Student Corner 24 E c o f r i e n d l y technology, an upcoming trend in the market, is pushing every other technology t o i t s l i m i t . Natural materials are used in such technology. Bamboo is one such material. Bamboo is a fast growing plant with a rare combination of flexibility and toughness. It is used in construction work. So we, Sai kiran M, Sumedh S, Sriteja M, Venkatesh Babu, Venkatesh B and Chaitanya M –all III yr students of Mechanical Department took it to the next level and designed a cycle that is made of Bamboo sticks. We got our Bamboo sticks from Narsapur forest and through online sources we could get the other equipments for the cycle. This cycle has various merits. A cycle of Bamboo withstands vibrations stronger than conventional metal. Another feature that best suits its usage is its flexibility and machinability. Even though it has many advantages, its usage is often restricted to its strength, and durability. Since olden days, conventional engineering materials are strengthened using heat and then hardened by hammering. New technologies made these methods outdated. However, these methods can be harnessed to improve the strength of Bamboos. So, with the help of a mini Oxyacetylene torch, we can generate the source of heat. An interesting feature of Bamboo is its top layer of moisture and sugar content (green color). Upon heating it in the direction of growth (combing the fibers), we condense sugars to form hard surface on surface increasing its strength. First, we heat it till surface of bamboo changes to light brown and then to dark brown in the following stage. Next task is to design a frame for the cycle. After working on stresses and various forces, we came up with a design. We drew the same on a table and with help of pins we could design an outer frame where we could fix our bamboo sticks for joining purpose. Utilizing the machines available in our college, we could get desire lengths and shapes. Metal frames are formed using welding process but this is not possible with bamboos. So we used coconut fiber to tie the sticks. However, the joints couldn't be done without a bonding agent that is often used in cement technology known as Epoxy. While using materials from nature, we need to consider the effects of nature too. With the passage of time Bamboo loses its surface (especially in rainy season); this could be reduced by keeping it away from moisture and with some coatings. Our heat treatment process protected Bamboo from these effects to a ertain extent. Except for the frame, other parts ere from conventional cycle like tyres, brakes, hain and axles. is is one application of a promising ecoendly material which is not only naturendly but also it is highly economical and uces the burden on conventional ones. re is lot of scope for improvement and ncement of its applications. Bamboo Cycle Chaitanya M, III B.Tech Mech, BVRIT StoreDot Develops Battery that Can Charge Your Smartphone in 30 Seconds M.Likhitha, I B.Tech ECE B, BVRIT StoreDot says that charging one's mobile phone in a matter of seconds could be possible by 2016. The technology firm, which has its headquarters based in Tel-Aviv, Israel, learnt that by using nano-technology in order to synthesize artificial molecules, batteries can be transformed to act like super-dense sponge. This enables them to absorb and retain power, achieving a fully charged battery status at a much faster rate. This innovation revolves around the building of "nanodots" which the company refers to as bioorganic peptide molecules. Nanodots perform a significant role in changing the way the battery works by allowing quick power absorption as well as its retention. Currently, the prototype seemed bulky for a mobile phone which may impede the product's faster proliferation in the market. However, StoreDot believes that it will be able to come up with a slimmer version by 2016. When that happens, it could just be the first slim battery that can quickly absorb and deliver a full day of p o w e r f o r m o b i l e devices in half a minute. "These are new materials, they have never been developed before," said Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot's founder and Chief Executive. Company investors include Chelsea soccer club owner and Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich who is said to have spent $10 million on the project. So far, the company had accomplished two funding rounds which enabled them to reach a total fund of $48 million. Mr.Myersdorf added that they have also received a backing from a leading manufacturer of mobile phones based in Asia. With the innovative technology, Myersdorf said that mobile devices could have a recharging capacity of up to 1,500 times which eventually increases its life by three years. He is also revolutionizing the recharging time for a car battery by enabling owners to recharge within two to three minutes. The need to create a faster charging battery may be the smartest move that a company can make considering the fact that the smartphone market continues to grow. This year alone, it is speculated that the number of smartphone users would reach a staggering 1.75 billion. "We live in a power hungry world...people are constantly chasing a power outlet. StoreDot has the potential to solve this real big problem," said Zack Weisfeld, a mobile phone analyst. DETECTING GASES BY SMART PHONES D. Jai Chender Sai, I B.Tech ECE B, BVRIT A new way has been devised to detect hazardous gases and environmental pollutants, using a simple sensor that can be read by a smart phone. These inexpensive sensors could be widely deployed, making it easier to monitor public spaces or detect food spoilage in ware houses. Using this system, researchers have demonstrated that they can detect gases like ammonia, hydrogen and cyclohexane using sensors. The main advantage is that there is no wiring and power involved in this. It consists of simple electrical circuits so that their resistance changes. Measuring the change in r e s i s t a n c e r e v e a l s whether the target gas is present or not. This process requires almost no energy and can function at ambient temperatures. The new sensors are made of modified near-field communication (NFC) tags. These tags receive the little power they need from the device, and function as wireless addressable barcodes. They are mainly used for tracking cars and pharmaceuticals as they move through a supply chain in a manufacturing plant or warehouse. NFC tags can be read by any smart phone that has near-field communication capability. They send out short pulses of magnetic fields at radio frequency (13.56 megahertz), including an electric current in the circuit on the tag, which relays information to the phone. To adapt tags for their own purposes, the MIT team first disrupted the electronic circuit by punching a hole in it. Then, they reconnected the circuit with a linker made of carbon nanotubes that are specified to detect a particular gas. The researchers added the carbon nanotubes by drawing them onto the tag with a mechanical pencil in which the usual pencil lead is replaced with a compressed powder of carbon nanotubes. They refer tags as CARDs - Chemically Acutuated Resonant Devices. Current versions of CARDs can each detect only one type of gas, but a phone can read multiple CARDs to get input on many different gases, down to concentrations of parts per million. The researchers have filed for a patent on the sensing technology and are now looking into possible applications. Because these devices are so inexpensive and can be read by smart phones, they could be deployed nearly anywhere to monitor environmental pollutants. The researchers are also pursuing the possibility of integrating the CARDs into "smart packaging" that would allow people to detect food spoilage or contamination of products. The CARDs could also be incorporated into dosimeters to help m o n i t o r w o r k e r s a f e t y i n manufacturing plants by measuring how much gas the workers are exposed to. The best part is, it is low-cost, disposable and can easily interface with a phone. The first ones were designed for soldiers, who routinely suffer from chronic back, hip and knee complaints from shouldering 135- pound (61 kg) packs on their backs all day. Ekso Bionics has been working on its project for more than a decade. The first version required 2,500 watts of power and a giant backpack full of motors and batteries to operate. But the company also developed much smaller devices, called passive walkers, which can support a person's body weight and sip just 4 watts of power. Later, the company designed a mid-level device that gives a wearer some active assistance in walking, and uses about 250 watts of power, which is now being developed by Lockheed Martin. The new device, called the Ekso, is now helping stroke patients learn to walk again. People who suffer from stroke often have to be helped to their feet by three people, who must hold the patient between two parallel bars, and the person often gets tired after just a few steps. In addition, a person who has had a stroke may have levels of strength and muscle control that differ on the right and left sides of their body. The Ekso can provide different power levels to either leg, responding to the patient's strength. With the bionic suit, patients can walk hundreds of feet when they first stand up. They aren't concerned about getting tired, and the variable strength means they don't favor one side as they would if they were walking on their own.The new exoskeleton can also help people with spinal cord injuries. The technique can allow them to build and preserve their muscle strength, and can help undo some of the health ailments that can come with being in a chair all day long. Right now, the devices are too expensive for consumer use, and just a few hundred versions of the bionic legs are being used by physical therapists. But the company is also developing simpler exoskeletons that could be used to help the elderly walk around without tiring, or to allow those doing extreme sports to get ever-more extreme. The company has also built bionic, passive exoskeletons to help construction and manufacturing workers hold heavy tools without fatiguing their arms. Robotic Harvesting R.Neeraja, I B.Tech ECEB, BVRIT In field crops like corn and wheat, there are relatively few challenges. A single farmer can harvest a wide area quickly by riding over it, using GPS to steer and many companies are exploring ways to automate the process further. Farm equipment maker, Kinze Manufacturing Inc. and Jaybridge Robotics are developing technology that allows tractors to operate without a farmer behind the wheel. For other crops, particularly fruits, it's messier. More human labor is usually needed for harvesting. Workers often pick fruit by hand, being gentle to avoid bruising it. But a growing number of companies and researchers are developing robotics to address those challenges as well. Robotic Harvesting LLC, based in Los Angeles, is testing a product for strawberry fields. Its prototype rolls through the fields with a camera that identifies berries and a robotic arm picks them. The arm is a foampadded claw, which can pick a strawberry every five seconds, places them on a conveyor to be carried to the top of the vehicle and placed in boxes.
