Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,<br />
Did you ever wonder what inspires people to step forward and lend a helping<br />
hand, to volunteer or give their financial support to an organization? What<br />
moves them to act in such a caring manner? I believe they are responding<br />
to Jesus’ call to serve by looking upon others as true sisters and brothers by<br />
loving as our God loves.<br />

In his Encyclical Letter, Deus Caritas Est<br />
(God is Love), Pope Benedict XVI speaks<br />
to us all as members of the universal<br />
Church, and as men and women of good<br />
will. “Love of neighbor, grounded in the love<br />
of God, is first and foremost a responsibility<br />
for each individual of the faithful. Only my<br />
readiness to encounter my neighbor and to<br />
show him love makes me sensitive to God<br />
as well. Only if I serve my neighbor can my<br />
eyes be opened to what God does for me and<br />
how much he loves me.”<br />
How clearly defined �e Call to Serve is!<br />
We can better grasp God’s unconditional<br />
and unwavering love for us when we<br />
free ourselves to respond lovingly to our<br />
neighbors. I’m talking about neighbors across town or in a different county,<br />
neighbors of a different faith or nationality, neighbors who are poor, forgotten<br />
or ignored. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee reaches out<br />
to neighbors in need and the pages of this <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> will share how this<br />
important mission is accomplished.<br />
On behalf of Catholic Charities’ staff and Board of Trustees, I extend<br />
heartfelt thanks to the thousands of individuals, parishes, organizations,<br />
foundations and corporations that support the vital work of this agency.<br />
May the love of our Savior be ever-present in your life and may you continue<br />

Responding to Ever-Changing Needs<br />
�e call to serve others in need is explicitly stated in Catholic Charities’ mission<br />
statement, and has acted as the guiding principle behind the<br />
programs and assistance provided by the agency since 1920.<br />
�is annual report reflects Catholic Charities’ activities,<br />
advocacy and service during <strong>2007</strong>. Some services have been<br />
provided by the agency since its inception; other programs<br />
are newly launched, responding to the ever-changing needs of<br />
clients. Whether long-standing or freshly initiated, all of the<br />
agency’s services are expanding and re-orienting their goals -beyond<br />
meeting basic needs towards transforming lives.<br />
�ese challenging times, and social justice, call for no less.<br />
With the increasing number of hard-working persons living on the margins of<br />
poverty, Catholic Charities is positioning itself to be more accessible and efficient<br />
in serving poor and vulnerable populations while striving to more nimbly and<br />
appropriately respond to emerging needs and changing demographics.<br />
But a 187-employee agency cannot alone provide services for the whole ten-county<br />
Archdiocese; it needs to ask others to contribute to the mission. Catholic Charities<br />
is grateful for those who have served clients and the agency itself -- program<br />
volunteers and companions, Board members, student interns, in-kind and financial<br />
benefactors, and all those who pray for clients, staff and the agency.<br />

if I but call your name?”<br />
�ese words begin one of my favorite hymns, “�e<br />
Summons”, written by John L. Bell in 1987.<br />
�e need to answer the “�e Call,” embedded throughout<br />
the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching,<br />
is embraced at Catholic Charities as our core values.<br />
One of those principles,“Call to Family, Community, and<br />
Participation” seems especially relevant to our daily work.<br />
Our programs serve many in need, with a special focus<br />
�at being said, we cannot continue this much-needed work unless each of you<br />
continues to answer “�e Call.” And everyone has the means to do just that,<br />
because the call can be answered in so many ways.<br />
I ask first that you pray for those in need, for the work of the Church and Catholic<br />
Charities in ministering to those in need, and for all those who live the principles<br />
of Catholic Social Teaching through their dedicated service to others.<br />
Secondly, I ask that you answer the call in your daily lives by serving those in need<br />
among your family, parish, local and global community.<br />
Finally, because God has blessed us with great abundance, I ask that you support<br />
the work of Catholic Charities financially. �e need is limitless, and the ability of<br />
Catholic Charities to serve those in need is proportional to your willingness to help.<br />
�ankyouforyourpastgenerosity,yourprayersandyourownactionsin<br />
service to others.
<strong>2007</strong> Agency Highlights<br />
Catholic Charities was on the move during <strong>2007</strong>. Several of Catholic Charities’<br />
eighteen service locations were moved to parishes for greater client accessibility and<br />
to advance Catholic Charities’ mission within parishes. New locations include:<br />
St. Patrick, Milwaukee; Immaculate Conception, West Bend; St. Benedict, Fontana;<br />
and St. Mark, Kenosha.<br />
During <strong>2007</strong>, 37 families from Burma and Somalia came to Wisconsin as part<br />
of Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement Program. �ese families, resettled<br />
by caseworkers, are assisted for up to five years with basic needs, education and<br />
employment.<br />
Catholic Charities continued to provide crucial coordination of the Archdiocese’s<br />
project, Rebuilding Lives, Restoring Hope. Staff prepared parish volunteers and served<br />
as a vital conduit for aid to Hurricane Katrina survivors in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.<br />
In August, <strong>2007</strong>, a Mass of �anksgiving was held at St. Dominic, Brookfield to<br />
honor the work of Archdiocesan parishioner volunteers and Catholic Charities.<br />
Coinciding with National Caregiver Month in November, Catholic Charities<br />
celebrated the 10 th anniversary of its Milwaukee Adult Day Care facility. �e<br />
agency serves nearly 100 families weekly through its three Adult Day Programs in<br />
Milwaukee and New Berlin; and its Best of Friends Social Respite Club at St. John<br />
Vianney, Brookfield.<br />
During November and December, Catholic Charities coordinated and distributed inkind<br />
gifts from parishes, businesses, volunteer groups, school classes, individuals and<br />
families wanting to share their blessings. Nearly 600 individuals in the Archdiocese<br />
received gifts of clothing, diapers, hats, mittens, coats, boots, toys, books and grocery<br />
cards for the Christmas and winter seasons.<br />
A Zero-Interest Revolving Loan Fund, launched in <strong>2007</strong>, assists people in crisis with<br />
an interest free loan, consumer education and referrals for appropriate services. �is<br />
fund model addresses immediate need, builds client credit histories, allows persons to<br />
more comfortably ask for assistance, and gives clients a sense that through repayment<br />
they are assisting future clients in need. During <strong>2007</strong>, 73% of the loan applications<br />
were fulfilled with zero-interest loans. Seed money for this program was provided by<br />
an anonymous donor.<br />
In August, eleven novices in the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin began formation<br />
studies in Burlington, Wisconsin. Catholic Charities accepted the formation<br />
director’s invitation to be part of the service component of their formation studies.<br />
One day per week each of the eleven brothers perform a variety of services for the<br />
clients of Catholic Charities. �e service opportunities coordinated by Catholic<br />
Charities benefited clients directly, and will benefit the greater Church as these men<br />
move forward in their vocations.<br />

disabled. �e programs operate from these philosophical premises: to uphold the<br />
dignity of the individual and to ensure that clients maintain their independence.<br />
