On long journeys stop for breaks every two hours and use the break to check your messages. If you need to work or keep in contact on a long journey, consider taking public transport instead, which is safer, better for the environment and means you can get work done. Whether or not you drive, you can help to make roads safer by pledging never to speak to someone who you know is driving, to protect them and other road users. Remember - limits are not targets. At 20mph your stopping distance is about half that at 30mph, so you will have a much greater chance of stopping and avoiding hitting somebody if you need to stop suddenly. As a cost conscious young driver driving at 20mph through urban areas will also save you money as you will drive more smoothly. What else can you do? As a cost conscious young driver, you could consider getting insured with a telematics insurance company, for example Marmalade, who sponsor Brake’s 2young2die campaign. Telematics companies use a black box to monitor how safely you are driving and base the cost of your insurance on your behaviour on the road. Brake thinks that insurers who incentivise and reward young people for driving safely is a positive step. Pedestrians We all know that we should look out for pedestrians, and as drivers we have more responsibility to ensure the safety of others. We particularly need to keep an eye out for children around schools, homes and shops. Many areas are now 20mph speed limits which need to be observed, but drivers can also look out for others by slowing down to 20mph around areas where people live.
