Nortel Networks Germany GmbH
Deutsche Bahn AG
Nortel
1999 - 2006
Together with Nortel Networks
Germany GmbH, HÖRMANN
Funkwerk Kölleda GmbH designed
the dual mode train radio in
compliance with GSM-R -EIRENE/
MORANE specification. The project
includes not only the delivery of train
radio but also engineering,
commissioning, first of class
installation and after sales service.
In 2002, the first high speed railway
line on the ICE-track Cologne-
Rhine/Main operating under GSM-R
coverage was inaugurated. All trains in the line were equipped with GSM-R train radio from
HFWK. Up to today, 10,000 train radio terminals have been delivered to the German
Railways. The actual production capacity amounts to 550 terminals per month. Additionally,
HFWK equipped with ETCS cab radios trains running in the ETCS test line in the Leipzig
area.
► Train Radio Terminals and Operating Devices for Deutsche Bahn AG
According to the requirements of Deutsche Bahn AG Funkwerk developed different variants
which are chosen depending on place of installation, train type and requested features. The
different configurations are determined by:
 environmental conditions of installation
temperature; protection grade etc.
interfaces to the train MVB, RS422, UIC etc.
 applications
analogue voice radio; GSM-R voice radio; data services etc.
► Central unit MESA 25-01: ZG25-1 for SBB
By order of the Swiss Railways (SBB) a new generation of cab radios (GSM-R CAB Radio
MESA 25-01) is developed, based on the already successfully integrated and reliable type
series MESA. By integration of current new developments and adaptation to the Swiss train
technology - requirements of the SBB will be met for a sophisticated, innovative cab radio
with high stability.
Funkwerk has equipped the dispatching centres with a modern telecommunication system for
DB AG, which firstly allowed to control different infrastructure and to integrate into one
terminal.
Seven dispatching centres have been equipped by Funkwerk between 1999 and 2001.
There is a 24 h telephone hotline for dispatching centres in Germany.
► GSM-R-network access Frankfurt/Main and Duisburg
With the beginning of the installation of the GSM-R network in 2004 the first dispatching
centres have been connected to the GSM-R network as well. Since that time train traffic
successfully runs on the highspeed track Cologne/Rhine/Main controlled by the dispatching
centres of Frankfurt and Duisburg.
► Underground Nuremberg (RUBIN): driverless
underground
In a venture which is unique in Germany, the Nuremberg public transport operator, VAG
Nürnberg, plan to introduce completely automatic driverless trains to two of its underground
rail routes: to the U3 line in 2006, followed by the U2 line during 2007. At the same time it
intends that security and safety standards in stations and trains will be further upgraded, and
to facilitate this, the transport authority and the Nuremberg civil works department have
awarded the Funkwerk Group for the part of the video surveillance, data processing and
WLAN infrastructure.
Passenger compartment surveillance via WLAN with live-pictures directly to the centre control
room.
20 km distance of the underground are equipped with WLAN.
30 trains from Siemens Transportation Systems are equipped with SMC VI video recording
system including Wireless LAN option.
► Project CAF / STIB, Metro M6
IIntegrated system for optical and visual passenger information and video surveillance
Funkwerk delivers for the new metro-train units of the Spanish vehicle producer
Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A. (CAF) and integrated communication system
that integrates the following applications and components:
Video recording in the passenger compartments
Localisation of the vehicle position via transponder
 Exterior and interior displays
Audio components ( amplifiers and loudspeakers )
 Emergency intercoms for passengers
Operating components for the driver ( MMI for announcements,
 MMI radio communication, handset )
 Wireless LAN components (interface, antenna)
The system’s control is managed through the SMC video surveillance computer. The wireless
data transmission allows data transmission and a picture transmission from the passenger
department to the security centre. For the optical and visual passenger information the
Funkwerk's Isytrack system is used.
► Project KDI - Suburban Railway Berlin
The suburban railway implements the train dispatching process by the driver within the
operating and information system project.. Therefore the equipment of the passenger
information attach a great importance.
The project target is the implementation of an integrative communication, data and
information system for the vehicle types 481, 485 and 480 that displace the existing IBIS
control units in the mentioned vehicles.
The vehicle types will be directly at the S-Bahn Berlin GmbH equipped with Funkwerk's
Modular Computer (FMC).
The integrative communication, data and information system combines a huge amount of
new functionalities such as:
 Energy-saving operation mode
 Improved diagnostic function
 IP ability, Voice over IP
 Redundancy conept
 Wireless, site-related data supply
 Synthetic voice (TTS)
 Synchronisation of the network data
