Georgian Court University Year-End Highlights: 2009-2010
. Developed and approved seven new versions of
early childhood (P–3) education programs, enabling
the university to meet the changing needs of the
education workforce.
. Granted a $293,000 renewal of Student Support
Services funding (worth more than $1 million over
the next five years) by the U.S. Department
of Education.
. Won the Lee Noel-Randi Levitz Retention
Excellence Award for improvements in the freshman
retention rate from 70 percent to 78 percent in one
year, a success tied directly to the new GCU early
warning system for students having difficulties
and the new first-year experience survey that helps
identify students likely to leave GCU.
. Selected to participate in “Learning to Improve:
A Study of Evidence-Based Improvement in Higher
Education,” the National Survey of Student
Engagement’s Institute for Effective Educational
Practice project; GCU was chosen because the
university’s NSSE results continue to show a pattern
of improvement over time.
. Awarded New Jersey’s $300,000 Improving
Partnerships and Active Collaboration for Teaching
(IMPACT) Grant, which funds GCU faculty work
with Brick Township educators and supports ongoing
efforts to increase the ranks of highly qualified social
studies, English, and mathematics teachers.
. Opened the new GCU-Meridian Health nursing
skills lab in Hamilton Hall.
. Named Evelyn Quinn, M.S.W., M.Ed., ’74 as GCU’s
new provost following extensive interviews and
research conducted by an outside search firm.
. Provided volunteer assistance to families in Quito,
Ecuador; Chulucanas, Peru; Biloxi, Mississippi; and
Camden, New Jersey, through service learning and
service-oriented travel.
. Hosted Mercy Critical Concerns Week and engaged
participants on a range of women’s issues.

. Won CACC championships in volleyball and lacrosse.
. Sent five GCU Lions to compete in international
lacrosse during the 2010 Down Under Cup in
Melbourne, Australia.
. Donated $1,500 raised by the Student Government
Association to assist in the United Nations’ effort to
educate African girls.
. Developed the new, accelerated, Saturday
(one-year) M.B.A. program.
. Added new minors in sports management; dance
therapy; graphic design; coaching women athletes;
and exercise science, wellness and sports. Other
academic additions included a new concentration in
homeland security and five applied behavior analyst
courses started in the Department of Psychology.
. Started the B.S. in Health Information
Management major (joint program with the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey).
. Implemented N.J. Clean Energy Rebate-funded
lighting retrofitting; additional sustainability efforts
resulted in a 12 percent decrease in natural gas use
and a 28 percent decrease in electricity consumption.
. Awarded $50,000 in OceanFirst Bank scholarships
designated for first-year students.
. Awarded America’s Treasure Grant for $200,000;
the special funding from the U.S. Department of the
Interior will aid in preservation of GCU’s historic
Mansion, beginning in 2011.
