qualifying races up until April 2010, with 26 April 2010 being
the final cut-off date.
Upon receiving the qualifying information, the runner’s entry
will be confirmed.
Entries will not re-open if a large number of runners fail to
qualify. No refunds of entry fees will be given to those runners
who did not qualify. “We would have already ordered medals
and t-shirts for all athletes by the end of the qualifying period,”
says Renee Jordaan, race director.
CLUBS AND LICENSES
All runners who enter must submit their 2010 running club and
running license to the CMA as soon as it has been issued by their
club. Failure to do so will result in entries being rejected. The final
date for this is 26 April 2010.
NEW MEDALS
In line with the celebrations of the 85th anniversary of the race,
a new medal will be awarded to runners who complete the
89km course within the 12 hour time limit. Runners will receive
a commemorative 50mm medal, which is the largest medal ever
to be awarded (the regular size is 30mm). The traditional yellow
and black ribbon will also be changed to a black ribbon with the
South African flag and 85th anniversary logo on it. Back-to-back
medals for 2009 novices are still available. As in the past, all
entrants will receive a goodie bag with sponsored products and
a t-shirt.
CELEBRITY CHALLENGE
Several celebrities have been identified to take part in the
Celebrity Challenge in 2010, highlighting that a person doesn’t
have to be a talented and gifted athlete to be able to run and
complete in the Ultimate Human Race. These celebrities include
Kabelo (Kwaito star), Ferdinand Rabie (Winner Big Brother
SA), Asanda Siloti (runner up: Biggest Loser SA), Lugile Radu
(DJ/actor), Phumlani Dube (sports presenter), Doug Watson
(cricketer), Ryan Sandes (Desert Runner) and Garth Wright
(former Springbok scrumhalf).
COMRADES LEGENDS CHALLENGE
There are so many legends that have competed in the Comrades
Marathon over the years and who have assisted in making the
Comrades, arguably, the greatest Ultra Marathon in the world.
The CMA has identified legends such
as Shaun Meiklejohn, Bruce Fordyce
and Willie Mtolo and is in current
discussions with these athletes in
order for them to compete against
each other and the rest of the
20 000 anticipated athletes lining
up at the start in 2010. The legends
and celebrities will be running for the
Amabeadibeadi Comrades Charity Campaign comprising of the
Starfish Greathearts Foundation, Wildlands Conservation Trust,
The Sports Trust and Community Chest.
PRIZE MONEY
The prize money has been increased to R2.28 million which
makes it the biggest purse in South Africa. The first prize for men

Comrades entries are open and for those runners
looking for some early inspiration and exciting tips
on how to make the 2010 Comrades memorable,
this event is a must-see. The Comrades roadshow
makes a stop in Johannesburg in October. The
great Willie Mtolo, Comrades gold medalist and
holder of several SA titles, as well as Ian Laxton,
broadcasting personality, and Comrades coach,
Lindsey Parry, will be sharing their experience and
advice with all runners on the road to Comrades
2010. If you still considering running Comrades,
but haven’t yet committed, this is a great evening
to help you make that important decision.
