PVA ADHESIVE WOOD BONDING BEST PRACTICE
PVA “D” Grade - D Stands for Durability
PVA wood glues are usually described and classified according to their resistance to water as determined by European
Standard EN204. This equates to four durability or “D” grades of PVA with the following applications:
INTERIOR ONLY
SUITABLE FOR
D1 Wood moisture content is less than 15% Interior areas, where the temperature only occasionally
exceeds 50°C for a short time and the moisture
content of the wood is less than15%
D2 Occasional short-term exposure to running or condensed
water and high humidity
Interior construction
Furniture construction
D3
D4
Frequent short-term exposure to running or condensed
water and heavy exposure to high humidity
*Exterior water not exposed to weather
Frequent long term exposure to running or condensed
water.
Exterior exposed to weather, when protected by an
adequate surface coating.
Interior construction
Furniture manufacture
Window frames
Window frames
Outdoor furniture
The best results will only be achieved, if the correct grade of PVA adhesive is selected for the application.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surface preparation is as important as adhesive selection. A good bond requires that a thin layer of PVA adhesive
is applied to a surface which is free of a) Plane skipped, torn, crushed, chipped or loose wood fibres, b) Foreign
matter such as, oil, grease, grit and dust.
Wood surface should be bonded within 24hours of cutting or dressing, in order to reduce the risk of surface oxidation
or moisture variation.
Knife cut surfaces as produced by planers and routers, give the best bonding surfaces. These tools leave a smooth
open grain, enhancing the adhesive penetration into the wood surface fibres, producing a strong bond.
Sawn surfaces give a good bonding medium, although the cut is rougher than those produced by planes or routers
it is still satisfactory for structural and non-structural joints.
Blunt saw, plane and router blades will tend to crush the wood fibres. This will reduce the ability of the PVA adhesive
to penetrate the wood surfaces fibres and will ultimately reduce the quality of the bond. Cutting edges should
be kept sharp.
Serrated glue spreader
Roller
Brush
Sufficient quantity to coat both surfaces with a thin layer
Typically 0.15mm to 0.2mm (6microns to 8microns) thick
Typically
150 g/m 2 when manually applied to one surface
100g/m 2 when machine applied to one surface.
Double sided application is usually recommended for hard woods.
Typical 5 to 40 minutes
Very dependent on ambient temperature and substrate moisture content
Softwood typically 8-10bar (125-150 PSI)
Hardwood typically 12-17bar (175-250 PSI)
Density of wood being bonded dictates the pressure required. Too much
pressure can drive the adhesive into the wood, reducing bond quality.
Too little pressure will not ensure close enough contact between substrates
reducing bond quality.
Press times are dependent on adhesive coat weight and substrate
Typical figures are:
Hot Press (Decorative laminate/plywood) 50°C/8mins
Cold Press (Decorative laminate/plywood) 20°C/20mins
Can also be used in a Radio frequency curing press (RF)
Equipment can be cleaned with warm or cold water whilst the adhesive
is still wet.
Always use Würth Web Spray products with suitable accessories
Step 3:
Carefully perform setup process:
1. Ensure the gun is fitted with the correct spray tip
2. Connect hose and gun to the canister
3. Open canister valve
Step 4:
For the ideal spray, hold the spray gun at a 90° angle to the surface approximately 4-6” away. Spray in long,
steady strokes releasing trigger with each change of direction, ensuring the spray pattern is overlapped by about
1”. TIP: Always give the edge a second coat, and it is best to coat the edges first to ensure a double coat.
Step 5:
Würth Web Spray Adhesive products are contact adhesives, ensure that both surfaces have been covered
achieving a 100% (20-30grams per square meter) coverage for best results.
Step 6:
Allow Würth Web Spray Adhesive to take up to 2 minutes before bonding, protect from contaminates such as dust
and moisture. Adhesive on each surface should be dry and nontransferable to touch.
Step 7:
Use a J Roller to eliminate air pockets.
Step 8:
Use a solvent cleaner to remove any overspray.
AFTER USE:
A) Do not turn off the valve or disconnect the hose if the canister still contains glue. For best results, leave the canister
in a ready-to-spray position for the next application.
B) Once your Würth Web Spray Canister is empty:
• Turn off the adhesive canister valve
• Bleed the hose of excess adhesive
• Dispose off the empty canister as per product label instructions
TROUBLE SHOOTING:
1. Gun will not spray: Is the valve turned on? Gun turned on? Blockage in gun?
Strip down and clean all parts in solvent cleaner.
When setting up a new system which includes a new tank, hose and gun it is advisable to run the hose and gun
without a tip initially to avoid blocking it. Only until the adhesive is seen to be coming through the gun and only
on new systems. If difficulties are encountered getting a new canister started always remove the spray tip FIRST to
check if adhesive is coming through the gun. Clean the tip and replace.
Gun sprays but a heavy weight of adhesives?
Has the canister been subjected to low temperatures? Bring the canister up to room temperature. Turn it upside
down and shake to agitate.
Blockage in hose? Gun and hose should be connected to a canister at all times. Failure to do so will result in the
adhesive drying in the hose and gun causing blockages.
2. Adhesive Failure? Würth Web Spray Adhesives are contact adhesives that work by bonding to themselves. It
is necessary for adhesive to be on both surfaces.
Before making the assumption that the adhesive has failed, it is important to consider the following points:
• Is there adhesive on both surfaces?
• Is there enough adhesive? 80-100% coverage of both surfaces?
• Were the substrates cold? Enough to produce “Bloom”?
• Was the canister or its environment cold? Cold canister will spray more gas and less adhesive giving low adhesive
coat weights.
• Was sufficient pressure applied to the piece to bring the two surfaces together? Würth Web Spray is a contact
adhesive and the adhesive must make contact to itself to form the bond. Large areas left open with low coat
weights are particularly susceptible to this problem.
• Were they suitable substrates? Whilst Würth Web Spray Adhesives will bond a wide variety of materials it is
important to test the substrate to ensure the product will work on your particular application.
3. Laminates Problems: Laminate zips off. Usually a result of a combination of insufficient adhesive being applied
and insufficient pressure applied during assembly. Dust contamination is another consideration .
Blisters. When assembled the piece looked fine but subsequently blisters appear. Often the results of insufficient
adhesives applied to one or both surfaces combined with insufficient pressure applied to the piece. Remember
adhesive should give 80-100% coverage to both surfaces. If the substrates are very absorbent a second coat is
required. Also if the substrates are impermeable it is possible to trap solvent inside which may also cause blistering.
4. Heat Resistance: Whilst Würth Web Spray Adhesives have a high level of heat resistance (up to 100°C) they
are not recommended for use on light boxes, radiator covers and other areas where a high level of heat resistance
is required.
