Formula 1 Racing Car
In the magazine: RC cars
4
Sebastian Vettel drove his RB7 flawlessly to win the 2011
drivers’ title with four races to spare. He started from pole in 15 of
the season’s 19 events, and during races the distance between him
and his pursuing rivals was normally ten seconds or more.
fruit while the Force India team was convinced that it
had a ‘supertalent’ in Paul di Resta, then the current
DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) touring car
champion. The Force India management, and many
other people in the sport, expected great things from
this promising young Scotsman.
The regulations had also been changed.
Constructors had to do without the aerodynamic
advantages of the F-duct, originally conceived by
McLaren. Instead, the FIA stipulated that in 2011
drivers would be allowed to change the angle of the
upper plane of the rear wing on predefi ned straight
sections of track. This would open up a slot in the
wing, reducing the downforce and associated drag
There were a number of changes to the FIA technical
regulations for the 2011 season. These are the highlights:
GEARBOX The minimum period of use for a gearbox was
increased from four to five race weekends.
AERODYNAMICS The F-duct, operated manually by the
driver, was now banned, along with the double diffuser.
Instead, the regulations permitted the use of the Drag
Reduction System (DRS), which enabled the angle of the
rear wing to be adjusted to reduce its downforce and drag,
Lever for
recoil
onto the rear diffuser to increase its effi ciency – hailed
in the early part of the season as a stroke of genius
from Red Bull designer Adrian Newey – was forbidden
for the second half of the season.
and Receivers
Fuel tank plastic
The fi rst race of the season was originally scheduled
to be the Bahrain Grand Prix, but because of political
unrest in the Gulf kingdom the event was held in
Melbourne instead. Although Red Bull was the only
one of the big teams not to use KERS, Sebastian
Vettel led from pole and only relinquished the lead
for three laps after a pitstop. He then took the lead
again and crossed the fi nishing line an impressive 22
seconds ahead of McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton.
Behind them, Mark Webber fi nished in fi fth place,
earning useful championship points for himself and
During a pitstop, Red Bull’s highly skilled team of mechanics –
seen here in action in Turkey in 2011 – can change all four wheels
on the car and send it on its way again in under three seconds.
that would not be possible with four-wheel drive cars,
and this provides an ‘authentic’ Formula 1 feeling and
long-lasting driving pleasure on the circuit. The rear
The a l-important ability to decelerate is provided
by a central disc brake, built into the drive train, which
slows down the two rear wheels of the car. But if the
car should nonetheless be involved in a co lision or
supplied with a robust racing body that was specifi ca ly
designed for use on the racetrack and it wi l survive
minor co lisions without damage. Complete with its
body, the size of the 1:7-scale RB7 racer is 689 x 250
x 150mm. In addition, in the course of the series, you
wi l have the opportunity to buy an inexpensive display
body for your model. This can be fi ted onto the
chassis of the car in just a few simple steps, and it is
the Red Bu l RB7 a star in any showcase.
The front wing of the RB7 model is very much the
model features two e fective cascade wings above the
THE REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM
The RB7 model is contro led using a Kyosho Syncro
The remote control unit operates in the 2.4GHz
integrated antenna. Unlike an analogue system, a
digital remote control requires no quartz crystal, and
after switching on, the vehicle links up with the remote
control by means of an unambiguous signal. This
prevents any interference with othe radio control
systems. The car is contro led by a pistol grip remote
