Dear 6,7,8 Families,
We hope your summer is off to a great start. The campus is alive with Summer Camp, but feels very
different without all the students here. Currently, our middle school teachers are spending time with
family and are spread out over the country from Maine, Rhode Island and Virginia to St. Louis and
California. Teachers are teaching summer camps, getting married, having babies, attending conferences,
working on curriculum and spending quality time with family and friends. We hope that you, too, are
finding ways to relax and enjoy your summer.
Staffing
For the 2010-2011 school year, I am thrilled to share that all of our current staff will be returning. Susan
Cleveland, Director of Middle School, will be coming back full time and be on campus five days a week.
Heather Graesser, Science and Homeroom teacher, will be taking the beginning of the year off through
September to be with her new baby boy Donovan David, born on June 16 th , and will return in October.
Stephanie Bender, Middle School Counselor, will add time to her schedule, and will be working at least
80%. Meg Perkins, Learning Specialist, will be reducing her time to 60% working three days a week to
support teachers and students. In addition to all of our current staff, we are working to hire increased
support staff for our math program and learning resources program. This additional staff will support
and challenge all types of learners. Personnel will work with teachers and students to differentiate
curriculum, extend thinking and provide more opportunities for challenge within our middle school
program. As we confirm our hires, we will be sure to let you know more about them.
Sports
After-school sports are an integral part of the 6-7-8 program. Our aim is to provide our students with
opportunities to play competitive sports within a program that emphasizes participation, teamwork,
sportsmanship and a commitment to improving skills individually and collectively. Primarily, the Middle
School faculty, coaches our teams, although we occasionally have teachers from other areas of the school
who help round out our coaching needs. Our coaches provide athletic skill development, within a
supportive and positive approach.
There are no tryouts for the Middle School teams and we welcome the diverse level of skills that the
students bring with them to each of the different sports we offer. We usually have a group of students
who are trying a particular sport for the first time, as well as others who may play the same sport
competitively outside of school.
All students are expected to participate in the sports program for at least one of the three seasons. Many
will choose to play two or three sports. Students may opt out of the sports program entirely if they have
an ongoing, prior afternoon commitment, such as gymnastics or ballet. Families should speak with their
child’s advisor or the Athletic Director if they have this scheduling conflict.
We are looking forward to another exciting year from the Bulldog sports program and anxiously await
your participation. Sports will begin on Thursday, August 26 th with team meetings and introductions
until 3:45. The fall season will continue through the end of October. Practice times are 3:15-4:30
Monday through Thursday. The participation inventory sent out at the beginning of June gives us a
sense of how many participants we have for each sport and what our coaching and equipment needs will
be. There are still opportunities to join a team or remove yourself from one in the fall if your schedule or
interest level changes. Please discuss your child’s participation thoughtfully so your responses are as
accurate as possible. A reminder that this sports information and all other forms are due July 31, 2010.
Summer Reading
This year’s summer reading assignments are posted on the 678 page at www.stanleybps.org. The texts
selected and accompanying assignments are linked to the Social Studies and Language Arts Curricula
and will enhance these subject areas. Enjoy your reading and remember not to wait until the last
minute!
