Welcome from the Chair
I am absolutely delighted to invite you to join us June 14-16, 2012 for the 57th Annual Meeting of the Plastic Surgery
Research Council, hosted by the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan. The PSRC has consistently
presented the finest quality basic science and clinical research across the full breadth of plastic surgery. This year’s
meeting will continue to build on that tradition with many outstanding research presentations, invited speakers, panels,
and research workshops to provide our meeting registrants with the most innovative and exciting advancements in our
field. Under the direction of our program chair, Jim Bradley, the PSRC program should prove to be absolutely spectacular.
The Local Program will feature Lloyd Carr, the former University of Michigan football coach and national champion;
Dave Brandon, former CEO of Domino’s Pizza and current athletic director; Andrew Feustal, PhD, NASA astronaut and
veteran of two space shuttle missions; Ora Pescovitz, MD, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs; Jim Wolliscroft,
MD, Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School; and Mike Mulholland, MD, PhD, Department of Surgery
Chairman. We will also have the honor of welcoming nationally recognized scientists Dr. Ormond MacDougall and Dr.
David Martin who will share with us their incredible accomplishments and scientific advances.
You will be enjoying the scientific sessions in the Michigan League. A building constructed in the late 1800’s to promote social interaction, it has been
the center of education, growth, and activism for both the university and the community. As a result, it is an ideal location to host a scientific meeting
for a professional society that was created for the education and growth of scientists and clinicians in the field of plastic surgery. This year we received
409 submissions, a record number of abstracts for the PSRC. The scientific program committee worked diligently to select the highest quality abstracts
for our scientific sessions. Ultimately, 111 outstanding abstracts were selected for podium presentations, representing the finest basic science and
clinical research in plastic surgery (27% acceptance rate). We have reintroduced poster sessions this year and have selected 48 high quality abstracts,
representing the full breadth of plastic surgical research. This year’s program will also feature a special one hour Past-Chair’s Panel entitled, “Innovations
in Our Subspecialties”. This panel will undoubtedly prove to be insightful, informative, and entertaining. Under the direction of Peter Taub, we will host
the 6 th Annual Guest Society Lecture to be presented this year by Steve Goldstein, PhD, former President of the Orthopedic Research Society.
The social events will provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy time with your friends, make new friends, and relax in interesting settings. We are
excited to be able to hold the Welcome Reception at the University of Michigan Football Stadium (AKA the “Big House”) in the VIP area of the new
luxury suites. The Big House has drawn crowds of over 100,000 people for over 200 consecutive home football games. All these people can’t be wrong
-it is an amazing place and you will enjoy celebrating the start of the PSRC meeting in this unique location. The Members’ Dinner will be held in the
Colloquium, located on the sixth floor of the Ross School of Business with stunning views of the University of Michigan campus and Ann Arbor. It is a
beautiful location for an enjoyable event.
I am excited to share with you that we will be hosting the Plastic Surgery Foundation Career Fundamentals Workshop entitled, From Residency to
Tenure: A Road Map for Success for the Academic Plastic Surgeon, immediately following the PSRC meeting. The workshop will begin Saturday
afternoon, June 16 and end at noon on Sunday. It has been organized by Jim Bradley, Lars Steinstrasser, and me, in cooperation with Keith Hume and
Jennifer McCormick from the PSF. We have a star-studded faculty of leaders in academia to provide a highly educational, informative, and interesting
workshop to help our younger PSRC members become successful academic plastic surgeons and future leaders. I hope that you will consider attending
this excellent workshop.
Of course, no PSRC meeting is complete without our Annual Hockey Game to be played Saturday night against one of the local hockey teams. Please
let us know if you plan to play so we can make appropriate arrangements. Make sure your health insurance is paid up. We’ll have our orthopedic
surgery colleagues on call and ready for business. I look forward to seeing you on the ice.
I am honored to serve as the Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Research Council and am humbled by the opportunity to host our annual scientific
meeting at the University of Michigan. It promises to be an outstanding meeting with excellent research, educational opportunities, and fun social
events. I hope to see you there.
Educational Overview
The Plastic Surgery Research Council (PSRC) and the Annual Scientific Meeting of the PSRC were developed for physicians and
scientists in the field of plastic surgery to share their research, be exposed to new discoveries made by their peers, and to develop
into the leaders of tomorrow. Because all presentations focus on research and emerging trends, the meeting will present the
most recent findings in the literature and the latest advances in basic science and clinical research. Abstracts are peer-reviewed
and rated based on several factors, including what is perceived to be of most interest to the prospective learners, what is ‘new
and exciting’ in the field and what is best supported by the research. The scientific method employed in the basic science and
clinical research presented at the meeting is the accepted standard for scientific investigation within biomedical investigation. A
major component of the scientific method requires rigorous peer review, which is the product of open discourse as provided by
the Plastic Surgery Research Council. We expect that the PSRC will provide the highest quality research incorporating rigorous
scientific methodology, innovation, and new discoveries to improve the understanding, comprehension, and technical expertise
of the meeting attendees. In addition, we anticipate, that meeting registrants will also gain new knowledge which will be
applicable to all of their research pursuits and clinical activities. Undoubtedly, this enhancement in understanding will translate
into improved clinical care and improved research productivity and advancement of the field of plastic surgery.
Target Audience
The Annual Meeting of the PSRC is intended for plastic surgeons, residents, fellows, medical students and other healthcare
professionals interested in plastic surgery research.
OBJECTIVES
