to introduce
you to Bethany
Vernon,
the new
Resident
Services
Manager for Independent Living.
Bethany started on December
29 and has been learning
all about Arbor Acres and the
Resident Services Department.
She meets with all of our new
residents; plans the discharges
from the hospitals for independent
living residents; manages
the E.L.I.T.E. program;
sets up individual services that
residents may need; and works
closely with Rachel Gladstone,
Director of Resident Services, to
make sure residents and their
families have the information
and services they need to make
their lives here as happy and
comfortable as possible.
Bethany moved to Winston-Salem
about a year and a half ago
from Asheville with her
husband, Adam, and their
four children: Sarah, 12; Joshua,
11; Jonathan, 7; and Joseph,
4. She graduated from Western
Carolina University in 2009
with a Bachelor of Social Work
degree. Her husband is an Associate
Minister at Wesley Memorial
United Methodist Church
in High Point and is a native of
England.
Other changes in the Resident
Services Department include:
Susan Smart moved her office
to the first floor of Asbury Place
and is working primarily with
the residents that have moved
to this beautiful location. Susan
welcomes visitors if you would
like to come over and see Asbury
Place.
Janis Gorlick is concentrating
on designing and implementing
a new transportation system for
our campus and staffing it with
volunteers and Arbor Acres employees.
Please give her
a call with any ideas you may
have for this transportation
project. Janis will continue to
recruit volunteers for our campus,
manage the three beautiful
beauty shops and work
with residents when they make
a move to a new location on
campus.
Gary Bartholomew and Joe
Merlan will continue to run the
efficient Transportation Department
but are now located in
the Fitzgerald Health
Center building. They will
continue to transport every
resident on campus to their
doctors’ appointments. Please
contact them by dialing extension
1288.
We welcome all the new faces
at Arbor Acres and are happy
to help any residents who have
questions about the changes
on our campus. If you need
further information, please call
the beauty and power of their singing. Why is this
so? Is it the language? Is it the romantic spirit of
the Italian people? Is it the warmth and charm of
the Latin soul? Discover the answers for yourself
Movie: Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959)
(G)
Darby (Albert Sharp) is
an aging caretaker who
tells many tales of the
little people. Michael
McBride (a pre-Bond
Sean Connery) is his
replacement who falls
for Darby’s daughter,
Katie (Janet Munro). Most people of the town
don’t quite believe Darby’s tales, but many humor
him out of respect for the art of Irish storytelling.
Fun songs crop up throughout the film, including
one crooned by young Connery. Though this is an
American film, produced by Disney, it brings out
the Irish in ye, and is ranked by some as the #1 St.
Patrick’s Day movie.

Sharon Fogarty is based in Winston-Salem and is a
graduate of music performance from the University
of North Carolina School of the Arts. She began her
musical journey on the Irish whistle, then switched
to flute. She studied classically under the
direction of Debra Reuter-Pivetta and Philip Dunigan.
Five years ago she found herself back in the
world of Celtic music which led her to co-found the
group Immigrant’s Daughter, a Celtic music group
consisting of flutes, fiddle and harp. She also performs
with a Celtic rock group called Brynmor.
Luke Payne is a musician also based in Winston- Salem,
North Carolina. He holds a Master of Music
degree from UNCSA, where he studied classical guitar
under Joseph Pecoraro, and is currently studying
Hindustani classical music on the sarod with
Gaurang Doshi. He performs frequently in diverse
musical contexts, from jazz to classical to pop. He is
a member of the band Lean In, and has been awarded
a grant from the Forsyth County Arts Council to
complete his debut album of original songs.
Luke and Sharon unite their talents to bring you an
evening of dance tunes, such as jigs, reels and hornpipes,
and some slow airs and songs like “Star of the
County Down” and “Foggy Dew.” We hope you can
come out to experience the magic of Celtic music.
or 23. We will discuss the process of creative writing
using the reflections of Natalie Goldberg from her
book, Wild Mind, and those of Anne Lamott from her
book, Bird by Bird. The most unique aspect of this
group is time set aside each meeting to engage in
some directed, creative writing using exercises provided
by Goldberg. Sharing of anything that is written
will be completely voluntary and no experience is
necessary. We spend anywhere from an hour to an
hour and a half together dependent on the will and
mood of the group. Yummy snacks will be provided to
fuel the imagination!
Author Study a Grand Success
The group study of the stories of Flannery O’Connor
has just wrapped up, receiving rave reviews (well,
okay, not everyone loved the stories, but most
seemed to enjoy the discussion). Therefore, we’re
looking to continue the series with studies of two
other authors, possibly Annie Dillard and Wendell
Berry, but, as always, we’d love to have suggestions
from you! Watch for a coming announcement of the
date and time for this series, and let Bert (ext. 1590)
know of any authors you’d like to study.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: The Gathering
Place, The Fitness Room, Jule’s Pools
The Gathering Place will continue to be open
most of the time during renovation of Corpening
building, but will close for a brief period to install
sprinkler systems and electrical work. We will
continue to hold classes in this space but you can
gain access through the single RED elevator in the
Passageway. The main Corpening elevators will
be closed during renovation.
This holds true for the Fitness room on 2nd floor
as well. You may continue to use the fitness
room but please use the RED elevator in the passageway
and please remember to wear your PET!
The swimming pool, aka“Jule’s Pool,” will also be
open until construction begins in that area. However,
the Corpening parking lot will be closed to
residents, staff and visitors because it is a construction
zone. To access the pool please park in
the administration lot at Berrier building. Come
into the reception area and continue to the pool
table. Go through the door at the window seat
(across from the pool table) and follow the path
to the Terrace entrance or to avoid the hill - take
the McPherson elevator to 3rd floor and walk
across to the Corpening Terrace to the pool entrance.
This will allow you access into the pool
area. If you live nearby on campus you may walk
down the steps at Bayberry and enter the pool
through the Terrace entrance. Watch for more
details in a cubby letter and keep an eye on TV 6
for updates on changes. Now is the time to practice
Healthier You! Kick-Off
Monday, March 5, 2:00 pm, Bay Window
“I have two doctors, my left leg and my right
leg,” wrote British author George Trevelyn in
1913 about the health benefits of walking.
Nearly a century later, modern medical experts
echo the same advice: get up and walk!
Our walking program starts Monday, March 5,
and continues through Friday, March 30. We’ll
track the distances and amount of time you
walk, and in April will celebrate all participants’
accomplishments with coffee and doughnuts
(just one!) Whether you prefer walking solo or
with a group, please follow these walking tips:
Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
Always wear sunscreen.
Walk against traffic.
Wear light-colored clothing.
Avoid walking at dusk.
Wear your PET.
Breathe Better for Fun and Profit
Guest Instructor: David MacMahon, N.D.
Tuesdays, March 6 – April 24
1:00 pm, Jean Steelman Chapel
You read that right - breathing better is both fun
and profitable. Will it make you rich? Yes, if you
consider that being healthier, feeling better and
enjoying life more are worth a lot. Most people
take breathing for granted until they have trouble,
like shortness of breath or painful breathing,
or asthma, emphysema or any other breathing
disorder. Then they quickly realize how critical
breathing is, not just for life, but for quality of
life. Breathing well can help relieve pain, reduce
stress, lower high blood pressure, make everyday
tasks easier, raise energy levels, sharpen
mind/brain activity, increase immune function
and improve quality and length of sleep. There
is a lot more to learn about breathing well,
including simple, easy techniques to address a
wide range of physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual issues. Come get your share of the fun
in this 8-week series of classes led by David M.
McMahon, N.D, a board certified holistic health
practitioner based in Winston-Salem.
Classes are at 1:00 pm every Tuesday beginning
March 6, 2012, in the Jean Steelman Chapel.
Save your seat by signing up at the bay window.
Deadline to sign up is Monday, March 5th. Cost
is $15.00 for the 8-week series; your account will
be charged.
Croquet is for everyone!
There is scheduled croquet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 pm; however, the court and
equipment shed are open and available for practice or play anytime the weather cooperates.
Six-wicket croquet is for everyone (guys and gals) so if you are interested come by the
