anch & regional news Queen’s Diamond Jubilee On Saturday 6 June, 30 members and friends of the North West Kent Branch celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at their monthly social. The room had been decorated before the members arrived, who came with contributions to a lovely buffet. Everyone had been asked to wear red, white and blue. Before tea, there was plenty of laughter as several games were played. By then, everyone was ready to enjoy the delicious food. This was followed by our President, George Penny, who proposed a toast to the Queen. He, and the Branch Chairman, Marion Webb, then cut the cake. Nottingham Crusader boat trip When: 25 May 2012 Where: Colwick Park Marina What time: 2pm – 5pm Objective: To take members out on a trip and to socialise The trip can be summed up in one word – AWESOME!! The weather was right; the boat was fantastic. We couldn’t have chosen a better day weather-wise. The crew were great. The facilities included an accessible toilet, a kitchen equipped with hot water, kettle and microwave. Tea and coffee were provided. We took with us some cakes and biscuits, which everyone enjoyed. Aberdeen Branch raises £1,300 at ‘Feein’ Market’ The Aberdeen Branch this year decided to take a stall at a local event ‘the Feein’ Market’ that is held every year in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. This year it fell on the same weekend as the Queen’s Jubilee so all stallholders were asked to decorate their stalls with red, white and blue. It did gives us a little more extra work but it was worth it in the end. We decided to hold a Grand Draw and with the help of companies in Aberdeen who donated cheques or prizes, we had a television as first prize. Other prizes including a night’s B&B in a hotel, dinner for two, wine, a voucher for hairstyling and many more. We did extremely well and raised £1,300. The original Feein’ Market was a “Hiring Fair” for the local farm labourers. In the 18th and 19th centuries every May and November the local farm workers would gather in the Market Square to agree terms for the coming six to 12 months. The contract was sealed with a “fee”, and with this the employee often celebrated at the pleasures of the Market itself. The Modern Feein’ Market was brought to life again in 1973 and is held on the first Saturday in June. Traditionally, all stallholders and participants dress in Edwardian or Victorian dress. The festivities include traditional and modern entertainment, food and drinks stalls, as well as market stalls. Jenny Jones, Chair Are you interested in Branches/Groups?
