Take time to destress
season
The holidays and
stress are upon us! Holiday
stress hits our pocket
books and our most important
relationships.
With this in mind, an
obvious question is what
can we do to destress our
lives, as well as, the lives
of those we care about.'
For Christians, we
should seek to become
more Christlike in character,
thoughts, words and
deeds. .
We should try to become
less worldly (selfcentered
and materialistic)
in our focus and behaviour
and to become more
concerned with reaching
out to and blessing others
by being loving of others,
joyful, peaceful, able to
suffer through personal
hurts, more kindly to
others, more gracious to
others and good, and
faithful (see Gal. 5:22).
So what In the world
does this mean for those
that aren't Christian or
familiar with Christian
jargon. It simply means
to major in the truly important
things this holi-
day season and to cut
yourself and everybody
else some slack on the
minor stuff. Let me explain!
Jesus said He came so
that we might have life
and have it abundantly!.
He said that the devil
only comes to rob, steal
and destroy! Jesus also
said I have come to destroy
the works of the
"",'""' " ' 1
devil!
Life for Jesus was
equated with positive relationships
(starting with
new birth) both with God
and with others. Jesus
emphasized seeking and
doing things that are truly
good for us and others.
You and those you
love can put more joy and
relaxation back in the holidays
by decommercializing
the holiday's and by
figuring out what will
truly be a blessing to
yourself and those you
love. That does not involve
more a bigger or
better presents, but involves
blessing others
with accepting, kind, loving
relationships and activities
which foster positive
relationships.
Rarely will people remember
and cherish what
you gave them for Christmas,
but they will remember
and cherish that you
honoured them and made
them feel good. Destress
by going light on holiday
spending and bless people
in ways that truly count!
Val d'Or twinners make their
pitch to school board trustees
NEIL HORNER
Observer Reporter
While they hope to
equal the success of the
Shiraoi Twinning Committee,
the Val d'Or
Twinning Committee isn't
using them as an exact
template for their own endeavours.
In fact, the mere similarity
of their name with
the city's original twinning
group has proven to
be somewhat of an obstacle.
;
Speaking to the last
meeting of the old"board
of school trustees Wednesday
night, Val d'Or
Twinning Society President
Peter Walsh said that
while the group plans to
organize exchanges with
their Quebec counterpart,
they will be emphasizing a
more school-Ijased approach.
"We would like to
grow like Shiraoi, but our
approach is more curricu-
lar than theirs, as French
is a core subject and one
of the official languages
• of our country," Walsh
said. "We had a problem
at the beginning because
Victoria thought our
name was too close to
Shiraoi's, so we had to get
a letter from that group
saying it's not a problem
in order to get registered
as a society."
That part is done
now, Walsh said, and the
core group of directors,
Olive Armitage, Don Matilla,
Dennis Lessard, Michelle
Lessard, Neil Horner,
Sean McDevitt, and
Selena Mell, have come
up with the beginnings of
an ambitious program.
"We are hoping to
have exchanges from not
only students, but community
members as well,".
Walsh said. "We would
like to see sports groups,
arts groups, musical
groups and others involved.
We are trying to
encourage our similarities,
rather than our differences.
Like the saying
goes, everyone smiles in
the same language, and
they play hockey in the
same language, too."
For instance, Walsh
noted that the group is
currently working with
the old time hockey teams
from Val d'Or and Quesnel.
The exchange won't
be just limited to bodies
passing back and forth,
either. The Val d'Or
Peter Walsh distributes Twinning Society information to trustees on Wednesday night.
Neil Horner photo
Twinning Society plans to
make full use of whatever
technological advances
they can as well.
"We want to set up
exchanges on an e-mail
basis and do teleconferencing,"
Walsh said. We
want to encourage you to
encourage your schools to
participate, both teachers
and students. We know
there is no money, but
there is expertise."
The Val d'Or Twinning
Full set of medals for Quesnel player
For Liz-Anne Eyford, just being
The medals were an unexpected
bonus.
Still the Quesnel woman didn't offer
to turn back any of the medals she
earned at the World Masters Games in
Melbourne, Australia, and she had a
mitt full.
In fact,'Eyford brought back a complete
collection of medallions, all earned
in badminton. Her gold was in the 45
Isn't it just typical of
Canada to go into battle
I refer not to a literal
This is not intended
That's because the selection
won't know for sure
about the availability of
several marquee players
until perhaps 24 hours before
the start of the world
It means Canada will
be aTot weaker than possible
because guys like Jay
Well, nobody's to
Getting it right
Sometimes in the really young age group of minor hockey, it's difficult to gets kids to understand
the concept of positional play because they all want to follow the puck. But
here, they get it right as two players battle for a loose puck along the boards while a
third waits to pounce on it when it becomes free.
Curlers chase perfection
Westside Foods is to curling what
the Miami Dolphns were to football in
1972.
In other words: perfect.
' The Dolphins, to this day, are the
only team in National Football League
history to go through a season with an
unblemished record.
Westside Foods isn't there yet, but
they're headed in the right direction.
Westside Foods remained perfect in
Quesnel Super League curling action this
week, but skip Al Jacques had to work
for the latest victory.
That's because Cariboo Pulp
brought its 'A' game to the Quesnel Curling
Club on Wednesday night, and the
rink skipped by Jack Dawson gave
Westside Foods all they wanted before
falling 12-11 in an extra end.
In another extra-end thriller, Willis
Harper (Debbie MacKenzie, skip)
squeezed by the Red Bluff Inn (Lucky
Buholzer) 8-7.
The worst beating of the week was
an 8-0 licking Gamache Construction
(Len Gamache, skip) laid on Bo Peep
Boutique (Roger Kaleta).
In other games. Fountain Tire (
Larry Giesbrecht) outlasted the. Billy
Barker Casino ( Ben Ruether) 10-8, Eraser
River GM (Brent Hodgson) pounded
on Murphy's Pub (Laurie Warwyk) 8-1
and Eldorado Enterprises (Vic LeBlanc)
tripled the score on Centreline Collision
(Rick Smith) 9-3.
Jr. team could be stronger
From Page 22
Suppose'you say OK,
and let Blackburn, or
Bouwmeester, or Weiss go
to the world junior championships.
Suppose they
get whacked and bang up
a knee, or a shoulder, or
perhaps break a leg.
You've lost a valuable
asset to your team. And
for what?
Your boss is go i ng to
be seriously ticked off
with you, and for good
reason. Plus, the NHL
team is on.the hook for
the injured player's full
NHL salary, plus the salary
of whoever you bring
in to replace him.
So you can't blame
anybody.
However, there is a
solution: don't let anybody
play in the NHL
until he has reached the
age of 21. Imagine how
much that would improve
the overall junior hockey
That would mean
