Session 1 Introduction to International Health: Scope and Nature of the Course History of Development Objectives 1. To provide an overview of the scope, objectives, format and expectations for the course. 2. To introduce the faculty and students to each other. 3. To review the historical determinants of the global development and the impact of globalization on the health of the people. 4. To identify the students’ interests and experiences and match with potential clinical placements based on geographical, cultural and/or clinical areas of interest. Key Concepts: development, developing countries, less industrialized countries Suggested Tutorial Activities 1. Outline the course expectations and format including roles, expectations and plans of the students and tutors in the literature to be examined. 2. Introduce participants’ areas of knowledge and experience, personal objectives in taking course, and identification of possible clinical placements. 3. Introduce and discuss different “views” of the world with particular reference to “developing” countries and vulnerable populations. Required Readings Seear, M. (2007).
