Stay Active this Summer!
Ahh, summertime, and the livin’ is easy but it’s
also active at
Arbor Acres.
In the cool
morning hours
grab a mallet
and play golf
croquet! Last
month, many of
you learned the basics with Ron Lloyd, croquet
professional at Pinehurst. Hone your skills with
fellow croquet enthusiasts every Tuesday and
Thursday at 9:30 am on the lawn beside the
Club House. Or call a friend and play at your
convenience. Croquet whites not required; water
bottle suggested; equipment provided.
Arbor Acres has lots of walking paths around
campus, with varying degrees of difficulty.
Whether the route takes you around Lakeside,
up to Asbury Neighborhood, or through Hanes
Park, each is perfect for an early-morning
power walk or after-dinner stroll. When the
weather’s bad, try our indoor routes – the tunnel
is a good place to start. This summer we’re
taking “a walk to the beach” - not literally, of
course, but we’re covering a comparable number
of miles, with
celebrations along
the way. The walk
kicked off in May
but it’s not too late
to get started. Contact
Katherine for
information. She
can also give you a
copy of the walking routes on campus, indoors
and out.
When it gets just too darn hot to be outside,
there are plenty of things to do inside. There’s
walking, certainly, but there are also weekly
fitness classes in Fellowship Hall and Asbury
Place (see enclosed calendar for specifics),
and lots of machines in the Corpening Fitness
Room on the second floor, and Clingman Therapy
Center in Asbury Place, which will work
every muscle in your body. Before using any of
the equipment please schedule an orientation
with Katherine.
Another way to stay active and cool is to shoot
some pool (and you thought it didn’t count as
exercise!) Join the regulars at the pool table
beside Fellowship Hall (their motto is “the more
the merrier”) or play a game or two with Sam
Dalton at the table in Asbury Place. Get a taste
of pool at our annual Billiards Tournament,
Wednesday, June 13 - Friday, June 15. You can
enter the competition or stand on the sidelines
cheering on the players.
Still looking for ways to stay active this summer?
Come by our 5th Annual Wellness Expo on
Friday, June 8, in Fellowship Hall. Representatives
from Arbor Acres and outside vendors will
be on hand to offer suggestions and answer
questions about wellness, fitness and an improved
quality of life.
Enjoy summer, stay active and
remember - move it or lose it!
Impress your grandchildren with your knowledge of
video games AND sports with Wii (pronounced
“wee”), a fun and easy (yes, you read that correctly)
way to get some exercise. Let’s say you want to play
tennis. Wii displays your opponent on a large monitor,
which you face sitting or standing. Holding a remote
control, you engage the “virtual” opponent just as you
would one in real life, but you choose the pace and
difficulty level. Some of you have tried Wii bowling
and golf; now we have fencing, archery, canoeing, and
skydiving (!), all in the air-conditioned comfort of Fellowship
Hall. Janice and Misty will be on hand to help.
Adept in interpreting composers of yesteryear and
today, Solomon Eichner is rapidly emerging as a force
to be reckoned with in piano performance. His sensitive
touch and keen ear are those of a mature artist,
garnering for him many awards in worldwide piano
competitions. This versatile artist, specializing in the
Baroque and Romantic periods, is also a student of
composers’ histories, details of which he includes in
his program. A graduate of the Manhattan School of
Music, Solomon is working towards his Master’s Degree
at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.

Mary Ruth Dobbins,
Miss Dorminy Speaking
Fellowship Hall
For Mary Ruth Dobbins, dance lessons at Miss Dorminy’s
Studio in the old Zinzendorf Hotel are as much a
part of her childhood memories in Winston-Salem as
movies at the Carolina Theater and the sweet smell
of roasting tobacco permeating the air downtown.
When Dobbins returned home after 40 years of being
away, the Carolina Theater and tobacco factories
were gone but Miss Dorminy was still here, and,
at 90 years old, still teaching dance. Fascinated by
Miss Dorminy’s astonishing life, Dobbins recorded
their many conversations, compiling them into Miss
Dorminy Speaking. Tonight Dobbins will share the
story of a woman filled with spunk, shine and style.
“Senior Class,” a group of people aged 63 – 80 who
love making music. Their versatility shines in group
singing, solos, and duets, with particular attention
paid to the music of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Their objective
is “to provide great entertainment and have as much
fun as we possibly can” – with a mission like that, how
1:00 pm DVD: DOWNTON ABBEY - Part 1 of 7
Fellowship Hall
It’s 1912 – there’s war in the Balkans; there’s disaster
at sea; there’s a fatal expedition to the South
Pole - but nothing compares to the drama unfolding
at Downton Abbey! The Crawley family has lived at
this grand North Yorkshire estate for generations, but
change is afoot as a crisis of inheritance threatens to
displace them. When the heir-apparent arrives, hope
for Downton’s future takes shape, but petty jealousies
and ambitions among the family and the cadre of servants,
not to mention the looming spectre of war,
threaten to derail plans to preserve the home place.
This award-winning production from Masterpiece
Theatre, originally aired on PBS, is a joy to watch –
the costumes alone are worth the effort. Each of the
episodes is approximately 45 minutes long and will be
shown on seven consecutive Fridays.
she won the Fall 2011 concerto competition. Wow!
At UNCSA, she was a student of our own Bob Listokin.
good career in music ahead of her. She’s got what it
takes.” In August 2012, Kristina begins a Doctorate of
Performance as a recipient of the Vera Blacker Scholarship.
While there, he regularly accompanied singers,
cellists, saxophonists and oboists. Stephen earned
The 8th Annual Arbor Acres
Billiards Tournament
Wednesday, June 13 - Friday, June 15
2:00 - 5:00 pm
Pool Table beside Fellowship Hall
The hushed crowd watches each player as he or
she stares intently at the table. Finally, the player
takes aim and, with a gentle tap, sends the eight
ball to the corner pocket. Rolling slowly, the ball
reaches the edge, falters, then, miraculously,
drops in. The crowd roars. The player, stunned,
lifts his arms into the air and gives a jubilant shout.
Hugs and laughter follow. And with that, the winner
of the 2012 Arbor Acres Billiards Tournament
is crowned! Will Sam Zachary threepeat? Will Sam
Gorlick, last year’s runner-up, come through? Will
Dick Stockton surprise us all and triumph? Or will
you be the grand champion?
The tournament is open to all, no matter your
experience or lack thereof. Participants will receive
a handicap based on skill level. Frank Tullos,
a professional pool player, will officiate at the
tournament. He’ll also treat us to demonstrations
of his crackerjack pool shooting talent. For more
information call Sam Zachary, 723-7938,
or David Riffe, 761-2300.
