TALKING GOOD
CHARACTER
The EBP Conference delivered the truth about ‘grit’
RED ARROWS
FLY AGAIN FOR STEM
The theme of The EBP’s annual
conference reflected the UK
Government’s recent drive for ‘character
education’, emphasising qualities like
self-discipline, motivation, honesty and
respect.
Held at the Lincoln Doubletree Hilton
in March, the conference discussed
the value of these qualities and,
importantly, ways to foster them.
Speakers described how experiences
within and beyond the classroom are
key to developing integrity, commitment
and determination – often described as
‘grit’.
Research Associate for the Jubilee
Centre for Character and Virtues, Emma
Taylor delivered a keynote speech on
the value of social action both to the
community and in developing young
character. Emma was joined by #iwill
ambassador Rhiannon Sweeney (left),
who spoke from the heart about the way
involvement in the campaign and social
action has helped her grow as a person:
“I’m passionate about helping others,
and I’m glad I can make a difference
in my community – it’s made me the
person I am today”.
Guest speaker Guy Horridge, of national
educational charity CVQO (above)
talked about the character development
journey through education, while Chris
Baron of Butlins spoke engagingly on
this essential factor in recruitment and
throughout employment.
The conference aimed to inspire
attendees to embed this concept into
their work, via pathways ranging from
sport and music, teaching character
education as a stand-alone subject, to
volunteering in the community.
Sixth Form Learning Mentor at King
Edward VI Grammar School in Louth,
Jessica Mackett praised the conference
and the value she was able to take back
to her students. Anne Scott from the
Department of Work and Pensions
agreed, adding, “The EBP provides a
good network of support for the young
people I work with”.
The EBP has many products and
services supporting character
education. To learn how they
LEADING FROM THE FRONT
Beth Curtis joins The EBP’s leadership team
The star-studded ‘Red STEM’
event, Spark Engineering Festival
and forthcoming Construction
Week combine to inspire
students’ scientific interest.
The EBP and RAF Scampton team up
again on an event celebrating science,
technology, engineering and mathematics
(STEM) subjects on 8 July.
Red STEM will give 150 students exclusive
access to 20 hands-on activities and
exhibits. All have the aim of showing
STEM subjects’ real-world applications
and bring them to life. Exhibitors ranging
from the Universities of Lincoln and
Sheffield to the NHS and BAE Systems
will present experiences from a mobile
chemotherapy unit to a 3D printer.
National celebrities Jason Bradbury and
Carol Vorderman have both confirmed
their attendance, adding touches of
glamour to the occasion. The EBP’s STEM
Coordinator Paula Bailey commented,
“It’s a thrill to be working with famous
experts like Jason and Carol, who will
really help to communicate the excitement
of science, technology, engineering and
maths to students across the county”.
In another recent success, The EBP, City
of Lincoln Council and the Lincolnshire
Chamber of Commerce supported the
Spark Engineering Festival at Lincoln
Cathedral. The festival was organised
by local engineering firms including
Siemens, Micrometric and Dynex. Over
400 young people experienced 11 handson
activities offered by local engineering
firms and colleges alongside The EBP.
The next opportunity for young people to
engage with real-world applications for
STEM subjects is The EBP’s joint event
with Lincoln Group Training Association
(LGTA), Construction Week in autumn.
Primary students have the chance to
‘build’ skills from stonemasonry to
decorating and joinery on 29 September,
with secondary schools rolling up their
sleeves on 30 September and 1 October.
or to learn more about The EBP’s
STEM services, future events and
with famous experts like
Jason and Carol, who will
the excitement of science,
The EBP is thrilled to introduce our new Head of Business Development and
Operations Beth Curtis! With an impressive background in marketing and business
development for further and higher education, Beth describes her key skill as
“building partnerships”, particularly between educational institutions and business.
Within The EBP, Beth manages two delivery teams across a range of products, and
leads on the new packages of EBP products currently being rolled out to schools
and colleges (see back page). She took on this daunting role with a passionate
desire to promote products that benefit not only her own organisation, but also
business partners and the wider community.
Beth lives in Lincoln with her husband and children, who provide two more reasons
to care deeply about local education and opportunities for young people.
