Northeast china chapter news
In June, AmCham China Northeast China said farewell to two
of the chapter’s executive committee members: Tim Frosell,
Goodyear, and Ella Onn, Santa Fe Relocation Services—both
had been promoted within their companies and have moved to
Shanghai to continue their careers there.
We welcomed a new executive committee member, Nathalie
Helganson, ISOS Dalian Clinic manager. Helganson has always
been a very active member of the chapter and we are very excited
to have her on board. She has lived in Dalian for over eight years
and is the only EC member residing in Dalian’s Golden Pebble
Beach area. Her involvement will help bring the different areas of
the city closer together.
The chapter this month held its first networking event in
Shenyang, which received over 60 business professionals. We
would like to thank the US Consulate General for co-hosting the
event, and support from Double Tree Hotel by Hilton. The chapter is
planning to host more events here on a quarterly basis. Stay tuned
for our next networking event in Shenyang on September 5.
Events in July/August 3
AmCham China In Ac tion – member spotlight
Right from the start of his 17 years living and working
Beijing, Christian Murck has been an influential figure within
the AmCham China community, serving in the leadership role
at multiple levels including as committee chair, board member,
board chair, and president. He completed a successful
three-year run as AmCham China president at the end of
Jin peng
On the transformation of China as a business destination:
We’ve seen a dramatic growth in the economy and particularly
in the businesses of American and other foreign companies
in China. When I first came, the general view of a lot of critics
of the American business community was that US companies
were not making any money in China, never would make any
money in China, and that it was a foolish investment.
I, and plenty of others, disagreed. When I was in the banking
business, I was one of the people who signed on to approve
the participation of my bank in a syndicated loan to finance
General Motors’ first factory in Shanghai. Since then,
that has become a very big and profitable business, and an
important part of GM. That’s an experience that many other
companies have had as well.
Hometown: New York, New York
Time in Beijing: 17 years
The city, then and now:
I’ve seen a very dramatic change in the fabric of the city.
When I arrived in Beijing, the Third Ring Road had just been
completed. The others were either under construction or
being planned. The physical infrastructure of the city, the
central business district itself, and many other things have
been completed in that time. The expansion of the subway,
all of the Olympic facilities—all that’s been built while I’ve
been here.
The neat thing about living here is that every six months,
you feel like it’s a new city. There are new restaurants; there
are new things to do and some other things have been torn
down or gone away; there are new government policies;
and the economy has been growing and upgrading very,
very rapidly. The dynamism of the place has been obvious.
You see that in the business community. You also see it in
the art community. We’ve been collecting in a small way—
Chinese painting and other things—and you see it in the
policy debate, in academic life, in the social media, in the
development of the museum culture of China and many
other ways.
On the diversity in the community:
My contacts with Chinese people have been very energizing.
They’re working hard; they’re ambitious; they’re learning
a lot; they’re moving very quickly. Colleagues in banking, consulting
and at AmCham China have been committed and I’ve
learned a great deal from them. The community of people who
live in Beijing is diverse and rich. You have, of course, the government,
which means that you also have the large diplomatic
community. You have a huge community of journalists. Having
lot of universities means students and academics are here.
The city also draws a steady stream of international visitors.
You even have the dissident community. They by choice live
close to the central government. So it’s not only a business
and commercial group—it’s extremely varied.
On joining AmCham China:
I was in Taiwan from 1991 to 1996, and active in the chamber
there. I was on the committee that did their first white
papers and chaired the chamber in 1995 and 1996. When I
came to Beijing, one of the first things that I did was joining
the chamber here. Since I was interested in the policy and advocacy
agenda, I joined the Public Policy Development Committee
(now the Policy Committee), and chaired that committee
when the first three White Papers were edited. I’ve been
deeply involved ever since.
The evolution of the chamber since I joined:
AmCham China was a much smaller organization when I
came here in 1996. Since then, it has grown in size, and be-
AmCham China In Ac tion – member spotlight
June. But before he could ride off to the sunset back to New
York City for a slower, more relaxed pace of life—and fresh
air—we caught up with him for a special member spotlight
feature for a discussion of the changes he had witnessed
over the years in the city, the community and the chamber.
China’s business community is composed of one of the
most diverse and interesting groups of people in the world.
Every month, Business Now spotlights one of AmCham China’s
3,500 members, offering readers a more personal look at
neighbors, business associates and friends in the community.
come more professional. We now organize large-scale events
like the Appreciation Dinner. We’re also doing significant work
in capacity-building, particularly in aviation, healthcare, clean
energy, agriculture, export compliance, and work safety.
Across a range of areas, we’re much more active in partnerships
with both governments that directly promote business
objectives than we were seventeen years ago.
The Aviation Cooperation Program started here is the
model for similar programs in China, Brazil and India. We have
innovated in helping American companies succeed and our
host country accelerate its development. That’s very satisfying.
We’ve also built credibility on policy with both the Chinese
and the US government. We were active in developing support
in the US for China’s accession to the WTO. And that was a
turning point. Before 2001, our member surveys showed that
many companies were losing money. After WTO accession,
there was a rapid widening in market access as the Chinese
met their commitments, and both the profitability and scale of
US companies improved dramatically. Ever since then, we’ve
had close contact and good access with the host government in
China, the US Embassy and the US government in Washington.
Favorite AmCham China event:
It has to be the Appreciation Dinner every year. It always surprises
me: the number of people that come, the scale of it. One
feature of Chinese socializing is that at big dinners, people don’t
just sit at their tables and eat and talk to the person
sitting next to them. They grab a glass of baijiu or wine
and leap up and start running around the room toasting
people and looking for people they know, or buttonholing
people they don’t. I always find it amazing. I’ve never
quite gotten used to it, not even now, but it’s more fun
than similar events elsewhere.
Greatest rewards as AmCham China president:
Chamber members are the largest group of my
friends. I’ve been fortunate to work with strong boards
and chairpersons and I’ve enjoyed their talent, knowledge
and creativity.
AmCham China is a platform that builds friendships.
It hastens the way you can penetrate the broader
business community outside your own company
and your own industry. It’s relatively easy if you’re in a
given industry to get to know your competitors. It’s not
so easy to get to know firms and people across the
whole sweep of the business community. That’s one of
the things that you naturally do through participating in
AmCham China.
As president, I’ve felt the last three years were like
drinking from a fire hose. We’re doing a couple of hundred
events a year; I only get to go to about half of them,
but always feel I learn something. I’ve really enjoyed the
exposure this job gives you. I’ve experienced that the
whole time I’ve been in Beijing, as a member, board
member, board chairman, and as president. I wish everyone
well and I look forward to returning to visit. The
pace of change will not slow down in the next few years.
