XM BEAUTYEDITORIAL HAIR + MAKEUP ARTISTHEIKOPALACH“ THE MEANING OF MY “BEAUTY” IS ACTUALLY THE TYPES OF FACES THAT INSPIRE ME.”ALL IMAGES PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ELIZAVETA PORODINA

PHOTOGRAPHED BY ANJA FRERS

XM: What has been the biggest challenge of your career?HP: My biggest challenge has definitely been organization. I need to organizethe work and appointments. I need to prepare for the travel andVisas. I also need to keep up with the webpage, Instagram, phone calls, and everything else that comes with the job.XM: When did you begin your career in makeup artistry?HP: I began my career as a makeup artist in London where I had myfirstshooting. There, I was booked for a big photographer from Milano todo hair. On the first editorial, the makeup artist became sick. I boughtsome makeup and tried out for the shooting. It went really well! Thiswas where my career began.XM: What are some of your favorite products in your makeup kit?HP: Chanel products are my favorites and they have also supported mefor many years. Thank you Chanel!XM: What brought you to makeup artistry?HP: My talent and passion to do hair and makeup is definitely whatbrought me to this business.XM: When did you know a career in beauty was for you?HP: It was when I moved to London and had my first show for AlexanderMcQueen. I was working with Guido Palau and his hair team. This wasthe point in my life when I knew this is what I wanted to do.XM: How would you define the meaning of “beauty”?HP: There needs to be something that inspires me to do the hair andthe make-up. The meaning of my “beauty” is actually the types of facesthat inspire me.XM: Where do you see your career in the next 5 years?HP: You never know what is happening in the next five years. I wouldlike to make a book with all of my work. But, I have done everything thatI wanted to do. I love what I do and hope that I can continue to do whatI am doing now.XM: What is your signature look?HP: I didn’t know that I had a signature look. People say that they knowit is my work when they see it. But, it all depends on what I have in frontof me, and what inspires me.XM: What makeup artist inspires you?HP: I have many people that inspire me. For make-up artists, it is PatMcGrath, Val Garland, and Serge Lutens. They have really inspired meand I still have the opportunity to work with them on shows sometimes.I respect them and what they do because it is a hard job, and people donot realize the work that is put into this job and how hard it can be.They are amazing artists.

XM: What are some of the most important qualities that a makeup artistcan have?HP: Talent is definitely the most important quality to have.XM: Can you share with us some of your greatest moments of yourcareer?HP: I can’t really share all of my moments that I have had in the lastyears, because I have had so many great experiences, and I get to work withgreat people. The last that I remember was the Givenchy show in Paris. This was the last big moment that made me want to do this job evenmore.XM: How has makeup changed other aspects of your life?HP: This is a difficult question, because I am the happiest person inthe world. I think that what has changed most in my life is that I don’thave so much time for family and friends anymore. I travel a lot, so if Iam home it is like a holiday, and I don’t want to leave again. This is theaspect that has changed the most in my life.XM: How would you describe your style of makeup? Consideranything and everything from color to historical eras and more.HP: My style is that I want it to be a lot and also very exciting.Sometimes I just want to leave the models beautiful just as they are. It alldepends on what I am thinking about and all of the aspects on the set. Itis teamwork, and how the person inspires me on the shoot.XM: Do you have any major upcoming projects that’ll soon bereleased?HP: Yes, I have a lot of upcomingprojects. But, I do not know where or when they will be out. There areabout ten editorials for which pictures have not yet been chosen. Thereis plenty more to come!XM: Out of all the images you’ve made so far with otherphotographers in your career, which is your favorite and why?Explain the creative process of getting that perfect, powerful shot everytime.HP: I have a lot of photographers that I want to work with and that Ienjoy working with. My favorite at themoment is a young Russian girl who I call Bee, and who inspires me, ElizavetaPorodina. We do a lot of things together, and we think the same.We choose pictures, design, re-touch, models, and everything together.XM: Is there an inspirational quote that sums up your work?HP: It may sound kind of funny. But, because you can’t change anything,I always say, “It is like it is.” This is my inspirational quote.XM: Other than makeup artistry, do you have any hidden talents? If so,what are they?HP: I like to create things and tore-style my flat. When I have pictures in my mind, I also like to makehats or pieces for my shootings. I make them all myself, and this is somethingthat I enjoy doing.

COCO&BREEZYXANDERMAG| 183

XM: Where do you pull the majority of your inspiration from?C&B:We pull our inspiration from different things in life, such asarchitecture, art, and life in general! We aren’t as much inspired byfashion, but by the aesthetic of art and life combined. Most of our glassesare vintage, futuristic, classic and bold. The original idea of how wegot inspired by creating an eyewear company was when we were youngerand victims of being bullied. This is actually how we found our love forsunglasses. A lot of kids bullied us and really didn’t understand us, so wewould buy vintage frames and cheap sunglasses off the streets to wear inschool. By being so artistic and creative, we decided to design our ownsunglasses and that is how COCO and Breezy Eyewear was born!XM: From sketching to finished product, how long does the processtake?C&B:The process varies. We are always carrying a notebook and pen, sometimes a marker! Anywhere we go, sketching is always a must.Sometimes there are sketches that we produce that were sketched fiveyears ago or even a day ago. All in all, we sketch and then we create atheme around our collection. We feel that our pieces are very classic andtimeless We go from a sketch to sourcing out different materials andcolor ways, to creating a tech pack, which is a technical drawing with allof the sizing and details of the product. Once we complete that, we gofor our first sample. Our first sample takes about thirty days ofproduction. After we receive the first sample, it takes about fifteen daysto go over any requested changes. From there, we go to full production, and this can take anywhere from 60 to 90 days.XM: Where do you see your career in the next fewyears?C&B: In the next few years, we can see ourcompany being more than just about eyewear. Weare the leaders of our generation, so our eyewearcompany will scale and expand. As for Coco andBreezy as a brand, we can see ourselves travelingthe world, doing more inspirational speakings andcreating other products that everyone can relate to.Our ultimate goal is to share our story and inspirethe world, show people that they can do it too!XM: How would you descibe your sense of fashionand style?B:I like to be comfortable. A mix of street and chic’,all in one. That’s me and my style.C:I like to be chic’ as well. We love to be reallyclassic, but creative with our outfits, but comfortable.Simplicity goes a long way for us. But, wethink the eyewear is our outfit and the outfit is ouraccessories. So, we just like to wear bold sunglassesand really simple jeans and t shirts.

XM:Was there ever a hard time in your career where you felt uninspired or wanted to give up? Whatkept you motivated despite hardships?C&B:With being an entrepreneur, there have been some ups and downs. We have never felt like wewanted to give up, but there have been some hardships. We always think back on how we startedwith nothing. Us going through a downfall was just to test our passion and thought process. If onebad thing happens, you can’t let that take over your whole life. For us, we use that time to step backand reevaluate our time and goals. Most importantly, when you love what you do, you’ll never stop!XM:What advice can you give to other creatives trying to reach their goals?C&B:The advice that we would give to other creatives, is to not only be creative, but take the time toeducate themselves on the business side of things. It’s not only about being creative, it’s aboutfinding that balance between business side and the art side of things. Create goals for yourself andpush yourself to the limit! Don’t let anyone stop you, and never look back.XM: Since your latest collection is released, are you going to start drafting ideas for your next 2016-2017C&B: We don’t really design for seasons because we reallycreate timeless pieces. But, we are constantly designing andnever ending. We are always thinking about the future andnew ideas. But, we don’t name our collections by seasons oryear. We feel like everything that we touch has to be timeless,or else what isthe point of designing? But, we are constantly thinkingabout the future. It isalways good to be a visionaryand be on top of the game.XM: Are you working on anymajor upcoming projects?C&B:Yes, we do have a fewawesome projects that we’reworking on, but can’t releaseto you at the moment. We aresuper excited just to continuegrowing our brand. Be on thelook out for more collaborationsand new products thatwe are soon launching as well, stay tuned!XANDERMAG| 185

XM:What is your signature look?C&B: Our signature look, as our aesthetic and design process, is very classic, geometric andtimeless. It’s a bit funky, yetfunctional! We are all about creating a functional pair of sunglasses that aren’t only cool, butvery comfortable with an awesome fit.XM: Can you share with us some of your greatest moments of your career?C&B:When we migrated to New York with nothing except a dream and passion, having nomoney and without a place to live. That was the greatest time of our career! During thattime, we developed such a level of ambition and drive that we’ve never felt. We madesomething out of nothing, and today our seeds are continuing to grow. Our story is soexciting, yet so inspiring even to ourselves! Other than that, we’ve had a ton of good experiences. We are always thinking of ways to become better and what moves we should makenext!XM: How would you descibe your style of eyewear? Consider anything and everything fromcolor to historical eras and more.C&B:Most definitely a vintage feel with a futuristic twist! We do use a lot of black andbold colors. We design a lot of combination frames where metal, acetate and rubber coatedtreatment are all in one. It adds texture and excitement to the eye! It takes a certain type ofpersonality to wear our glasses, but it’s not only about fashion, it’s about the functionality.XM: Is there an inspirational quote that sums up your work?C&B:A quote that sums up our work is, “The eyewear is the outfit and the outfit is theaccessory.” We believe that our glasses are the outfit. It is a bold statement, and you don’thave to be fashionable to wear them, because they make you fashionable. Also, with ourwork ethic, we would tell people to not only work hard, but also work smart and strategic.Step forward and go for your dreams, be an over achiever. Do whatever makes you happy, because tomorrow is not promised to any of us!XM: How has eyewear design changed other aspects of your life?C&B:Eyewear design has changed our lives tremendously, even wearing sunglasses gave usa level of confidence that we’ve never had. Seeing sketches become reality, along with thefirst prototypes are completely mind boggling. Who doesn’t want to see their ideas come tolife? There are people all over the world who desire to purchase, wear and cherish somethingthat we’ve created. Just thinking on it, is simply spectacular!Stay UpdatedInstagram: @cocoandbreezyFacebook: /cocoandbreezyOfficial Website: www.cocoandbreezy.comXANDERMAG| 187
