Working with families and carers
We work with disabled people of all ages
and their families. Our family advisory service
responds to families’ requests across Scotland
and our Parent Enabler Project (PEP) supports
families with younger children in the NHS
Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.
Chloe
Since her play sessions from our Parent Enabler
Project when she was 3 years old, Chloe and her
parents, Lorraine and Pete, have received support
from Sense Scotland in a range of different ways.
Initial play sessions were a crucial way for our
PEP team to connect with Chloe and find out what
she enjoyed doing. Sensory stories and messy
play, helped Chloe to play and learn.
“We looked at eye-pointing, to encourage
Chloe to make some choices in her play, around
that time.” explained PEP advisory worker
Rachael Tonge.
“She does that very well now!” Mum Lorraine
added: “You can tell if she wants to do it, or if
she doesn’t, very clearly.”
PEP also worked early on through physiotherapy
which involved lots of actions and movement.
“At the time, Chloe was not quite as able to sit
as she is now…and supporting her, it was difficult.
It was good to have the extra pair of hands - and
the extra person to sing!”
Rachael also helped through the process of
choosing schools for Chloe and passed on useful
information and contacts for the family.
Lorraine and Chloe are especially fond of the
regular parties which Sense Scotland throw
for children and young people.
“We love the Christmas parties because the
interactive story is great.”
And as Lorraine noticed, a sensory story at our
recent LUV Fete event, had a real impact on Chloe:
“She loved that. We spent ages afterwards talking
to the storyteller because Chloe had been so
animated. She had actually been trying to pick
the beads up out of the jewellery box… We’ve still
got the two pink hearts that Claire (the storyteller)
gave us at the end of the story.”
Our Out and About resource was the next area
of support within Children and Families services,
which gave Chloe a range of new experiences
and had some unexpected benefits for mum:
“She loves the sensory room!”
