THE EARLY YEARS
Edson was born of the railway, during the height of
transcontinental rail construction heading toward BC.
The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP) was ferrying
hundreds of railway workers west and, initially, it
looked as if Wolf Creek would be the established
divisional point. However, Wolf Creek fell victim to real
estate speculators and the GTP refused to pay the
overinflated prices. Instead, they moved the divisional
point eight miles west, to the home of modern day
Edson.
Edson received its first passenger train on August
10,1910 and in 1911, the people of Edson placed a
request to the Post Master General to have the post
office renamed from Heatherwood — a name it had
carried for about a year — to Edson, in honour of Edson
J. Chamberlain, the then general manager of the
Grand Trunk Pacific Rail.
On September 21, 1911, Edson was officially
incorporated as a town and by 1912, the population
had nearly tripled to a staggering 1,233 people and 32
local businesses.
In the spring of 1913, a fire claimed the wholesale
liquor store building and another fire consumed the
Old Edson Hall. It was a night of destruction that
demolished much of Edson’s ‘red light’ district. That fire
and a later riot would prompt the hiring of the Royal
North West Mounted Police to patrol the streets and
bring order back to the community.
With law and order in place, families came to settle
the area, encouraged that they would be safe and
protected from the lawlessness following the rail
construction.
By 1920, the town had power, water, sewer systems
and a telephone switch board. Soon, there was a
dentist, long distance service and improvements made
to the postal service, along with better roadways
in and out of Edson. These economic foundations
stayed strong throughout Edson’s history and were
augmented by an extended forestry industry, trap lines,
oil and gas development, coal developments to the
south, and dynamic small businesses
that continue to flourish in Edson.
For all its prosperity, however, Edson also became
a hotbed for unlawful activities that followed many
frontier towns.
RED BRICK
ARTS CENTRE
Keep Edson in business
by keeping your business in Edson!
Serving Edson and area since 1913
As one of Edson’s oldest buildings, the Red Brick
Arts Centre and Museum is a must see!
Built in 1913, the Red Brick was
one of Edson’s first schools
and continued to serve the
children of Edson until 1967
when it was closed down. It
then become a bus barn for
the school division but when
a new facility was opened
in the 80s, the future of the
Red Brick was uncertain.
A campaign to save the
building started in 1985
and succeeded when the
building was designated
a municipal historical
resource in 1987.
102 years after opening
its doors, the Red Brick
has become the town’s
cultural cornerstone,
complete with an
art gallery, 141 seat
theatre, dance studios,
permanent art
collection and a
classroom museum.
EDSON AREA ATVING
The Edson ATV Club is a family orientated, not for profit group that promotes safe, fun and
responsible riding on the vast trails in the area. The trails in the area span a wide range of terrains
that can please the novice rider to someone with an advanced skill set.
The club operates with a volunteer workforce for trail maintenance and funds
from memberships, local donations and fund raising events.
There are several areas that offer opportunities for day rides or
longer duration stays.
The Swanson area is only 20 km west on Highway 16 and offers diverse riding
conditions; there is access across the Sundance Provincial Park via the freshly
completed Ruperts Crossing which has opened up many more trails for use.
Another area that the Edson ATV Club stewards is the South Esk trail, located approximately 120 km
South of Edson and can be staged from Grave Flats.
As always, the Edson ATV Club would encourage you to support the clubs where you ride, treat our trails
with respect, pack out what you pack in and most of all have fun while being safe.
PARKS IN THE YELLOWHEAD
Sundance Provincial Park
Sundance Provincial Park is comprised of three very different and unique features only found within the park’s
boundaries. It was declared a park under the Special Places Program.
Emerson Lakes is a grouping of 5 beautifully clear lakes nestled in a quiet oasis. Seven km of hiking trails circle
three of the lakes and offer amazing scenic views.
The lakes provide excellent fishing for brook trout and a range of other fish.
Marl Bog is a provincially significant site for flora. Twelve different species of orchids, as well as 5 different species
of carnivorous plants can be found here along with a variety of rare aquatic plants, sedges, rushes and ferns.
This area has a unique combination of soil and hydrology which provide for such an unusual grouping of
plants.
Wild Sculpture Trail
This trail takes a journey through the ever changing hoodoos of
Sundance Park.
The sandstone cliffs, which were and are carved by rain and wind,
hang on the side of steep cliffs overlooking the lakes below.
The trail is about 9 km in length one way and provides camping spots
for overnight adventures within the park.
PARKS IN THE YELLOWHEAD
Shining Bank
Shining Bank offers a wide variety of family camping activities within a quiet aspen grove. A roped off swimming
area, playground facilities, a sandy beach and excellent boat launching and docking facilities give great
access and use to the area’s largest lake.
24 km N of Peers on Highway 32
Bear Lake Park
Bear Lake Park remains one of the area’s most popular lakes. The sandy beach, clean water, and playground
are a draw for the younger members of the family while the boat launch and docking areas play host to the
more adventuresome water enthusiasts for water skiing and tubing.
35 km NE of Edson on Highway 748
Obed Lake Provincial Park
Obed Lake Provincial Park encompasses 3 small
lakes and the upland areas around them. The area
contains a diverse mix of wetland and well drained
upland communities including black spruce,
tamarack, ferns, mixed wood forests, and closed
conifer forests of lodgepole pine and black spruce.
The area is important for wildlife as well, especially
for elk and as an over wintering area for moose.
UNIQUE SITES
Brule Sand Dunes
These three storey sand dunes are fun places to hike, bike or
quad. In the 1900s the Grand Trunk Pacific railway ran across
the dunes hoping to connect the Rockies to Edmonton.
Drifting sand over the tracks caused this section of the
railway to be shut down and remains of some of the tracks
are still visible today. W of Hinton off Highway 16
Ogre Canyon
The canyon and the sinkholes within it were carved out
by streams and underground water. The climb to the
top is a difficult one, rising up almost 900 metres along
switchbacks. Four wheel drive is recommended on the
gravel road to get to the parking lot. NW of Hinton near
Brule
Coal Branch Railway
The Coal Branch Railway is now a chain of abandoned
mining towns along the eastern slopes of the central
Canadian Rocky Mountains and was once an
important part of Alberta’s coal industry. Once
the Branch was famous for its guarantee of work
and overall prosperity, however, technological
advancement outdated the collieries and many of the
once prosperous towns are now abandoned. The railway was a link
from Bickerdike (seven miles west of Edson) to the coal mining towns
of the Rockies. S off Highway 16 onto Highway 40
UNIQUE SITES
Rosevear Ferry
The Rosevear Ferry has been in operation for over seventy years
and is one of only seven ferries remaining in Alberta today. To
access the ferry go north off Highway 16 on Range Road 154, also
known as the Rosevear Road.
Mountain Park
Mountain Park used to be a thriving village of more than 1,000 people
but now is a ghost town. No more remains of the town but faint traces
of buildings and a cemetery that is taken care of by previous residents
of the town.
Cardinal Divide
The Cardinal Divide is an elevation of land that separates the Arctic Drainage from drainage to Hudson’s
wildflowers in the area, providing for a truly pleasurable alpine view.
WILLMORE PARK
You’ll find a piece of a different world at Willmore Park.
As one of Edson’s best kept secrets, Willmore Park will certainly
impress. Located right along the McLeod River, the park offers
something for everyone.
Hiking and biking trails, ranging from 1.5 km to 5 km provide
varying degrees of difficulty and are surrounded by the beauty
of the wilderness and scenic views of the river valley. It is also a
great place for runners of all levels.
There is plenty of room to camp in one of the 12 river side sites or
29 forest sites. Group camping and picnicking is also available.
The area is also a great fishing destination.
The park is used for tobogganing, snow shoeing and cross
country skiing in the winter months and in the summer, it is a
popular spot for swimming, hiking, running,
soaking up the sun or tubing on the river.
Willmore Park is a definite must see with its
calm, small town charm with grand views
INDUSTRY
Coal
Mining has been a key player in the Edson area for many years, but
when oil became the fuel of choice, coal mining started to decline.
Mines gradually shut down in the 1950s and the industry slowed
dramatically until the late 1970s when coal became a viable product
again.
Oil & Gas
Edson is located on one of the largest gas fields in Alberta
and there are always employment opportunities in this field.
Exploration, drilling, collection, transportation and servicing of
the oil and gas industry continues to be a driving force and
major contributor to Edson’s economic prosperity.
Forestry
In 1983, an OSB manufacturing plant opened in
the Edson area — Pelican Spruce Mills (now
Weyerhaeuser). Weyerhaeuser uses the
abundant supply of Aspen and Black Poplar
to manufacture structural panels used for
flooring and sheltering in residential home
construction. In the early 1990s a second
mill, Sundance Forest Industries (formerly
Erith Tie Company) built a new stateof-the-art
sawmill which soon
expanded. The mill is now known as
Edson Forest Products, a division
of West Fraser.
