Dear Friends of Georgian Court University,

When future generations of Georgian Court University friends and 

alumni look back at the 2009–2010 academic year, they just might 

wonder how we made it through one of the most tumultuous economic 

times in our nation’s history. 

We did it with innovative thinking and creative partnerships. We worked 

together to balance resources and support students while still investing in 

new programs and pursuing bold initiatives. 

Tough times on Wall Street affect us all, but even in the face of a down 

economy, GCU experienced gains. 

On the business side, we welcomed the considerable talents of Suzanne Elliott, RSM, our new vice 

president for mission and business affairs. In academics, we proudly introduced one of our own, 

Evelyn Quinn, M.Ed., M.S.W., ’74, as our new chief academic officer. 

We launched seven new programs in early childhood P–3 education and secured $300,000 in 

state funding for a partnership between GCU and a local school district. New minors were added in 

several areas, and the new McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning, which offers non-credit classes for 

adult learners, has been a success. We even chartered a chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national 

leadership honor society. 

We were also awarded LEED Gold status for the Wellness Center, and we opened a newly renovated 

nursing skills lab in Hamilton Hall. 

And as you would expect, our students took their learning experiences on the road, traveling to places 

like Quito, Ecuador, and Chulucanas, Peru, to do volunteer work. Members of our CACC Champion 

lacrosse team also took their talents abroad as they competed in the 2010 Down Under Cup in Australia. 

Through prosperous times and rough patches, GCU remains true to the spirit of Catherine McAuley 

and the Mercy core values that inform every decision we make, every partnership we pursue, and 

every program we offer. Our commitment to cultivating informed, engaged, and exceptional leaders is 

as strong as ever, and we thank you for your unwavering support as you help fuel our vision of a 

brighter future. God continues to shower GCU with many blessings and we are grateful to you, our

Georgian Court University Year-End Highlights: 2009-2010 

. Developed and approved seven new versions of 

early childhood (P–3) education programs, enabling 

the university to meet the changing needs of the 

education workforce. 

. Granted a $293,000 renewal of Student Support 

Services funding (worth more than $1 million over 

the next five years) by the U.S. Department 

of Education. 

. Won the Lee Noel-Randi Levitz Retention 

Excellence Award for improvements in the freshman 

retention rate from 70 percent to 78 percent in one 

year, a success tied directly to the new GCU early 

warning system for students having difficulties 

and the new first-year experience survey that helps 

identify students likely to leave GCU. 

. Selected to participate in “Learning to Improve: 

A Study of Evidence-Based Improvement in Higher 

Education,” the National Survey of Student 

Engagement’s Institute for Effective Educational 

Practice project; GCU was chosen because the 

university’s NSSE results continue to show a pattern 

of improvement over time. 

. Awarded New Jersey’s $300,000 Improving 

Partnerships and Active Collaboration for Teaching 

(IMPACT) Grant, which funds GCU faculty work 

with Brick Township educators and supports ongoing 

efforts to increase the ranks of highly qualified social 

studies, English, and mathematics teachers. 

. Opened the new GCU-Meridian Health nursing 

skills lab in Hamilton Hall. 

. Named Evelyn Quinn, M.S.W., M.Ed., ’74 as GCU’s 

new provost following extensive interviews and 

research conducted by an outside search firm. 

. Provided volunteer assistance to families in Quito, 

Ecuador; Chulucanas, Peru; Biloxi, Mississippi; and 

Camden, New Jersey, through service learning and 

service-oriented travel. 

. Hosted Mercy Critical Concerns Week and engaged 

participants on a range of women’s issues.

. Won CACC championships in volleyball and lacrosse. 

. Sent five GCU Lions to compete in international 

lacrosse during the 2010 Down Under Cup in 

Melbourne, Australia. 

. Donated $1,500 raised by the Student Government 

Association to assist in the United Nations’ effort to 

educate African girls. 

. Developed the new, accelerated, Saturday 

(one-year) M.B.A. program. 

. Added new minors in sports management; dance 

therapy; graphic design; coaching women athletes; 

and exercise science, wellness and sports. Other 

academic additions included a new concentration in 

homeland security and five applied behavior analyst 

courses started in the Department of Psychology. 

. Started the B.S. in Health Information 

Management major (joint program with the 

University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). 

. Implemented N.J. Clean Energy Rebate-funded 

lighting retrofitting; additional sustainability efforts 

resulted in a 12 percent decrease in natural gas use 

and a 28 percent decrease in electricity consumption. 

. Awarded $50,000 in OceanFirst Bank scholarships 

designated for first-year students. 

. Awarded America’s Treasure Grant for $200,000; 

the special funding from the U.S. Department of the 

Interior will aid in preservation of GCU’s historic 

Mansion, beginning in 2011.

. Awarded a $40,000 grant from the National 

Fish and Wildlife Federation to support research 

and eradication of Asiatic sand sedge in select areas 

between Sandy Hook and Bay Head, New Jersey. 

. Awarded $188,100 in federal funding for the 

GCU Autism Training Institute; 159 local educators 

participated in specialized lectures, training sessions, 

and panel discussions. 

. A $1,000,000 bequest from Dorothy Jamin Marron ’36 

provided startup funds for the new campus entrance; 

the bequest honors the Class of 1936. 

. Completed the first phase of renovations to the 

McAuley Heritage Center. 

. Implemented online payment system for student 

billing and began issuing electronic bills to eliminate 

paper statements. 

. Implemented paperless online employee recruiting 

system to support sustainability and create easy 

access to applicant data. 

. Awarded LEED Gold Certification for Wellness Center. 

. Upgraded student Web site portal to allow for single 

sign-on access to pertinent information and services. 

. Became one of the first institutions of higher 

education in New Jersey to successfully complete the 

State Peer Review Process for security and to conduct 

a mandatory annual campus-wide lockdown drill. 

. Introduced the McAuley Institute for Lifelong 

Learning (MILL), giving adult learners access to 

college-level courses taught by experienced GCU 

faculty; the program has grown from two pilot 

courses in 2009 to 11 courses in 2010. 

. Attracted more than 21,000 guests to GCU 

conferences and special events, including the popular 

Biographies from The Court series, which consistently 

sold out. 

. Formed new partnerships that resulted in wellattended 

conferences for the New Jersey Coalition for 

Inclusive Education and New Jersey’s Girl Scouts. 

. Implemented social media strategy to attract 

new students and engage existing GCU students, 

faculty, staff, and alumni through Facebook, Twitter, 

YouTube, and LinkedIn. 

. Redesigned www.georgian.edu and launched 

the new GCU homepage, featuring a new look for 

the site, frequently updated content, slide show 

animation, integrated social media, user-friendly 

navigation, and interactive news articles. 

. Generated more than 10,770 column inches 

in magazine and newspaper media coverage, 

resulting in $475,000 in ad-equivalent dollars 

for FY2009–2010. 

. Recognized for creative excellence in marketing 

and communications; honors included more than 

10 awards from the Association of Marketing and 

Communication Professionals and the International 

Academy of the Visual Arts for the informational 

video and television spots, Web site redesign, and 

GCU Magazine. 

. Launched GCU Community News, a monthly 

e-newsletter that keeps upward of 3,500 GCU faculty, 

staff, and students informed about campus news 

and events.

Tough times on Wall Street plunged our country and 

New Jersey into one of the most tumultuous economic 

downturns in our nation’s history. In response to 

the severe market decline, and relatively flat tuition 

revenue, the university continued its long standing 

efforts of good stewardship and made adjustments 

continuously throughout the year to ensure a 

positive financial position. All schools, divisions, 

and departments helped the university achieve a 

positive bottom line through cost-cutting reductions of 

approximately $1.3 million. This is testimony to the 

cooperative sacrifices among all areas of the university. 

Despite the extraordinary challenges and the need 

to increase institutional aid to our students by 

$1.3 million over the 2008–2009 fiscal year, the 

university ended the last fiscal year with an operating 

budget surplus of $28,000. For the first time, the 

university withdrew endowment earnings made 

available under its spending policy in order to 

maintain a balanced budget, provide for cash 

needs, and end the year with an operating surplus. 

This distribution of earnings, which totaled 

$1,265,000, added to the $28,000, accounts for the 

increase in unrestricted net assets from operating 

activities of $1,293,700. 

Investment performance for the fiscal year regained 

$6.2 million of the previous year’s $8.2 million loss. 

The university takes a long view of its endowments 

and must balance current needs with the anticipated 

needs of future students. The spending from those funds 

cannot always meet the immediate demands and the 

utilization of the spending policy is revisited on an 

annual basis. 

Fiscal challenges in New Jersey contributed to an 

extremely difficult budget process. With a new 

governor and the state budget facing huge deficits, 

independent higher education faced its largest threat 

in history. 

At risk for the independent sector was the total 

elimination of direct state aid provided to the 

14 independent colleges; a reduction in the Tuition Aid 

Grant (TAG) program of state aid, which would reduce 

the amount for private colleges to the level of the state 

institutions; and cuts to the Educational Opportunity 

Fund (EOF) for the state’s neediest students. Through 

an organized lobbying campaign by the independent 

sector, $1.7 million was added to the TAG program 

for FY2010 and $1.3 million was restored to the EOF 

program, but all state aid to independent colleges was 

eliminated. For Georgian Court University, this results 

in a loss of revenue of more than $1 million.

College Fund of New Jersey. 

Begun in 1953, the fund makes a 

single, united annual request to 

corporations and foundations on 

behalf of the 14 member colleges. 

For 55 years, the fund has continued 

to secure corporate financial 

support for the state’s independent 

colleges and to promote a greater 

understanding of the importance 

of maintaining the opportunity 

for choice between public and 

private education. 

The Independent College Fund 

of New Jersey represents all of 

the state’s fully accredited, 

privately controlled colleges 

and universities, except those 

that are engaged primarily in 

religious studies.

although a number are 

designated to specific

Scholarships for All 

Meet Melania Zandomenego, a 28-year-old married 

mom of three. One would think that having 

three young children at home would be enough of 

a challenge for anyone, but Melania is also a 

full-time Georgian Court senior working on a 

degree in elementary education and mathematics. 

Most nontraditional students, like Melania, face 

enough challenges returning to school without 

affordability adding to their burden. Georgian Court 

offers scholarships for all students to help them 

achieve their goals. Melania herself has received 

the Ocean County Women’s Association (OCWA) 

Scholarship for two years in a row—a scholarship 

specifically created for women from Ocean County 

who are re-entering the education field for the 

purpose of improving their earning capabilities. 

jane Lee, OCWA treasurer, says that her ninemember 

organization is thrilled to have been 

able to keep giving to the women who need it. 

And since sponsored scholarships start at a minimum 

annual investment of only $1,000, even small 

organizations and individuals can afford to start one.
