all about careers Higher Education in South Africa 10 A snapshot According to Study South Africa, there are more than 750 000 students at public universities across the country. Since 1994, the number of students attending universities has almost doubled, with one in 6 young South Africans entering Higher Education. This is largely attributed to the fact that the country’s Higher Education system has in the last 14 years been transformed into an educational system that is accessible to all South Africans, irrespective of racial, social or economic background – and one which aims to deliver on the skills needs of our developing economy. These changes have also translated into a diverse tertiary education system, and South Africa is fast becoming Africa’s academic destination of choice, in the provision of high quality tertiary education that is on par with the demands of a rapidly globalising, competitive and information-driven world. Higher Education Institutions Universities South Africa has 11 universities. These are traditional universities, with a large number of postgraduate students. The education is mostly theoretical, with a strong emphasis based on research. Universities of Technology There are 6 Universities of Technology in the country, which are oriented towards professional qualifications with a large focus on practical training. It entails some postgraduate and research capacity. Comprehensive Universities A new institution resulting from the merger of Universities and Tech- nikons, comprehensive universities offers learners both theoretical and practical training. FET College Further Education and Training (FET) has become a top national priority, aimed at enhancing vocational training so that the skills needs of our growing economy are met. Training provided at FET colleges are also aimed at the development of skills linked work experience, and includes both theory and practical training. Technical College Professional education institutions offering learners practical training that will culminate in a nationally recognised qualification. Private Registered Institutions Private registered institutions offer students a more flexible approach to achieving a professional qualification, including degrees, diplomas and certificates. Privately registered institutions must be registered with the Higher Education and Quality Committee, UMALU- SI or the relevant Sector Education and Training Authority. Distance Learning Institution Distance Learning through correspondence makes it possible to study at your own time and pace, or whilst working. Recognised Qualifications Ensure that the institution you choose through which to pursue your qualification – be it university, university of technology, or private registered institution – is accredited and offers recognised qualifications. Degrees Three or more years (depending on the nature of the course) of largely theoretical training. These are referred to as undergraduate degrees and may be followed by postgraduate qualifications
such as Honours, Masters or Doctorate degrees, which take a minimum of one year each to complete. Most universities in South Africa require a matric exemption for admission. Subject and symbol requirements per course vary. National Diploma Three-year qualifi cations offered by universities of technology and certain, which offers both theoretical and practical training. After obtaining a National Diploma, learners may then enrol for a BTech degree. A matric certifi cate is required for admission into university of technology.
