From the Editor’s Desk
Periodical Bulletin
The other day I overheard a resplendent fresher saying ‘This college has
life’...and certitudes of our past suddenly interspersed with the imperatives and embellishments
of the present. The ambience seems to have fetched all the fillip for the
students to breathe renaissance. The hustle-bustle of the students is echoed across
each and every corridor, thanks to the collective dexterity and creative suppleness
of the administration and the student community. Professionalism seems to materialize
the figments of the joyful imagination of the sagacious people who have secured
a place in the top notch companies and freshers seem to have high expectations
tinged with vigor and resolution to propel the existing trends.
It’s a matter of great pride to have a genre breaker, Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam,
as the visiting professor to the university. This very honor and accomplishment
prognosticates how close we are to make a mark of our intellectual legacy over the
world of technocrats!
The college experienced a wave of conjunction at the alumni meet, Samanvay,
where people of different ideas and experiences but a common vision gathered
for an encomium to their alma mater. Even the digerati seem to be in a state of gaiety
awaiting the inauguration of Central Computing Facilities centre. These advancements
are undoubtedly going to be a head start for the students of College of
Technology.
The college speaks of a revolution every new day and it feels good to see
students putting their frantic attempts to resuscitate this revolution every time. Apparently
the veritable exhilaration amongst the students is genuinely vindicated by
the much awaited cultural fest Accolade (being organized at a larger scale this
time).
The students have also been persistently lobbying for a college library and we
wish to have a Counseling Cell where students can approach the administration directly
to address their concerns. Also, if the students are given more freedom to
avail facilities like Wi-Fi, working in laboratories etc. even after the college hours,
it would open new avenues for them to undertake more research projects and hence
come at par with or even excel the technocrats of global fame.
Techniche; the third issue, could not have been possible without the support
and contribution of the students, administration and the faculty. We are deeply indebted
to all of them and at the same time, promise to give new dimensions to the
magazine and include more articles next time. We expect the students to participate
with even more verve for the forthcoming editions of Techniche.
We are thankful to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. P. L. Gautam, for guiding and
blessing us this time. We are also grateful to the Dean, College of Technology,
Dr. M. P. Singh for his constant support throughout the journey and to Dr. N. K.
Sharma and Dr. R. C. S. Mehta for their contributions to the magazine.
The road to virtues undulates pleasantly before us. All we need to do is walk
down and leave the trail for generations to follow. To build may be a slow and laborious
task of years but journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. So,
let’s mark our place under the sun...
A WORD FROM THE CHAIR
I am happy to note that the Engineering Society of this university is bringing out the third issue of
the biannual magazine Techniche. The members of its Editorial board deserve our thanks.
TECH ENVISION
TECH ENVISION
Students' magazine in an institution of learning has a major role to play
in creating a democratic platform that is so essential for an effective
teaching-learning process. Firstly, it encourages the students to pen
down their views laced with constructive suggestions for further improvement
of that process. Secondly, the magazine allows the students
to look at the world beyond the curricula.
Technology is changing at an unimaginable pace since the middle of the
last century. No engineering college worth its name can afford not to
adapt to that pace. Quality has become synonymous to a strong motivation to embrace change.
I hope that Techniche will continue to pursue these goals.
COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
Communication is as vital to life as oxygen. Like the circulatory system that supports an organism,
the communication system supports the needs of society. It is necessary to each individual for
physical safety, mental development and emotional well being. The modern communication facilities
have given its users comfort and luxury apart from benefiting them. But higher the benefits and
luxury of the system, higher is its complexities.
Ten points designed to help and improve communication effectively are:
• Be sure of what you wish to communicate and why
• Be clear in use of language
• Be mindful while you communicate
• Take the opportunity, when it arises, to convey
something of help or value
• Provide the right climate
• Listen attentively
• Remember that communication is a two-way process
• Be sure your actions support your communication
• Communicate with humor to relieve tensions
• Provide communication training
Some facts about Communication:
MENTORS’ COLUMN
• Communication plays a vital role in creating cooperation and coordination among various
hierarchical levels in the set-up of the organization.
• Lack of communication creates confrontation which may result in disruption of normal
working.
• Communication necessarily implies a means to understand and know each other.
• The increased cost effectiveness of data processing systems led to a rapid expansion of
the computer industry which in turn had immense impact on all industrial and commercial
sectors.
• It is a known fact that dissemination of information becomes all the more easier with
growth of communication as a result of technological advances.
The COT has witnessed numerous changes with the changing Deans, faculty and the most integral
part - its students. The changes have throughout been aimed at the advancement of technology
relevant to present needs. To propagate this dream of making the students highly technology oriented,
former President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
graced the occasion of inauguration of the
newly constructed Electronics & Communication
Engineering department on 11 th August.
This day was marked as a heyday by
the young and the old including the students
and the professors. Amidst high security and
followed by venerable dignitaries, his cognizant
looks offered a rare sight for which
every heart yearned to catch a glimpse of.
The enthusiasm seen amongst the masses
was conspicuous to one and all. Despite the
scorching heat, the sweating crowd hit in a
large number resulting in the jam-packed
Gandhi auditorium followed by an incessant
applause when Dr. Kalam appeared on the stage. When the audience stood up for the national anthem,
it seemed as though each word originated from their soul.
Dr. Kalam discussed the empowerment of agriculture and convergence of technologies. He suggested
combining nanotechnology, information and communication technology and biotechnology to
evolve a new science called ‘intelligent bioscience’ which would lead to a disease-free and a more
compatible human habitat with longevity and high human capacities. He also elaborated his plans for
the convergence of various technologies and for taking India to the pinnacle of progress.
We are proud to have a great person who enthuses as well as champions the cause for exceptional
work of advancement in science and public services of highest order. We are eagerly looking
forward to his visit as the visiting faculty.

SNAPSHOTS FROM HELL
An M.B.A. degree is perhaps the most
sought after career option in the contemporary
scenario. M.B.A.
has a latent appeal,
promises hefty pay
packets, makes life
glamorous and the
number of people
joining the bandwagon
seems to
escalate each year...
For those of you
who are lost in the
M.B.A. reverie,
‘Snapshots From
Hell’ is one book
which you can’t afford to miss. The book chronicles
the story of Peter Robinson, a former speech
writer for President Reagan, who, inspired by the
private sector, grew determined to make a clean
break from the public sector and start out fresh in
the private sector. He maintained a journal of his
day to day experiences at Stanford, which fin-
ally took the shape of this book. The writer tells
how eclectic the batch of students in a B-school is.
You will find people from arts, science, and economics.
Do I even need to mention engineering?
We are in the biggest numbers folks!!
The book helps the readers in imbibing the
gist of business education. It elicits out how ‘Case
Studies’ form the background of M.B.A. course
and has succeeded in capturing the exam time
frenzy to a great effect.
The writing style is simply wonderful,
compulsively readable like a novel and clearly
brings out the lesson to learn from Robinson’s
odyssey. It accomplishes what it sets out to do and
tells the world the perils of an M.B.A. degree in
such a wonderful way that it’s hard not to get enthusiastic
about it. Guys, if you are toying with
this idea of getting an M.B.A. degree in the near
future, this book is for you. ‘Fabulous…it’s fun,
it’s weird, you will thoroughly enjoy it’.
ENGINEERING: PRODUCING
THINKERS OR JUST GRADUATES ?
ARE WE REALLY
“THE STUDENTS OF CHANGE”?
The changes that the college has witnessed
over the recent years bear a testimony to the fact
that we are the students of change. The number
of students indulging in technical and research
work has been increasing steadily. Colosseum,
Accolade and all other events that we have successfully
organized on our own with little succor
from the university, rightly corroborate our
competency. The amount of thought process that
goes into each event is an arduous task indeed.
Despite lack of various resources, our momentum
to do something captivating has always enthused
us to think out of the box. Our ability to
rescue ourselves in dire circumstances proves
our mental acumen.
VIEW
Imagination rules the world! How can we
say that we are not thinkers when we possess a
vast knowledge and profundity for innovation.
Innovation in the advancements is reflected in
the work of our alumni, pioneering in technological
advancement in India and abroad.
It is reflected when we organize events
like Ranbhumi and Iconoclasm in Colosseum.
We have always had the capacity to dream big
but we have learnt bringing dreams to reality
with the supervision and guidance of the seniors
and our cerebral faculty. Engineering has indeed
inculcated a new prudence towards novelty and
excellence and thus we stand as forerunners
with a dash of change!
A graduate for me is someone who can at
The question ‘Why are we not able to produce
Graduates/Thinkers’ has just one answer: Insufficiencies
in the system consisting of Faculty,
Facility along with its Functionality. In this ever
changing technological world, most Professors
dictate their age old notes whose Xerox copy
comes in the exam. Result: confirmation of the
original thought, ‘don’t THINK’. Let’s touch
just two basic modern criteria of
‘thinking’...Internet & Laboratories. Last time
they worked properly was when you were born.
Money spent on unearthing the foundation area
in front of PCT every 6 months & again renovating
it could have been spent to improve the
condition of the labs.
COUNTERVIEW
One can never say that there are no real
technocrat-thinkers amongst us, but their development
can not be attributed to the existing educational
system of our college. Internal assessments
and the restriction of question papers to
the notes of the instructor thrill the students to
go for the so-called ‘one night fights’. This hinders
the development of thinking ability of the
students, henceforth their condition becomes
similar to a lion which gets its prey without
striving hard for it. Here, complacency overwhelms
your revolutionary conscience and finally
you are transformed into a ‘True Pantnagarite’.
Rather, specifically, to a ‘Fake Technocrat’.
If
R=Student Teacher Relationship
C=Course Span
Is R= f (C) ??
Right from the beginning of the civilization,
student-teacher relationship has been highly
venerated. But, with the remission towards
interpersonal relationships, flagging moral values
and contemptuousness of the avant-garde, the
future of this sacred Guru-Shishya bond has
begun to dwindle. The times have changed and
the liberal views of students have made this relation
a mere formality.
The real concern of the students is to fetch
marks rather than gaining the sound knowledge
of the subject. This tendency leads to the lack of
communication between the teachers and the students.
The student-teacher relationship has been
limited to the course curriculum only.
The students even refuse to recognize
teachers outside the college campus or after the
culmination of the semester. It clearly insinuates
that the subject is of higher priority, not the
VIEW
teacher.
Unfortunately, the students fail to
acknowledge the sacrifices that teachers make for
them. It really feels awful when students create
indiscipline in the class after the teacher has
spent hours preparing for the contents of the lecture.
Such situations, instances and behavior on
the part of the students also lead to feeling of repugnance
at the teachers’ end. Hence, this marks
the onset of the deterioration of this pious
relationship. Thus, in the present scenario, student-
teacher relationship seems to depend on the
course span.
In my thirty eight years of teaching, I have
taught studious, naughty as well as extremely
reluctant students belonging to different backgrounds
and having altogether different ambitions
in life. With the passage of time, students
come and go and what remains is the college
and the faculty.
As a student, I was inspired by my teachers’
indomitable dedication to hone the young
minds, so I chose to tread their path. The
classes, these days, have been shifted from
shadow of trees to the concrete walls and the
imposed discipline of the yesteryears has given
way to liberalization. Though the outlook of our
relation might have changed owing to a ‘liberal
lifestyle’, yet the core feelings of mutual understanding
remain the same.
My students have always lived up to my
their acumen in renowned universities
both, in India and abroad while many others are
TECH-VISTA
Right from the very first day when a farmer
thinks of preparing his fields for producing food,
to the well packed and sealed food products which
we pick up from a food bazaar (or a mall) in our
vicinity, Agricultural Engineers
play the most important
role of maximizing the
output by economical and
optimum use of conventional
resources like water
and cultivable land. Our
role becomes more prominent
in the present scenario
where the cultivable
land is deteriorating day by day.
Talking about the opportunities which an
Agricultural Engineer can avail, farm mechanization
is one of the solutions to add precision and
quality to the farm products. This opens a lot of
avenues in Tractor, Combine Harvesters, Agricultural
section with utmost privilege.
Food Processing and Dairy sectors are also
sprawling with the involvement of big players like
Reliance, ITC, HUL, Nestle, to name a few. They
indeed open a plethora of opportunities for us.
As far as higher education is concerned,
many well-known universities like Purdue University,
UIUC, Cornell University, Iowa State University
provide many opportunities for Agricultural
The phrase “imagin-eering” rightly describes
the essence of Civil Engineering- one of
the oldest engineering disciplines which forms
the backbone of any economy. This involves meticulous
planning, designing and execution of
structural works. A Civil Engineer deals with a
variety of structures such as roads, highways,
bridges, ports, dams, power plants etc. which
offer multitude of challenging career opportunities.
The planning includes site investigation and
creating solutions to the complications that may
arise during the execution of a project. Execution
involves coordination amongst labors, contractors
and government officials to facilitate proper
management of resources. At the same time, civil
engineers are also involved in the maintenance
of these projects.
The growth of private construction
firms in the recent past has created abundant opportunities
for civil engineering professionals.
The recent blow to the interest rate for housing
loans and advent of real estate sector has given
thrust to constructions and created further demand
for Civil Engineers. Mega projects of national
significance like Bharat Nirmaan, Golden
Quadrilateral, Northeast Express Highway, Jawaharlal
Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission
and much-awaited national river linking project
are all set to create bountiful
opportunities in the
construction sector. According
to an industry
ENGINEERING
Computers have a ubiquitous presence in day to
day life and their importance just cannot be measured
in words… With the tremendous rate of growth and
advancement, every new day dawns upon us with a
new challenge to face, a better technique to come up
with, a more advanced need to satisfy and with all this
comes Computer Engineering and the major role it has
to play.
In today’s world there is a competition to develop
and learn new things. Computers have come
across a series of developments, from the old mainframes,
microcomputers, minicomputers, personal
computers to the presently used Laptops. With AMD
and dual-core processors already in wide use everywhere,
Software firms are continuously in search of
new processor technologies with better performance
and speed.
Artificial Intelligence is one field which has
great scope in future. Development in this field would
make computers operate just by speaking to them, i.e.
no special computer languages to instruct them. Grid
Computing, Ubiquitous Computing, Quantum Computing,
etc. are also some important fields which
would provide ample opportunities. Researches are
going on in the field of quantum computing in the
University of Michigan and several advances are being
made to develop ultra-fast computers. Apart from
these fields, Biometrics, Embedded Computing, and
Networking would be excellent
work areas for Computer
Engineers. In fact, owing to
the wide variety of applications,
innumerable career opportunities
are available for
newcomers. Perhaps, this is
what makes Computer Engineering
one of the most
sought after branches nowadays.
Convener, Interface
Electrical Engineering can be graded as paterfamilias
to servo control, instrumentation, high voltage
engineering and more. With an undergraduate degree in
Electrical Engineering, one can opt either for higher
studies or job directly.
Apart from qualifying
GATE or IES examinations
which no doubt offer lucrative
career prospects, various avenues
that an electrical engineer
can explore exists as engineers
involved in the field of Measurement
& Instrumentation
(fiber optic transducers, digital transducers, microprocessor
applications, data transmission and telemetry),
Design and Protection engineers for instruments, equipments
and power grids projects, engineers for optimization
and automation of electric drives (convertors, invertors,
rectifiers, controllers etc.). Wireless transmission
of electricity and application of artificial intelligence
to power systems are other novel concepts an
engineer can probe into. An Electrical Engineer can
serve defence forces wherein the Navy needs Electrotechnical
officers or Radio Electronic Officers responsible
for all communications from ship to shore and ship
to ship via various communication channels including
satellites and Engineer officers, who maintain and operate
all the machines and equipment, while Army and
Air Force require them for servo-controlled sighting
and tracking system.
The current trend is to outsource product development
services, R&D services, marketing research as
well as analytical services. The contribution of electrical
engineers as scientists and teachers goes unsaid.
Though antediluvian, this is a highly evolving and
dynamic entity offering carte blanche to tyro engineers
and those interested in higher studies.
researches have brought
the astounding fields like nanotechnology, optical fibre
communication, digitalization and many more from
research literature to practical realization.
Complete systems now appear on wafers thousands
of times smaller than the single elements of earlier
networks. Integrated circuits now have several million
transistors in an area no larger than a thumbnail.
Graduation from Electronics & Communication
Engineering opens up many avenues in multiple fields
for the same. Be it in the software industry where one
can be an integral part of extensive study of techniques
like VHDL, spintronics, quantum dots & others or with
the study of mobile & satellite communication, wireless
technology, one can even go for organizations like
ISRO, DRDO & NASA. The options are ample even in
the hardware industry such as in BEL, BSNL, and ST
Electronics. A graduate in this branch can also opt for
higher studies through GATE, GRE, CAT, etc or even
take Civil Services and Indian Engineering Services
examinations.
Electronics & Communication Engineering
graduates teeming with such technologies make this
world appear smaller and connected.
Final year, Electronika
In future, computing will be embedded in everyday
appliances. Digital-tagging being developed would
make the traditional ID and credit cards futile – the implanted
chip would simply need to be scanned into a
computer. Another example of modern methods is of
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) which involves
insertion of RFID tags into a variety of products. Passers-by
can, for example, point a mobile phone towards a
poster or advertisement and download dates, and website
or contact details.
Government officers will soon use e-mail facility
for communicating their progress to their State or Central
headquarters. Once the districts are linked to state
HQs by high speed data transfer connectivity, it will
become imperative to connect the computers installed
in different government offices forming a local area
network (LAN). It is expected that on the pattern of the
popularity of mobile communication devices and hand
held or portable notebooks, the computers with wireless
connectivity will also become ubiquitous amongst senior
officers, who will have constant access to the data
stored in the servers installed in their offices with voice
communication, e-mail facility etc. These developments
in combination with internet technologies will soon lead
to e-governance.
The most vital area of
growth after desktop publishing
(DTP) is e-
commerce. Multi-national
institutes in this field play
a great role in specialized
training. IT will also be
used in the entertainment
industry after suitable
infrastructure is available at reasonable costs in the
market. Apart from these, IT will also lead to integration
of infrastructure from tight to loose, from scarcity
to abundance and to virtualization of hardware, software
and business processes.
ENGINEERING
PRODUCTION
ENGINEERING
“Five millennia and four centuries ago, our forefathers
brought forth into collective imagination a humble invention,
conceived by need and dedicated to the proposition
of augmenting their bipedal locomotion.
And now we exist in an age of abstruse technologies,
testing whether that invention, or any invention so conceived
and so dedicated can long endure.
The world will little note nor long remember what we
say here but they cannot evade the pervading significance
of that first invention.
From the Wheel to Rocket Science,
Mechanical Engineering leads the way…”
The words engine and "ingenious" are derived
from the same Latin root, "ingenerate”, literally "to create".
Thus, the early "engineers" were the people who
created new things. Before the Industrial Revolution,
most engineering was restricted to military uses. The
Industrial Revolution not only saw the invention of the
steam engine, but also led to the development of various
kinds of machinery for civil usage. As a result, a new
major classification of engineering dealing with tools
and machines, namely Mechanical Engineering, received
formal recognition in 1847.
Mechanical Engineering deals with the design,
development and manufacture
of machines and mechanical
systems. The various
specializations of Mechanical
Engineering are
Energy Technology and Efficiency,
Combustion,
Acoustics, Noise and Vibration
Control, Biomedical
Engineering, Fluid Mechanics
and Aeronautics, Robotics, Automatic control, Computer
Aided Engineering (CAE), Management of Projects
and Project Teams.
Mechanical Engineers of today are involved in the
management of people and resources as well as the development
and use of new materials and technologies,
especially Computer Aided Engineering. Mechanical
Engineers are committed to the use of technology to improve
the quality of life for the society as a whole.
Convener, Mech Chap
The word “production” is often used with the word
“manufacturing”, which is derived from the Latin
words- ‘Manus’ and ‘factus’, meaning ‘hand’ and
‘made’. However, in the
modern sense, the word
may be defined as the art of
manufacturing of articles
and machines of specified
quantity on a planned scale
with minimum consumption
of material and maximum
productivity.
In the modern age, manufacturing industries are
changing very rapidly throughout the world. Concepts
and methods are being developed and exploited to enable
efficient and effective manufacturing.
The new innovations and researches have changed
the entire scenario. The use of computer integrated
manufacturing systems, ultrasonic technologies, flexible
manufacturing systems, and CNCs are giving new
heights to this field.
Current events confirm the vital, dynamic and
practical role of production studies. These studies embrace
economics, engineering, management, and many
other disciplines to confront the difficulties encountered
in converting input to output. The conversion process
yields a bewildering variety of products ranging from
manufactured goods to public services, from crops to
information. The vast number of activities that comprise
the collective subject “Production” make its study particularly
demanding. Many techniques have been devised
to assist the tacticians in this competitive global
market where companies are facing stern challenges to
survive. More or less, it is the battle for production management
with the weapons of planning, analysis and
control.
TECH-NO-LOGIC
THE TRANSGRESSOR…!!!
(This piece of writing is meant for those few individuals alive, who, when at least once in their lives
were jaded by the monotony and mediocrity, thought of a rebellion for a change...but were thwarted
and dumped to the same abysmal ground of ‘life and death’ game...)
TECH-NO
NO-LOGIC !
Out of some bizarre convolutions of the
animal mind, there evolved several notions of
transgression, where life could have met death
head on, jostling for a corner in the hell where our
insatiable satisfactions reside... most of them being
nipped in the bud!! Believe it or not, there was
something abnormal with the greatest of the greatest
that sent them gallivanting from a sane to an
ineluctable insane state. After all, life is all about
being in a morass and then ruling it over by a
sheer insanity of being free!
Sometimes, though, these predilections may
sound offensive and lethal to the society, yet
within our own confines, life offers a little space
to breathe in the eternities! (GOD and defence
ministry forbid me!!)
So, if Venus decided to have a retrograde
motion while all other planets did otherwise, the
scientific world glossed over a simple act of transgression
by talking about nature’s uniqueness. But
you do it and you are right there ‘in scene’. Millions
were born, billions died and what lived was
the incongruity of a hope against hope, the
thought of doing it different and a belief of living
a change. Sooner or later, though, world does accept
the changes!
Life could have been different and perhaps
beautiful, had the little child in us never cared for
earning just a piece of bread and apprehensive of
losing just a clichéd sound sleep!
A transgressor, I mean, is not the one who
would go against the legal and moral values, but
the one who would unfetter himself from the
vicious web of safe play. No matter how much
we brag of struggling to live in one of the toughest
times and making it possible, yet every human
still desires if he could just come out of the
petty means of living life, get rid of the typical
bourgeois mindset and go for something big.
Ostensibly, we all vie to be the quintessential
paragons of decency, try to uphold our
‘immaculate’ and ‘incorrigible’ facades and endeavor
to remain upright always… even if it
costs us the honor we bestow to a hallowed
empty space inside us, a space where we nurture
and venerate our heresies and amuck thoughts,
resurrect them in our sub-conscious because
somewhere the rebellion we seek to pursue in
the murkiest of our metaphysical brain waves,
consternates us and soon these fears (the fear of
soon becoming a pariah, the fear of not being
able to prove our belief right, the fear of being
in yet another fear) besiege us. And, slowly we
integrate with these ordinary means of living life
so well that by the time we realize that something
went wrong, its too late to edit and erase
those circumstances that compelled us to seethe
in anger making them all the more gloomy for
us!
So, dare, shackle yourself with the wind
that would take you to your own wonderland,
no matter how shabby or blotched it is, but ...
live it your way ... a different way …
CATstrated
The CAT stealthily approaches. Its cold
breath flows down the spine sucking all hope and
happiness. Wicked mock CATs prowl the dark
swooping down on the unsuspecting. As dark
clouds gather on this bleak land, strange creatures
emerge with still stranger names as XAT
and the menacing JMET. As their howls come
piercing through the dark, I can't help but feel
alone; can't help but imagine the approaching
CAT-a-clysm.
But the world was never this way. Life was
once simple. Away from the mad rat race of the
cities. Away from the games of cat and mouse,
insulated and protected, here in Pantnagar.
But when I used to return home, all that
calm was shattered in the city. All thanks to the
pathetic network here, I had to first de-brief all
the happenings of the past few months to my
concerned mother. And before I could consume
the first morsels of food - the monthly round up
of all the happenings would start, sugar coated,
with absolutely no implications, stated CATegorically
- Do you know that Mrs. Sharma's
daughter qualified CAT. Mrs. Sharma who? I
enquired, confused. The one from I.F.S. 1984
batch, my mother responded, suspicious at my
ignorance. I, on the other hand, was perfectly
sure that my father was working with no female
colleagues; none that he had mentioned. But before
I could let my memory run any further,
mummy lent her helping hand, as always - Mrs.
Sharma, you know her, whose son is studying in
IIT Mumbai.
I think our linguistically challenged readers
should get to know how the Oprah watching,
Pranayam practicing 21st century Mom introduces
someone. As you would have supposed,
Mrs. Sharma has never given any paper conducted
by the UPSC (civil services), but yeah her
husband had. If my mother would have referred
to her as the lady who had sent the wonderful
mutton curry when I had last come home, it
would have sufficed. Talking about her daughter
who just got into IIM Bangalore or the IITian
son doesn't help much. It is suffocating, Mrs.
Sharma- I.F.S., 1984 batch, PGDM-IIM Bangalore,
But still those days were better!
Then were days, when at dinners I would
meet all those uncles and aunties who held me
in their 'godi' when I was a cockroach. Our halfhearted
and absolutely (and mutually) unwanted
conversations always went this way-
Mrs. Verma - "So Milam heard you are doing
engineering. Where are you studying?"
Me - "G.B.P.U.A.T., Pantnagar."
Mrs. Verma (an expression which my kind is
well aware of) - "Which branch?"
Me - "Aunty, Agricultural Engineering" (Oh
please God no more questions!)
Mrs. Verma (unsure of what to say but saying it
because there's nothing else she can say) - "Yeah
the university is famous for its work in the field
of Agriculture, right?"
Me (meekly) - "Ji Aunty."
Mrs. Verma (hoping to quickly end the conversation,
but at a sweeter note) - "Any future
plans?"
Me (Hey that's easy!) - "Aunty I am preparing
for CAT."
Mrs. Verma (relieved at getting her break) -
"Well that’s very good." (Nodding with appreciation).
Oh! How the CAT saved the day! Somehow
I could still keep my chin high among the
Mrs. Vermas and Mrs. Sharmas. Sooner than I
knew, I was obsessed with 'CAT preparation'. In
my heyday, I was flipping through magazines
money in BVC and CC for bettering my Quantitative
figure them out for Logical Reasoning. Every gadget
was gettable, 'CAT preparation' was the perfect CAT-alyst-
a phone, camera or a laptop, you name it. When I
used to look in the mirror I imagined myself as Frank
W. Abagnale, the con artist portrayed in the movie
Catch Me If You Can. I was on a high, CAT-a-pulted to
the fast life of 'CAT preparation'. And it seemed as if
this would never end. I forgot that one day at 10:30 in
the morning I would be sitting on a chair, armed with a
pencil to fend myself from The CAT hopelessly darkening
bubbles. The bubble has burst. The bears are tearing
down my once bullish sentiment with little remorse. DI,
LR, Quant- all Scripts are in the red with losses all
across the board. This is no small correction; I am witnessing
a whole meltdown. Blame it on the US subprime
crisis!
How messy can it get? Plugging holes, ten too
many, trying to avert the CAT-a-strophe. As a handful
of days remain, life is all but CATstrated.
SHOULD “SHOULD” EXIST??
“You should do it like that, not like this”. Should – a word that occupies quite a lot of space in our daily
talks!! ‘Should’ demands obedience and a life of obedience (unwritten rules) is surely a very comfortable one, but
the one in which one’s creative thinking is diminished. It stresses more upon ‘what to think’ instead of
‘how to think’.
So, is it fair to confine human thoughts and emotions inside a glass-ceiling? I couldn’t say ‘yes’ or
‘no’- the two most powerful words, someone said. I thought it’s doubtful!! But then, choosing doubt
as a way of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.
Every situation being different, I tried not to find the general answer, instead, a circumstantial
one. When does ‘should’ come to life? Sorry, rather I would say, “when should ‘should’ come to
life?” Let’s see… when something that you are doing might have even the slightest impact on any
other person’s freedom, directly or indirectly, practically or at times emotionally. The ceiling should
be of glass if your act affects others and it should be permeable if it does not.
Hey!! It’s not about the constitution and the laws. There are certain supposed rules anywhere and everywhere.
A thing ‘supposed’ to be forbidden, however harmless, most of people think it wrong. And this creates a wall
around the human mind. I don’t say it has to be broken, but yes, it certainly needs to be given a different shape.
Those who say ‘it can’t be done’ would be interrupted by people doing it and if you’re behind mass acclamation,
then it’s better to leave your soul behind the glass.
There would definitely be discouraging instances (misusing the flexibility of ceiling) but do they not exist
now? You can’t eliminate the negative. The solution is not ‘curbing the right to limit the wrong’ but ‘curbing the
wrong to give freedom to the right’. Let ‘should’ exist but let it not hamper your originality. Fifteen years with
‘shoulds’ are enough to alter your originality but also to discover it. Let ‘should’ not exist in your dictionary if it
concerns you & let it be the first word if it’s not ‘just about you’. When we meet ‘should’ on our path; some of us
accede too willingly (some unwillingly); some keep pussyfooting, others have a foot in both camps. There are few
who see things as they are & ask “why”? Hoping to find others (as Lincoln said) who would see things as they might
be & ask “why not?”…
‘A’CADOCRATS
Mr. ‘X’ was just contemplating upon the three letter abbreviation GPA, which propels him to honor another
three letter magical term ONF (One Night Fight), and came out with something he revealed to me.
Grade Point Average, an orthodox expansion of GPA, needs a welcome Renaissance; however, he does apologize
to all Messieurs and Mesdemoiselles maintaining a good reading in this knowledge testing scale. He feels that
“Atthaaa…” is one divine string that beckons him when the indispensability of a high numerical value on this scale
is emphasized upon from the other end of the quotidian familiar phone call. However, he already belongs to this
‘Mug’- lite, oops! sorry... ‘E’- lite class, but this feeling now makes him to ruminate on the validity of his ‘Mug ‘up
coupon, with the attention diverting towards another three letter acronym for Patellites - “LAN” and a fear that his
department subjects may get inspired by ‘Left’ and come right out against the 123-deal with USA.
Oh!!! Sorry; I mean, his secret ‘8’- deal with GPA.
With some contemporary students playing counters with their playing cards which have magical ‘9’ inscribed
on them, the question arises, what will be the tech ‘o’ name for these superhuman 9-pointers?
Ever wondered in what direction are we heading, by maintaining this ‘golden’ legacy of cramming since
1962! Bertrand Russell highlighted a stark reality when he said –
“Our system of education turns young people out of the schools able to read, but for the most part, unable to
weigh evidence or to form an independent opinion”.
Finding the words like “Fathom”, “Analyse”, etc. missing from the 2 nd updated version (c. 1962) of the famous
heritage dictionary that Mr. X issued from the dumprary next to the huge east end TTM (Time Teller Machine), he
would not hesitate to ask for a tute sheet from the HR interviewer, promising him to answer all the questions if the
interviewer could postpone the interview till the next morning.
We are just transforming into mere academicians with a certified degree of technicians.
THE AGONY AND ECSTASY
OF BEING CHEERFUL
Newton’s third law states, “For every action,
there is an equal and opposite reaction”. From this law,
it can be inferred- “For every successful person, there is
at least one unsuccessful person or for every loved and
adored human, there is at least one heart broken or
hated or dejected human.”
But when physical laws are applied to life, they
go on to defy the law more than one step over it, i.e.
more unsuccessful and more heartbroken for the same
number of successful and loved beings respectively.
Coming back to the point, agony and ecstasy form such
a pair. In simple words, they are the zenith and the nadir
of any emotion but are connected in more ways than
one. They are incomplete without one another and they
both compete to complement each other. Although each
of them may be caused by a different reason, the feeling
is rather indistinguishable. The intricacies of life
are not easy to generalize and this, sadly, is the jugglery
of life.
Now, what about being cheerful? Let us get the
hang of it through circumlocution. Smart is not what
one looks like. Smart is what one does. Intellect is invisible
in appearance, but it is in action. Cheerfulness is
not what it appears, rather, it’s the action!! What say…
may be yes may be no!! Maybe one can never ever
know.
Perhaps, cheerfulness is exactly about the appearance
and not actions that precede or succeed it. In fact,
cheerfulness is a persona which is worn in order to ignore
the pain and gloom surrounding it, leading to one’s
insulation from bitter truth. With time, isolation increases,
then suddenly this mask cannot keep its contemporaries
at abeyance.
And when it happens, the individual is in dilemma.
The cheerful feeling suddenly and drastically configures
from ecstasy to agony. This is the agony and ecstasy of
being cheerful. This gives rise to numerous queries, the
answers to which are… NOTHING. Because it’s not as
simple as physics. This is life and any attempt to logically
explain and find solutions to it is nearly impossible.
This may even go on to dilute the positives of being
cheerful, but that’s the way it is. No one can change it.
So, why not forget all about this and be… CHEERFUL.
MY FIRST TECHNICAL
EXPERIENCE
When I left Delhi, I never knew what Pantnagar had in store for me. Charming and soothing splendor of such
a lush green place is far better than Delhi’s anytime. Hostel life indeed added many new dimensions to my persona. I
realized, I had been living in a shell till now and its high time that I come out of my cocoon. Long queues in mess
can frustrate you big time and tiffs over channels in the ‘common room’ are very common. In our hostel, every now
and then, a committee is formed to monitor previously formed committees and soon we might have a committee just
to form other committees! Also mentionable are those one night fights during the hourlies when each one of us is
busy proving himself just one step behind Einstein.
A simple two rupees item can cost you Rs.50 in this campus, this may include Rs.20 as transportation tax and
the rest depends on your temptations as your resolve will surely tend to melt even quicker than an ice-cream on a hot
sunny day. The ones who always make all freshers’ hearts skip a beat are not Bollywood superstars but respected
(infinite times) senior Sirs and Ma’ams.

Recitation of Hanuman Chalisa before leaving the hostel premises surfaced the fear in everyone’s heart and face.
Spouting out abbreviations like EC, ELCOM, DAV etc. are strongly prohibited and tashnism is also banned. Visiting
Chhoti and Badi can send shivers down one’s spine as these are seniors’ favorite hangout zones and each one of
them is always goring at you with thirst in their eyes.
Now that the ragging period is over (lets assume), all freshers’ can take a sigh of relief and can interact with
our (lets say) seniors. In the end, it was all fun. I found many mentors in my seniors and I really mean it from the
THE ROAD LESS
TRAVELLED
Chinmay Dubey, Mechanical Engineering, Batch 2003, is an alumnus of the College of Technology. He
recently appeared in Graduate Record Examination and scored 1490/1600. Here, he shares a complete
overview of the preparation and the application process and how to go about choosing the most suitable
University.
Most of us studying at Pantnagar when
considering postgraduate studies limit ourselves
to CAT and GATE. Very few consider GRE as a
future option. We avoid this eventually lucrative
option mainly because of two reasons-
1.Our misconception that GRE requires a
lot of money
2.Lack of a proper source of information
I will try to alleviate these apprehensions through
this article but I must clear at the onset that this
article is based on my personal experiences; you
might get slightly different suggestions from others.
I will only be discussing about applying to
Universities in the U.S.
Let me start by the degrees you can apply
for in the U.S. These are the Master of Science
program (M.S.), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and
Master of Engineering (M.E.). Getting an M.B.A.
degree from a decent college requires you to give
the GMAT exam, a huge work experience (5
years or more) and your dad to have an oil well.
Mind you, while applying for M.S., you cannot
say that you will do a job after completion of the
degree or that will pursue an M.B.A. Universities
prefer students interested in research.
To complete your M.S. education in U.S., I
must discuss the expenses first. The major expenses
are taking the GRE and TOEFL exam-
Rs.6000 each depending on the dollar rate. Applying
to each college requires an application fee of
about Rs.2000. Request for GRE scores is Rs.600
for each college and it is the same for TOEFL.
Usually students apply to 10 universities. Charges
for sending scores to 4 universities are included in
GRE and TOEFL fees. The names of these four
universities and the department to which you are
applying have to be mentioned after the GRE test
is completed and when registering for TOEFL.
The fees (living expenses + tuition) for the
most expensive university (suppose in California)
can go to 15-20 lacs. You need to pick an education
loan for Rs.15 lacs which will be given by the
bank in installments at the beginning of each semester
in the U.S. university. Some property has
to be placed for mortgage with the bank in lieu of
the loan. You only have to start paying the loan
once you have started earning. Now for the good
news. Most of the Indian students get jobs in the
university as teaching or research assistants or get
fellowships or scholarships. Besides, after the
completion of the first year of graduate study, internships
are offered by industries. These internships
pay you enough to bear the living and study
expenses for the coming year. So my friends say
they will actually be spending only 3 to 4 lacs
maximum out of the education loan.
CRITECH
As for the GRE and TOEFL exam, the GRE paper
consists of three sections- Quantitative, Analytical
writing and Verbal. These sections may appear in any
order. Analytical writing consists of two writing tasks
argumentative and issue. Both are judged on a scale of
6 and the average taken. This section lately has been
appearing first in the test. Quant is class X level, very
simple for engineering graduates. The maximum marks
that can be scored are 800 and it is an achievable target.
Verbal is a bit difficult. Marked out of 800, this section
consists of antonyms, analogies, sentence completion
and reading comprehension. The word list in Barron’s
or The Princeton Review book should be learnt by
heart. Even if someone wakes you up at 3 in the night
and asks you the difference between indolent and insolent
or perspicacious and perspicuous or ferret and fetter
you must dazzle him with your answer complete
day you will invariably find with a sentence to clear the
difference. Still on the final day you
will find at least a word which you
would never have heard of. So don’t
forget to take your lucky charms to
the examination centre on the final
day. These word lists will help you
with the antonyms and analogies section.
They will be testing you on how
well you understand the word meanings
and the various contexts in
which they are used.
So application of the mugged up information is
required. The sentence completion and the reading
comprehension section can only be mastered through
three things-practice, practice and practice. At a later
stage of your preparation you must also master the art
popularly known as “tukkebaji”. So that you can make
an educated guess even if you have no clue to a question.
The paper is adaptive, something like ‘Kaun
Banega Crorepati’. You start with a projected score of
600/800 a correct answer will raise your projected
score and the difficulty of the question. A wrong answer,
on the other hand, will lower your projected score
and a simpler question will appear next. Try answering
the first few questions correctly for a good score. It
might happen that even if you get the last two answers
wrong you still
get an 800 in quant. In verbal they will take you to a
level where you WILL break.
TOEFL is Test of English as a Foreign Language.
It is basically a test to judge how good you
are at speaking and understanding English. There is a
new format introduced these days known as iBT or
Internet Based Testing. It consists of four sectionsreading,
speaking, listening and writing. Each section is
scored out of 30 making the total marks to be 120. The
test is pretty easy and it is better if you take it within a
week after you take the GRE as no preparation is required
and since you are in the habit of handling tests
on the computer, your performance will be better.
The next important thing is the choice of universities
to apply to. You will have to purchase the university
rankings from an agency like US News. Those
planning to give the GRE can pool in their money for
the same. These rankings will give you an idea as to
where the universities stand in the
department to which you are applying
to. Select judiciously taking
into account factors like course of
your choice, fees, cost of living,
proximity to an engineering hub
(ease of getting a job), etc. These
variables are up to you to decide.
The application process is a
long drawn process in which you
have to take care of small details
like Statement of Purpose, letters of recommendations,
transcripts and a few small formalities. It is better if
you find someone with Uncle Sam to help you with
these aspects as it is very difficult to cram all the information
into one article and a person presently studying
in the U.S. will be a better source of information on
these aspects.
If you have any queries regarding this article or
otherwise, you can contact me at
dubeychinmay@rediffmail.com
Remember! Unlike CAT and GATE, where there
are lacs of students against whom you are competing,
this is an easier pathway. All you need to do is survive
the stress of the application process.

LOSING MY RELIGION
Consider this, consider this
The hymn of the century
Consider this
There is this girl. She wants to go home to celebrate a festival and the college is off for that period. She decides
the dates, gets her ticket booked and calls up home for the fax and the required phone call. Next are the formalities of
the signing of the leave application by the authorities. She explains the reason for the leave. She has to decide carefully
about what she says, may be it has been used by many. But logic is constantly asking her for the reason, the reason
for the lie. It’s a three day holiday and its been long since she had seen the other creatures of the world after
seven. Finally, her plans are thwarted. And the reason. That too many of them are leaving together. But logic is finicky.
It just won’t stop. And the reason. When all the formalities are done and no rules have been broken, why then
the incarceration?
Every whisper
Of every waking hour I’m
Choosing my confessions
We are friends, boys and girls!! We go to class together and study at peace. But we need time to be together and
have fun and talk a while. We are free after class hours only. We gather up outside the college, talk and laugh and
bust stress with this. Now a jeep comes around and in it, a martinet with rage, rude and unease. We look around to
see what happened and what did we miss. But he addresses us, tells us straight and strict to leave. For security Reasons.
But what did we miss? When and why was the 144 imposed? And the reasons. But logic is an age old fusspot.
It never gives up. And the reason. Where do we go? We can’t go to the canteen and burn our pockets, we are Homo
sapiens. Others in our group have a set entry time too. And we are engineers, right? No intention of an uprising and
we are just sitting on the bench, which was there for that purpose, right? Why the mortification?
Oh no I said too much
I haven’t said enough
Life is bigger
Its bigger than you
And you are not me
Things that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
They are the people, the best here. They can
do it, make the difference. They know the library
and How Stuff really Works. They can
make papers, they can invent, they can challenge.
All they want is time and freedom. Freedom to
work. Space to imply, to try, try and change for
the better. They enjoy classes till 5 pm. All they
want next are the labs and a continuous source of
information. But when they try to get in to the
college after 5 pm, they are stopped by the guard asking for permission. They have it but the lab is locked, the wireless
internet till 4 pm only. Talked to the concerned persons. They have to come and do it at college hours. But logic
is too pernickety. It won’t let go. And the reasons. But they attend all the classes and the labs. They have perfect results.
How can they be at two places at the same time. Why are they not allowed in the college after 5 pm? Will they
break things, things which only gather dust. Or will they just walk away with them. Because, if it had to get stolen, it
would during college hours itself. Are they the benighted ones?

Trying to keep up with you
I am a student who is on academic probation. I come to join college after the semester break. Have to register
myself, take up new courses of that semester. But there’s more to it. I have to fill up a bond that I will improve myself.
I see it as a pledge and start planning about my studies. But there’s more to it. The bond has to be approved and
signed by various authorities. The classes have started. But I have still not been registered. I have to wait for the
bond to be signed but there are others like me too. It takes time. So finally after 4 to 5 days, I get registered. I get to
join regular classes, but I find that I have suffered a lot in studies and in attendance, which is the primacy of all that
there is. Also, when I get questioned over and over, I ask myself “am I a reprobate?” But logic is a bigot. And its on
fire. And the reasons. When I am already weak in studies, why is the system so designed that I have to miss classes?
I even have to pay extra for late registration! And when I have not been registered, how can I be marked absent!
Why then have I been stymied?
Oh no I said too much
I set it up
And the reasons. Their reasons
‘I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think that I thought I saw you try’
But that was just a dream
AN INTERVIEW WITH
DR. R. S. KANWAR
(Dr. R. S. Kanwar, Professor and Department Chair, Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, Iowa
State University, is an alumnus of the College of Technology and his area of research includes- Irrigation,
Drainage, Sustainable Agriculture Production Systems, etc. Here, he shares with us his ideas and
vision for the students and society as a whole.)
Q. How grave do you think is the water problem and how far
have we been successful in addressing the issue of water crisis?
A. In the 21st century, while the world population has tripled,
the use of renewable sources has grown six folds. World over,
more than 1.1 billion people have inadequate access to safe
drinking water. This has resulted in water stress which has led to
an inadequate imbalance between water use and water resources.
The two factors that need to be taken into account are water
availability and water quality. As we know, the vanishing water
resources have to be utilized efficiently for industrial use and
irrigation; and for hydropower generation. The provision for
pure drinking water supply is also of utmost importance to social security worldwide.
Q. How differently is the issue of water crisis being handled in India and in US?
A. Though the problems are similar, the implementation of policies differs in both the countries.
While in US, the water allocation process is very systematic; in India, sometimes the policies are politically
driven and hence their legitimacy, questionable.
Q. How close are farmers to technology in US than in India and how willing
are they to accept new technologies?
A. Often, technology is advanced as a panacea, but the cost of the technology
sometimes keeps away a number of farmers from availing these solutions. In US,
most of the farmers own a sizeable chunk of land and hence have a fleet of tractors
and other farm machinery systems. The use of technology, in such a case, is
economically viable. Though India is technologically as sound as US but here the peasant sector has
stagnated and there is widespread impoverishment. Hence, for them, the use of technology is out of
question.
Moreover, US government has provisions for providing energy audits and offer incentives for on-farm
conservation which strengthens the financial conditions of farmers and boosts clean power and energy
efficiency.
TECH ACHIEVER
Q. Is Iowa State University planning for a student exchange program with GBPUA&T?
A. Yes, and that is because the students of different countries must acquire a holistic perspective of the
situation. The program has been named ‘International Water Management’, where the students of
three Indian universities, viz., PAU, Ludhiana, UAS University, Bangalore and GBPUA&T, Pantnagar
and six US universities, viz., Cornell University, Ohio University, Iowa State University, University
of Illinois, Purdue University and Texas A&M University will be working on research projects
together to come up with the best technology and better solutions. This is a step to transform the students
into global products.
PAGE 22
TECONFLUENCE
Q. How can we persuade the students to opt for higher studies?
A. Higher studies offer a tremendous scope for research and development in private companies and teaching. The
students at the graduate level must be engaged in research projects at a larger scale. In US, students at the graduate
level are paid (say $20 an hour) for the work they do. This way the students get a better understanding of their respective
fields while making money. And this is the time when they realize the importance of higher education as
well. In fact, I was surprised to see not even a single student in the campus when I visited here last night at 10
o’clock, which is not the case in US. The students should be encouraged to work in the laboratories all the time and
should be indulged in more of laboratory and practical work.
Samanvay 2007 not only provided a great
forum for alumni to retrospect and cherish the
golden memories but also provided an idea to the
Editorial Board to include a new section in the
college magazine, which finally ended up in a
conglomeration of the views, memories and suggestions
that the alumni shared with the members
of the board.
TIME: 10:00 am
PLACE: The corridor of Patel that connects
Production Wing with Computer
and Electrical wing.
Two members helplessly
thinking of ways to communicate,
with alumni in order
to collect substantial matter,
however time of the incident
is already mentioned, but the
faces were surely reflecting a
particular two digit number-
12. Soon their hearts were filled with alacrity,
when they found two alumni standing behind
them discussing their time. Realizing the Eureka
Moment, one of them immediately ran for diary
and a pen; however he searched for a book ‘how
to learn ‘shorthand’ in two minutes’, but all in
vain. Mr. Rajeev Bhatnagar, 1975 batch, beholding
a dignified standing in BHEL, Hardwar,
emphasized on importance of sports, and how
sports play an integral role in shaping one’s persona.
Now a days, the fact that whether they are
working for public or private sector, a technical
pressure has been created due to the rapid
advancements in technology on its performing
and non-performing employees. Finding the
mess experiences same as they were 32 years
back, he concluded ‘Talking to self is the key
to success.’
Mr. Manher Samir (1973 batch), a businessman,
again emphasized on importance of
sports and shared that he was not satisfied with
his visit to Stevenson Stadium
as he found very
few students practicing
their game.
TIME: 10:30 pm
PLACE: TIC
We were returning to the
hostel, discussing some
substitute to the dinner.
Suddenly, we saw a ‘Suzuki’ that parked
itself in front of TIC, and a group of alumni
came out. There were some eye contacts as we
turned towards the hostel. They had planned to
visit TIC, the favourite place to hangout with
friends. Suddenly, there was a call from the
group, ‘hey guys, where are you going? Just join
us here.’ Actually, we had already slowed down
our steps expecting their call. After all it was not
a bad idea to get some free food that came at the
moment most unexpected, as our minds were
SARANG ’07 PAGE 23
also giving response to the newly formed stimulus. After
brief introductions they were busy discussing their
time at college. Mr. Y related one of his third year incidents.
He was moving in the corridor of the hostel in a
state where the least concern of a person is the response
time. He collided with the wall, and the words that
came from within were “ab toh deewarein bhi kehne
lagi hai humse, chalo jara rasta badal ke.” When asked
of one quality that developed solely at Pantnagar which
they found disgusting at later stages, ‘Complacency’,
came the quick answer. After a huge discussion on their
routine visiting place before 18:30 every day (you
guessed it right, its ‘badi market’), came the words of
advice ‘you are in this institution at a time when it is in
its peak. Work hard and struggle to maintain the
‘Pantnagar culture’.
Another person interrupts, ‘As we have maint-
ained it. We still work on our assignments just the penultimate
day. You know, the usual ‘One Night Fights.’
And there was a burst of laughter.
One of them compared the present situation with
theirs’- ‘there is a lack of cultural diversity now, as the
students are mainly from Uttarakhand’. He carried out
the conversation and asked us to give our introductions
once more. And then he repeated them all. We were all
flabbergasted. He remembered every name correctly.
‘By the way, it is one more thing that Pantnagar is going
to teach you.’ He smiled. Each of them contributed
something to Maatam, the vendor at TIC. Consider this
as the empathy or the sense of belongingness but whatever
it was, we all felt that whichever way the roads of
life leads us to, we all will always be connected to the
place.
SARANG ’07
August 13 th , the date probably wouldn’t ring any bells to a layman- it’s not one of the several “days” invented
by cheesy card companies, it doesn’t mark any festival or holiday, and it certainly doesn’t leave its significance
noted down in the pages of history. However, for all freshers in COT, Pantnagar, the day meant a special occasion –
the freshers’ eve SARANG ’07. An event most of us had been looking forward to with much anticipation.
SARANG – a name apt to the event, as it showcased all the different colors of human talent that we harbor
among the pool of technology students. The event being the first big function of
the new semester, the practices began with all of us- the participants -being a little
nervous about meeting and actually interacting with our seniors. But, fortunately
for us, all our nervousness disappeared under their helpful and supportive nature.
After much diligence and assiduity from the participants as well as the mentors,
the much awaited eve of 13 th August,’07 finally arrived. The event was graced by
the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. P. L. Gautam; Dean, College of Technology, Dr. M. P.
Singh, and other dignitaries.
As the audience started pouring in the Gandhi Auditorium, the excitement
backstage reached relativistic proportions. The programme included a devotional
song as well as dance- both of which were quite inspiring. To rock the stage, we
had some amazing dances on the latest foot-tapping numbers. There was a play titled “HMC” whose comic elements
would put even the ‘Indian Laughter Challenge’ to shame. There were several awesome performances by the seniors
as well. The evening went off very well, but most of us wished it to last longer. SARANG, as we realized, wasn’t
just any other entertaining event, but something that has a major significance for all of us as first year students since
it not only provided us with a platform to showcase our talents but also gave us a chance to interact with our seniors.
All in all, it was an occasion that would remain etched in our memories forever!
