time to market with faster system Integration and shorter design cycles. £.tSt' I/SBII. EXP.4NSION .4lfD .. ~" St'SI'EIfIS The MULTIBUS II System ArchlllX:ture Is used as the foundation for Integrating Intel's full line or Single Board Computer (ISsce) modules and IRMX II system software into the System 520, The "recomposabllity" or the System 520 means that OEMs have the option to buy·the contents or the system (I.e. the boards, the firmware, the software, etc.) separalAlly, and "recompose" all or part or the system's pieces into a different mnnguration or enclosure. The System Is available Initially in t\\U basic hardware mnflguratlons (See Table 1). As hardware only platforms, they may be purchased without the IRMX II Operating Sys&em by ORMs requiring a MULTIBUS II System 520 to host their own operating system software. Easy user expansion and recomposability or tbe System 520 is supported by a line or "SySlAlm InlAlgration Toolkits" (SIT kits) that mntain ail the firmware necessary to allow standard, oI!'·the-sbelf MULTIBUS II boards.to integrate cleanly into the System 520. With these toolkit products, tbe OEM can purchase the pieces needed and profit from greater ease of use, ease or integration, and leveraging higher levels or open standards. .4 NEI'WOIlIi IN TilE St'STEM Using the MULTIBUS II backplane as an ultra.fast network (40MByteSIscc), multiple peer-to-peer 386 m·based iRMX application processors operate as Independent "net\\Urked" iRMX systems over the MULTIBUS II Parallel System Bus (PSB). Each IRMX application processor running Intel's OpenNE'I"" net\\Urk software will provide transparent distributed file sharing, file transfer, and virtual terminal capability among all application processors on the backplane, and IEEE 802.3·based (1.25MBytesIsec) OpenNET networked system nodes (See Figure 1). Using the PSS as a network makes the System 520 a high performance "minicomputer" cluster condensed into one multiprocessor system. The major advantage to the OEM is total network extensibility Inside and outside the system, using the same OpenNET software. The key benefits are: reduced cost through the "replacement" or multiple uni·processor net\\Urked systems and servers, draStically reduced physical space requirements, Increased overall netWork throughput and performance, and preserved software Investment. The graphics subsystem and Its companion software use the unique hardware windowing feature of the 82786 display processor to provide a windowed virtual terminal console with graphics capabilities. With its on· board processing power and its large graphiCs memory buffer, the ISBX 279 off·loads the application processors or the display processing tasks.
