<strong>Georgian</strong> <strong>Court</strong> <strong>University</strong> Year-End Highlights: 2009-2010<br />

. Developed and approved seven new versions <strong>of</strong><br />

early childhood (P–3) education programs, enabling<br />

the university to meet the changing needs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

education workforce.<br />

. Granted a $293,000 renewal <strong>of</strong> Student Support<br />

Services funding (worth more than $1 million over<br />

the next five years) by the U.S. Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Education.<br />

. Won the Lee Noel-Randi Levitz Retention<br />

Excellence Award for improvements in the freshman<br />

retention rate from 70 percent to 78 percent in one<br />

year, a success tied directly to the new GCU early<br />

warning system for students having difficulties<br />

and the new first-year experience survey that helps<br />

identify students likely to leave GCU.<br />

. Selected to participate in “Learning to Improve:<br />

A Study <strong>of</strong> Evidence-Based Improvement in Higher<br />

Education,” the National Survey <strong>of</strong> Student<br />

Engagement’s Institute for Effective Educational<br />

Practice project; GCU was chosen because the<br />

university’s NSSE results continue to show a pattern<br />

<strong>of</strong> improvement over time.<br />

. Awarded New Jersey’s $300,000 Improving<br />

Partnerships and Active Collaboration for Teaching<br />

(IMPACT) Grant, which funds GCU faculty work<br />

with Brick Township educators and supports ongoing<br />

efforts to increase the ranks <strong>of</strong> highly qualified social<br />

studies, English, and mathematics teachers.<br />

. Opened the new GCU-Meridian Health nursing<br />

skills lab in Hamilton Hall.<br />

. Named Evelyn Quinn, M.S.W., M.Ed., ’74 as GCU’s<br />

new provost following extensive interviews and<br />

research conducted by an outside search firm.<br />

. Provided volunteer assistance to families in Quito,<br />

Ecuador; Chulucanas, Peru; Biloxi, Mississippi; and<br />

Camden, New Jersey, through service learning and<br />

service-oriented travel.<br />

. Hosted Mercy Critical Concerns Week and engaged<br />

participants on a range <strong>of</strong> women’s issues.<br />

. Won CACC championships in volleyball and lacrosse.<br />

. Sent five GCU Lions to compete in international<br />

lacrosse during the 2010 Down Under Cup in<br />

Melbourne, Australia.<br />

. Donated $1,500 raised by the Student Government<br />

Association to assist in the United Nations’ effort to<br />

educate African girls.<br />

. Developed the new, accelerated, Saturday<br />

(one-year) M.B.A. program.<br />

. Added new minors in sports management; dance<br />

therapy; graphic design; coaching women athletes;<br />

and exercise science, wellness and sports. Other<br />

academic additions included a new concentration in<br />

homeland security and five applied behavior analyst<br />

courses started in the Department <strong>of</strong> Psychology.<br />

. Started the B.S. in Health Information<br />

Management major (joint program with the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine and Dentistry <strong>of</strong> New Jersey).<br />

. Implemented N.J. Clean Energy Rebate-funded<br />

lighting retr<strong>of</strong>itting; additional sustainability efforts<br />

resulted in a 12 percent decrease in natural gas use<br />

and a 28 percent decrease in electricity consumption.<br />

. Awarded $50,000 in OceanFirst Bank scholarships<br />

designated for first-year students.<br />

. Awarded America’s Treasure Grant for $200,000;<br />

the special funding from the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Interior will aid in preservation <strong>of</strong> GCU’s historic<br />

Mansion, beginning in 2011.
