This issue the very resourceful Wesley Caswell tells of how he made his own crutches. Please note that as The Bulletin is made available on the internet, your letters may be read by a wider audience. If you would prefer for your name to be withheld, please let us know when you write. your letters I really do ‘do it myself’! I got polio way back in 1956 and when I started walking again with crutches and callipers, I used the old, long, up-tothe-armpit wooden crutches. It must have been about the 1970s when I went to get a new pair, and was told they didn’t do that style any more. They showed me something ‘new’ that I immediately disliked. I said ‘no thanks’ and took the old pair home. I thought it couldn’t be too difficult to make some myself, so off I went to Woolworths and bought four broom handles. These I joined securely at the bottom with long screws, and the ‘handles’ came from a cycle shop with wood through the centre and firmly fixed at the correct height. The tops were made from a piece of oak I had, and were covered with vinyl, which can be obtained at many markets etc. I then stained the finished crutches a ‘nice’ colour, and put about four coats of yatch varnish on top. Hey presto, I had a brand new pair of crutches, which took about a week to make. All my crutches are at least 25 years old, as I strip and revarnish every few years. I have three pairs – one ‘best’ for weddings/funerals/ holidays, an everyday pair, and one for gardening/painting etc. I often get comments when I am out from people saying they haven’t seen that type of crutch before. Only last week while visiting someone in hospital, a nurse said “I haven’t seen crutches like those for a long time”, and when told I made them myself, she was rather surprised!
