Part II: <strong>The</strong> Radio Sky<br />

<strong>The</strong> above (upper part) picture represents a<br />

panoramic view <strong>of</strong> how the entire sky would appear if<br />

our eyes were sensitive to radio waves rather than to<br />

light. <strong>The</strong> lower diagram is the same 360degrees <strong>of</strong><br />

sky as it might appear visually to our eyes. If we could<br />

walk out at night and see in radio frequencies, such a<br />

sight would go a long ways toward persuading<br />

astrologers as to the existence <strong>of</strong> preferential<br />

directions in space. Some areas <strong>of</strong> the sky have more<br />

things happening in them than do others.<br />

While "bright' discrete radio sources (like our visual<br />

stars) do stand out, the overpowering sense received<br />

from such a view is <strong>of</strong> the overall shape or body <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Milky Way galaxy. At radio frequencies, there is no<br />

mistaking the galactic plane and the very heart and<br />

center <strong>of</strong> the galaxy. It abounds with light. Even at<br />

visual frequencies, we can renew our sense <strong>of</strong> cosmic<br />
