TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s first reading, Joshua challenges the people to
decide whom they will serve. Recalling God’s faithfulness
to them and to their ancestors, the people declare, “We
also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.” May we, too,
be mindful of God’s gifts to us and renew our
commitment to serve Him with grateful hearts.
First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community
DVD sessions by Tim Gray
The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as
Christians. With divisions, immorality, persecution, and other trials of the faithful, the message
of St. Paul to the Corinthians is a much-needed message for our own times. First Corinthians: The
Church and the Christian Community explores the key elements that the apostle Paul introduced
to a new and growing Church. St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the nature of grace and the
Church as the Body of Christ. In addition, he introduced the Corinthian Christians to the most
powerful gift of all, the Eucharist.
SCRIP NEWS
Schedule Notes: Next weekend our nation celebrates
Labor Day. There will be NO SCRIP sales on Saturday or
Sunday in observance of this national holiday.
Back-to-School Promotions
Congratulations to Emily Walden
...the winner of a $100 SCRIP gift certificate in the
Kindergarten/1 st Grade Giveaway.
Hopefully, all our school families picked up the special
order form available at the SCRIP table on Back-to-School
night. The deadline for placing an order using the special
order form is Monday, August 27. Placing an order of $100
or more with that form makes you eligible to win a $100
SCRIP gift certificate.
Merchant Reminders: We like to suggest that everyone
pick up a new order form every now and then to see the
many opportunities there are to earn SCRIP credit.
Whether you are using SCRIP for gas, groceries, fast food
options, home improvements, retail shopping,
entertainment or gift giving, you are sure to find something
that meets your needs and earns SCRIP credit.
* One of our favorite merchants to highlight is Land’s
End; it can be used for purchases from the Land’s End
catalogs as well as all your purchases at Sears and K-
Mart. While Sears and K-Mart have their own gift
certificates, the profit from Land’s End is usually 16-
19% in comparison to Sears/K-Mart at 4-8%.
* Be sure to check out the list of special merchants listed
in the box at the bottom of the backside of the order
form. There are many other merchants not listed on the
form but they can be special ordered with a little
planning.
* The SCRIP coordinators are always willing to help you
get the most out of SCRIP.
“SOUND BITES”
FROM THE ADULT CHOIR
From Aggie - ”Let people know what a great
group we are. I wouldn’t be there for 50 some
years if I didn’t love singing & praising God.”
From Gene: My enjoyment of Thursday night practice and
singing on Sunday, is the ability to not just listen to the
music and words but to think about them spiritually and let
it touch and bring joy to my heart. It does not hurt that the
music selected I consider to be beautiful and seasonally
appropriate music, given the readings, that speaks to the
soul.
The Adult Choir begins rehearsals on Thursday,
September 6, 7:30 p.m. in the Church. NEW MEMBERS
ARE WELCOME-Sopranos, altos, tenors and bases! For
more information, call Karen at the Music Office, 484-6570.
GIVE HANDBELLS A TRY!
Have you been inspired by the beautiful sounds our handbells
make? Do you want to have fun and fellowship while serving God
ringing handbells! There will be a beginner’s workshop in handbell
ringing on the evening of Wednesday, September 5, from 5:30
and an expert in handbells for 30+ years will be our guest leader
for the session. All adults and youth of high school age are
welcome to attend. Your attendance is not a commitment for you
to ring in the handbell choir, but I hope you will love it enough to
consider that as a possibility at some point. If you can count to
four, if you like to have fun, and if you are alive and
breathing...you are qualified to come! Please call Tim Robison at
