What amazing progress! We’ve
come such a long way in our short
nine month mark of establishment.
It has been incredible to watch it
grow and become so successful.
Our editorials are becoming better
by the minute! I want to thank
you all so much for supporting
our magazine. We could not do it
without you, and we are more than
honored to publish each and every
photographer in this book.
In this issue, we were granted the
opportunity to interview Norbert
Kniat, who is one of the world’s
top 200 advertising photographers.
In addition, Norbert has
also photographed exclusively for
our double cover Body Issue! I
am very excited to share this issue
with you all, and I hope it inspires
you as much as it has inspired me.
Once again, we thank you for every
ounce of support that is given!
“Since 2011, he has been CONSIDERED one of the Top
200 advertising photographers worldwide.”
RENOWNED INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
NORBERT
KNIAT
THE BEST IMAGES ARE THE ONES THAT RETAIN THEIR STRENGTH AND IMPACT OVER
THE YEARS, REGARDLESS OF THE NUMBER OF TIMES THEY ARE VIEWED.”
-ANNE GEDDES
XM: First off, can you tell us about yourself, and how you
got started in photography?
NK: I am a forty two year old German photographer. I
started photography years ago, first as a studio assistant
then later as a freelance assistant for international photographers.
XM:What was your inspiration for starting? How long has
it been since you’ve started?
NK: My inspiration was the possibility to get the exact moment
on printed paper. The moment when a person shows
me her soul, or when a movement has the perfect flow,
or when a light has the perfect reflection; that’s what I’m
looking for...that’s what I wanted to see on a picture, and
that’s what I’m still trying to show.
XM: When did you realize that you had it in you?
NK: When I first locked myself in my darkroom, spending
all night printing my first images.
XM: How do you prepare for a photo shoot?
NK: It depends on the job I am doing. If it’s a fashion
production, I research moods, old styles, movies, and old
magazines.
XM: What distinguishes a good photograph from a bad
one?
NK: Understanding of quality. Mostly photographers who
first shot and learned on analog cameras have a better and
more precise understanding about light and exposures.
XM: Do you have any upcoming projects that’ll soon be
released?
NK: I completed a campaign for a big make up brand,
which will come out all over Europe and in Capetown. I
shot a major campaign for a German brand coming out in
July.
XM: Can you list some of the clients you’ve shot for?
NK: Just to name a few, I’ve shot for: Vogue Spain, Elle
Brasil, Harpers Bazaar Japan, Vogue India, Harpers Bazaar
India, GQ India, Elle India, Cosmopolitan India, Cosmopolitan
Germany, and many more.
I’ve also done advertising campaigns for Lynx/Axe, Dove
Russia, Gillette UK, Audi, Swarovski, and the list goes on
and on.
XM: Is there an inspirational quote that sums up your
work?
NK: “The best images are the ones that retain their
strength and impact over the years, regardless of the number
of times they are viewed.” Anne Geddes
XM: How would you describe your style of photography?
Consider anything and everything from color to historical
eras and more.
NK: My photography always, no matter if it’s fashion,
beauty, or portrait, shows atmosphere through colors or
perfect scenery.
A good picture is just a picture when you can feel the atmosphere.
No matter what’s on it, you need to feel something
watching it.
XM: Out of all the images you’ve made so far in your career,
which is your favorite and why?
NK: It’s a campaign image I did for an Argentinian fashion
client called Bendito Pie. I shot the whole campaign in the
Holy City of Varanasi, India; one blond, European model,
in the middle of thousands of people. It was the most
improvised and spontaneous shooting I ever had, and the
most fun at the same time. The output was just stunning,
and the behind the scene pictures and stories were unforgettable.
XM: What is fun and rewarding about photography?
NK: Traveling around the globe.
XM: When was the very first time you photographed for a
major brand/publication throughout your career? Explain
the exact excitement and feels you experienced at that moment.
NK: The very first time I shot for a major brand, even
though it was just for a national advert in Austria, was actually
6 months after I opened my studio. I shot everything
analog in this time, and I wanted to be 100% sure what I
was doing. So, I did tons of film and light tests before the
shooting day and was super excited. But, the moment I
took my camera in my hand on the day of shooting, I was
calm and
focused because I tested and prepared myself so well, that
nothing could go wrong.
XM: How has photography changed other aspects of your
life?
NK: It has changed my whole life...everything.

XM: Before we begin, tell us a little bit about
your background and where you’re from.
AM: I am 21 years old and was born in
Arlington, Virginia. My father is French
and my mother is Colombian. I lived in
France for six years since the age of one,
and moved to my hometown in Quincy,
Michigan at the age of six. I resided
there for ten years, and finally
decided to move to Florida when I
was 16.
XM: What are your favorite foods?
AM: I have many favorite dishes, but my
diet only allows me to have certain types
of meals, which include high protein,
moderate carbs, and moderate fat. On
my “cheat” days I like to go all out and
have my favorite snacks, meals, and lots
of carbs such as: Oreos, ice cream, pizza,
rice, and that is just to name a few.
XM: Any favorite hobbies?
AM: I play basketball and tennis recreationally.
Aside from sports, I love weight training
and anything health/fitness related, watching
movies, reading, going to the beach, and occasionally
fishing.
XM: What’s your background in modeling?
When and why did you get started? What led
you to apply for this
job?
AM: I started modeling about a year ago, but I
had a stint in modeling as a child in France. I
have always enjoyed being in front of a camera
and having my photo taken. The money and
glamour is nice, but it’s just a bonus. Even
though it demands a lot of hard work, time,
discipline, and dedication, I truly enjoy what
I am doing, and I am passionate about it. It’s
not so much work as it is play!
XM: What are your goals as a model? How
do you see yourself progress in this field?
What do you hope to accomplish at the
peak of your modeling career?
AM: As a model I plan on traveling to
other countries to participate in runways,
photo shoots, campaigns, etc.
Progress in this field consists of continuing
to grow as a model, and on
a personal level each and every day,
and making minor improvements
over the course of this journey. At
the peak of my modeling career, I
plan on making a smooth transition
into acting, not that I
wouldn’t want to continue
modeling after that of
course.
XM: What is your nutrition like and how
often do you workout? What is your availability
for traveling? Are you
full-time or part time?
AM: My nutrition is as meticulous as ever
because I’m focused in maintaining a center
body weight/composition to be presented
more as a high-end fashion model rather
than a fitness model. I was previously on
a ketogenic (very low to no carb) diet, and
recently switched to a cyclical carb diet and
constantly monitoring my caloric intake. I
workout two times a day during the week,
and only a single time on the weekend, typically
taking one day off unless I solely do
cardio that day. I do cardio Monday through
Friday in the mornings, along with abs,
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
After my morning sessions, I eat
breakfast and go perform my
resistance-training portion
of my day for my second
workout. I am a full-time
male model and travel constantly
from the Gulf coast of
Florida to Miami for castings/
bookings, etc.
XM: Who are some of your favorite models
and designers, and why?
AM: There are many great models currently out there. It is
difficult for me to choose just one. I appreciate all of them
in their own ways. Watching models throughout the years
has pushed me to follow my dream, and have proven to
me that I can be a model that has a different look and to
never give up even if you get rejected. Without designers,
models, including myself, would not be able to express
ourselves as easily. I have many designers that I follow
and wear, to name a few of my favorites they are: Versace,
Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, and Coach.
XM: Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs, and
catalogs do you visit most often?
AM: I don’t have as much time as I would
like to read my favorite fashion magazines,
websites or blogs. But when I do, I like to
read GQ Magazine, Men’s Health Magazine,
and find myself going through
various designer’s websites to purchase
my latest outfits for personal
use and photo shoots. I also make
my way to different fitness websites
where I look for workout supplements
and vitamins. I do most of
all, enjoy going onto social media,
such as FaceBook, Instagram, and
Twitter, so that I may interact with
all my supporters, which I dedicate
most of my time to when I am not
working.
XM: Which magazines or online webitorials have you
been featured in? Any major?
AM: I am featured in Azzarenko Magazine, which was
released in October 2014, along with another magazine
called Fashion For Men, which was also released in
October 2014. As I have been featured in many online
webitorials, just to name a few are: Buzzfeed, BE Style
Magazine, Ogespanish Talk Show Magazine, Madame
N’oire, and others. I have also been featured in some local
Trinidad and Tobago Newspapers, one of them being
Women’s Express.
XM: How would you describe your style? Consider
anything and everything from color to historical eras
and
more.
AM: I would say my style is urban, due to my locks,
but I don’t let that solely describe my style. I like to be
versatile; I can do a sport/fitness look and then turn
around and do high-end fashion. I think is very important
for a model to be like a chameleon and be able to
adapt to any situation / look as needed.
XM: What other modeling projects have you
done?
AM: One of my first projects was a featured extra on,
“The Glades”. So far I’ve been in two of Jennifer Lopez’s’
music videos, “Adrenalina” and “I Luh Ya Papi”. I
am honored to say that I am one of the first male models
with dreadlocks to be in a JcPenny Salon national
campaign, which has been released, and you can see
me in their stylist book. I also did a photo shoot with
Keyshia Ka’oir for a fitness line, which is also released,
as well as a couple other magazines, “Azzarenko” and
“Fashion for Men”. I appeared in a few morning shows
promoting JLo’s music video, “I Luh Ya Papi”, as
well as my debut and upcoming model career.
XM: What is fun and rewarding about modeling? What
do you dislike about modeling?
AM: Getting to work with and meet new people, getting
to experience so many new things while learning about
the industry as well as yourself, and traveling are all fun
and rewarding aspects of modeling. The only thing I
dislike about modeling is its’ prejudices. For example,
when I first started, and even to this day, agents and
clients both wanted me to cut my hair to attain that
“clean” look. Even though I get rejected due to my hair,
it makes me unique, and certain clients like that and
I’m not planning on cutting it anytime soon.
XM: How do you prepare for a modeling
shoot?
AM: The preparation that I go through before a shoot
typically consists of fast cardio, sauna, a small breakfast, and
massive amounts of caffeine!
XM: What are some things you dislike/hate
about the fashion industry?
AM: The only thing I really dislike about the fashion
industry is the prejudices it places on the models. It seems
that clients only want the “Abercrombie” guy, the cookie
cutter as I like to call them. Once in a while, however,
clients like to take a risk on a more “edgy, exotic, ethnically
ambiguous” (all names I’ve heard to describe my look), and
that’s where I come in.
XM: What’s your favorite outfit from your
own closet?
AM: My favorite outfit from my closet is a knit turtleneck
sweater that I can’t wait to pair with a sports coat!
XM: How has modeling changed other aspects
of your life?
AM: Modeling has made me “popular” in a sense. I get noticed
the times I do go out, but it has opened my eyes to the
endless possibilities. Modeling has also given me a better
sense of fashion, a better understanding of the industry, and
an enormous amount of respect for the work that’s put into
final products.
XM: Describe working with the incredible Jennifer Lopez.
How was the experience? Do you have any encouraging
words from the superstar?
AM: Working with J.Lo was such a surreal experience! She
is an incredibly nice, down to earth, beautiful woman. I had
an amazing time on set, got to meet a lot of great people
whom I was able to learn from, and experienced something
that not many people can say they have. One of the things I
remember, was J.Lo telling me that she liked my hair….all
the encouragement I needed!
XM: How was the experience working with Joseph Cottrell
and his team?
AM: The photographer and his team were excellent,
focused, and professional. We had a lot of fun during the
shoot, from changing outfits to different poses, and swinging
my hair for that great shot. Looking forward to working
with them again!
XM: What advice do you have for other
aspiring models?
AM: My advice for aspiring models is, don’t give up!
You have to stay persistent, especially dealing with
rejection. If it’s your passion, find a means to achieve
your goals.
