A NOTE FROM
It may seem hard to believe, but it has been
almost 20 years since California became the
first state to legalize the medical use of
cannabis. Slowly but surely, state and local
governments are starting to come around.
Presently, 23 states and the District of Columbia
have begun to establish regulations by
which patients will finally gain safe, legal access
to the medicine they need.
In 2014, over 300 applications for medical
marijuana establishments were approved in the
state of Nevada. Read our exclusive interview
with Christopher Hussey, co-owner of one
of the first cannabis cultivation centers to open
in Las Vegas.
KNOWTHE LAW
Protect Yourself!
Despite the fact that Nevada has recognized the
legal use of marijuana for medical purposes since late
2000 (1), the state’s medical marijuana program is still in
its infancy.
Many law-abiding patients have had negative experiences
with law enforcement agencies simply due to the fact
that some law enforcement officers may not yet fully
understand a state’s medical marijuana laws. In these
situations, law enforcement may be unable to do their job
(to protect and serve) to the best of their ability through
no specific fault of their own.
What does this mean for medical
marijuana patients and caregivers
living or visiting the
state of Nevada?
No matter where you travel it is always important to be
familiar with local and state laws and regulations that may
pertain to you. In this case, learning the facts about MMJ
in Nevada, so you can understand your rights and responsibilities
as a patient or caregiver.
Good to know…
First and foremost, know that a person who has a registry identification card or physician’s
recommendation is NOT exempt from prosecution if:
1
They drive, operate, or control a vehicle or vessel under power or sail while under the
influence of medical marijuana.
2
They water ski, surfboard or use any similar device while under the influence of medical
marijuana.
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
They operate an aircraft while under the influence of medical marijuana.
They have physical possession of a firearm while under the influence of medical marijuana.
They embark on an amusement ride while under the influence.
The possession of marijuana or drug paraphernalia is discovered because the person
engaged or assisted in the medical use of marijuana:
1. In a public place.
2. In a detention facility, county jail, state prison.
3. While delivering marijuana to another person, even if they hold a registry card.
They unlawfully possess a firearm
They possess or use marijuana or related paraphernalia in public view
They knowingly deliver marijuana to a person without a registration card
Holding a State Marijuana registry card does NOT exempt a person from federal laws that
apply to marijuana. With that being said, knowledge is a powerful tool; understanding MMJ
laws in the state of Nevada and how they may apply to you could come in handy someday.
IN THE INDUSTRY...
Name: Christopher Hussey
Profession: Cannabis Cultivator & Grow Consultant
When Senate Bill 374 was passed in 2013,
Nevada finally allowed for the establishment
of state licensed cannabis businesses
including; cultivation, production, laboratories
and dispensaries. Even before the
bill was officially signed into law, many
people saw the infinite possibilities that lie
within the industry.
Christopher Hussey is one of those people
who saw the opportunities and made a
decision to get in on the ground floor. Last
year, he chose to join forces with a small
group of trusted friends and fellow patients,
in order to apply for a license from the state
for a medical marijuana establishment—
specifically a cultivation center-and they
succeeded!
Lifestyle: Where did your
interest in cultivation begin?
C.H. “I grew up in a rural area in Saratoga
Springs, New York. As a kid I would help my
parents in the garden, growing vegetables,
flowers, transplanting, and fertilizing…As a
teen, I spent the summers working at the
horse farm across the street, where I
learned the intricate art behind planting and
tending to hay fields. I was introduced to
the idea of harvesting, drying, curing and
storing an agricultural crop.
I found the drying and curing process
required to produce quality hay for horses
to be quite interesting. The owner of the
farm, Fred, was generous enough to share
his vast knowledge with me. He worked
from sunrise to sunset every day to make
sure that the hay he produced was the
highest quality possible. His constant strive
for perfection was an inspiration for me to
always do my best.”
8 Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine / Summer Solstice 2015

“The agricultural skills and informal training I received
made the transition to assisting friends who were growing
indoors relatively easy. Over the years, I have met so
many people who were helped in so many ways, medically,
physically, emotionally…all by this simple plant...My
respect for this natural treatment
increased every day, and continues today. Over
the past few years, I’ve gotten really serious with
indoor horticulture, first as a private patient and
slowly, as laws began to change, it became my full
time job. I could see that this industry was going
to be huge and I wanted to be on the
cutting edge, so I started testing and experimenting
with different methods of growing to
see what might work best once we could finally
scale up to legal commercial production
capacity. I keep notes on everything, every
variable, every minute change that could have an
effect on the plants. These notes and records are
proving to be quite valuable as I transition into
my current position.”
Lifestyle: Can you elaborate on some of
the “experiments” you have performed?
C.H. I can’t really go into too
much detail because much of this
data I have collected is proprietary
in nature. It took a lot of
time and investment to gather.
What I can say is that; I have
compared a variety of different
brands of grow fixtures, lights
(LED, MH, HPS) and different
spectrums of each light type. I
also analyzed the spectrum of
each light with the assistance of a
precision optical company I used
to work for. This company
manufactured optical parts for
the Hubble telescope and the
Mars Rover. I have tried motorized
light movers… I even grew
plants upside down…Fertilizers,
grow media, water quality, humidity, temperature, light
cycles, pruning methods, are all variables that I have
modified, tested and the recorded the results. I make sure
to write everything down…
I’ve discovered that no matter how much I
believe I will remember something, I almost never do. It’s
very helpful to have the exact numbers and notes available
for reference and not have to go by memory.”
Lifestyle: In Nevada over 150 provisional licenses
for cultivation centers were granted; What were
some of the steps involved for
your group to apply for an MMJ
Establishment License?
C.H. “The application process is a
very tedious and lengthy procedure
that I will try not to bore you with by
discussing in too much detail. I am
very lucky to be working with my
current partners who did an amazing
job in getting a great application put
together on a tight schedule. There
is no way I could have done any of
this without them. While many
applicants chose the simple way and
just cut a check to their lawyer to
write everything up, we put in the
long hours and did as much work as
possible on our own. I think in the end this paid off
because we had a well polished application that we are
intimately familiar with.”
Summer Solstice 2015 / Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine 9

Lifestyle: What have you learned from your
personal experience and experiments as a
grower that you have applied to the large scale
cultivation facility?
C.H.: Pretty much everything! Light sizing, spacing, height,
how much to water, how often to water, plant spacing,
the most effective fertilizers and mix ratios, I could go
on and on. All of my personal growing was done
knowing that someday it would be scaled up 100 times
or more in a huge facility.”
Lifestyle: Can you tell us about some of the
unique features of your facility’s design?
C.H. “All of our plumbing and materials were specially
chosen to not exert any negative effects on the plants. I
find that many people do not realize the amount of
toxins and chemicals that can contaminate their plants,
especially in a recirculating system. Many of the materials
we use are not widely available in the US, so it was a
struggle to find suppliers. It is crucial that the plants have
a non toxic environment to thrive in. Even the adhesive
for our plumbing is a special low toxicity and VOC
formula. The volatile organic compounds that are so
prevalent in our modern lives can have detrimental
impacts on plants, disrupting many of their communication
systems. It is very important to prevent them from
being exposed to this artificial influence. The work and
cost to do this work was very significant but it has been
10 Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine / Summer Solstice 2015

worth every penny to know we will have the cleanest
product possible. “The part that I am most proud of is
that we are making the most efficient use of our space
as possible. I’m confident that we will be getting the
most product per square foot of space inside our
facility. Our goal is to be the most energy efficient
growers in the state by a long shot. Energy
consumption has turned into a huge, unexpected issue
for many cultivators. I love the challenge of increasing
efficiency in all aspects of production, as do my business
partners; we have come up with many unique solutions
that we are excited to pioneer.”
Lifestyle: Any tips for people wanting to start a
licensed cannabis establishment?
C.H. “Sharpen your pencils and get out your
checkbook, there is a lot of paperwork to do and a
lot of fees to pay! Don’t give up! If you want it bad
enough you can make it happen.”
Forever Flowering Greenhouses and Light Deprivation
FFG began as a vision one day on the farm. Growing. Doing it. Coming up with ways to do it
better. With a background of two decades in the field came the ideas of how to create products
for others to do it as well. With each growing cycle came a deeper understanding of the plants
and their needs. With each season came lessons from our experience on how to create a better
growing environment that needed less daily input and reduced the margins of error. We are
farmers that came to know and understand our field and create greenhouses to service it.
THE
EVOLUTION
OF
Drinking Water: it quenches our thirst; it hydrates our
body; and, in this case--brings music to our ears!
Written By: DJ Canna Chick
It’s a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas,
and we here at Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine
have the pleasure of spending it at Rosie’s Placethe
home, practice space and sometimes concert
venue for the band Drinking Water.
Who is Drinking Water?
In its present incarnation, DW consists of three
musicians and best friends: Henry -lead singer
and guitarist, David (aka Bilo) on drums and
the newest member, rockin’ female bassist
Anais.
The formation of Drinking Water began with
the shared dream of two 15 year old kids who
just wanted to play music. Bilo and Henry, both
originally from Yuma, Arizona, quickly bonded over
their joint interest in music and discovering the
power of plant medicine.
In 2008, in between working, hiking, exploring
nature, and sleeping (sometimes in their car)—
the guys decided to start a band: and needed to
come up with a name. As dudes of few possessions,
one of the only items that came with them
everywhere was a generic gallon jug which literally
had the words “Drinking Water” spelled out
on the label. One day, (while medicating) the jug’s
label took on a whole new meaning and the name
search was over. Bilo says, “It [the name] just kind
of stuck.” Henry adds, “It ‘fit’ and seemed ‘catchy’
so we went with it… [the words] ‘Drinking water’
goes tight and deep to our souls.”
As for DW’s start in the music business, Henry
says, “I feel like we really began in 2011 when we
12 Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine / Summer Solstice 2015

started recording and touring…that’s when we started
to get more serious…”
In the years that these guys have been together they
have much to be proud of, including; three full length
recorded albums, multiple tours across the US and
Mexico, as well as being a staple in the Las Vegas
ska-punk music scene and cannabis community.
As the lead singer, guitarist and song writer, Henry is
often the voice of DW in many ways. He is a super
sweet dude, happy to share his insight on the worldwhich
seems to come from a deep-rooted wisdom
beyond his twenty-something years of age.
You can clearly hear Henry’s depth reflected in DW’s
lyrics. The music is thoughtful and thought-provoking,
super catchy and sometimes, en Espanol—and while
Henry may be the vessel through which the
verbal message is shared- all of DW’s members
(past and present) have shared similar values, ideals
(like practicing a vegan lifestyle) and living space.
Henry says, “Drinking Water is all about
relationships…a huge part of our dynamic is the
closeness... living together, working together, eating
together and sometimes sleeping together in the van
when we’re on the road…we really feel blessed to get
along so well.”
“As we’ve gotten older,
we’ve gotten more serious:
Now I sing to
feel good… I sing for
expression”
Summer Solstice 2015 / Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine 13

Resident drummer Bilo and bassist, Anais, are
more of the strong, silent types but both definitely
hold their own with a solid stage presence in
addition to their musical talents.
Bilo and his infectiously vibrant smile have been
with DW since the beginning, Anais on the other
hand just started playing music with the guys less
than 6 months ago but you would never know it
when you hear them playing together.
Along with being band mates, Henry and Anais
have dating together for 5 years; so when it came to
finding someone to replace the former bass player
(Perro-who is Anais’s cousin) there was no better
choice.
In regards to this new aspect
of their relationship,
Henry says, “She already knows
DW…and now, I feel we are even
stronger.”
14 Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine / Summer Solstice 2015

What is the Dream for DW’s future?
Henry: “We want to do more festivals and express
our songs to a larger crowd…it’s a give and receive
type deal…a shared expression with the audience…
a connection through sound, movement and dancing”
“We have never been able to
record without a time
limit…That’s what we really
need…Like 1200 hours just
to record.”
Summer Solstice 2015 / Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine 15

“With age comes a wider
perspective…not only
your own…but the desire
to appeal to a broader
audience”
The growth, evolution and experiences of Drinking Water continue as the band gets
ready to release their third album this summer titled “Gracias A Dios”. This time around,
the group is going with an acoustic sound and about 80% Spanish language lyrics. We
each new album, one of DW’s goals is to share a new dimension of their sound with the
audience. Henry says, “We are always thinking about new sounds/vocals and instruments
to add...we are only limited by ourselves and what we think we can’t do.”
Drinking Water on Cannabis as Medicine
“We believe cannabis is for everyone who needs it: babies...kids…adults…whoever.”
“People seem to be more into self realization…I think we are starting to realize that
“drugs” in this case cannabis-is healing on so many levels.
”“Because it comes from a seed, God says, ‘have as much as you need’.”
Title: Musical Dream
One spring night, I awoke from a very vivid dream with an overwhelming need to paint an image that I had seen in
the dream. During a four-hour painting session that night, this image entitled “ Musical Dream” poured out of my
soul like honey. Painting this felt comforting, each brush stoke as natural as breathing.
About halfway through the painting, I remember realizing that I wasn’t even really thinking about what I had started,
and before I knew it, I was signing my name at the bottom. Because the painting is so colorful, you have to look extra
hard to find the tiny dragonfly hiding within the image for good luck!
A Patient’s Perspective
My name is Trinidad. I am a professional baker, edibles consultant,
cannabis advocate and Nevada MMJ patient. I want
to share a little about myself and my experience with the
medical side of cannabis. I was introduced to the idea of
cannabis as medicine a little more than 3 years ago when I
met a guy named Craig; who was selling his trucks to my
buddy. Keeping in mind
that I had never met this
guy before, he comes out
and starts talking with
me about marijuana
and right there starts to
tell me his personal
struggle fighting against
brain cancer for many
years. At first, I could
have cared less about his
story and just wanted to
get the trucks
and leave but then
something stopped me
and I really started
listening to him. I realized
I felt for him and the
conversation kept on
going. I really didn’t
know anything about
what he was saying; I had
always thought you
“smoked pot to get
stoned” and now here’s
this guy telling me its
medicine, specifically his
medicine that he uses to
treat his brain cancer! To add to it, this guy was told by his
doctors that he had only six months to live-and yet here we
were talking, against all odds, 8 years later. My mind was
blown!
so that I could safely have access to the medicine I needed.
Over the next few months, I became good friends with the
guy and he inspired me to learn to make infused products
for myself. Being a baker by trade for over 30 years, it
was only natural for me to start making infused baked
goods. I get to use my baking skills and creativity to come
up with all sorts of new
goodies while maintaining
the very high standards for
how products look and
taste that I have set for
myself. I have been making
edibles for about three
years now, this is how I
feel I can do the greatest
good for myself, other
patients and the cannabis
community.
I get involved with
community, actively participate
in local advocacy
events and try to learn
more about cannabis so
that I can help educate and
teach other people what I
once didn’t know: that it’s
not all about “getting
stoned.”
The guy who introduced
me to all this, Mr. BMF- as
I like to call him-has since
passed away. Without
having met him, I don’t
know if I’d be where I am right now doing what I love with a
passion. I get emotional when I talk about it. Craig is missed
but he will never be forgotten.
At this point in the conversation I mentioned to him that I
have been diagnosed with and suffer from chronic back pain
and a sometimes debilitating condition called vertigo; so he
goes inside for a minute and comes back out with cannabisinfused
butter and cooking oil to give me to try at home and
let him know how it works. That night, I get home and try a
very little bit of the stuff and low and behold a few hours
later my symptoms and pain are gone! After a few more
trials, I was convinced that this option worked for me better
than any conventional medical treatment I had ever tried so
I decided to see my doctor and become a legal MMJ patient
Give your HEART
some Love with HEMP
By Jessica Aragona, MS, RD, LDN
The cannabis plant may be one of the most diverse
species of plant that humans have learned to cultivate.
Not unlike the many varieties of apples, some of
which are better for juices or applesauce, and other
varieties which are best cooked in pies: there are
different types of cannabis, which have different properties
and can be used in many different ways.
Certain subspecies of the plant naturally produce
compounds that may have psychoactive effects (when
ingested or inhaled); other varieties however are
grown mainly to produce fibers, foods, wood or seeds.
The latter varieties typically have little to none of
these psychoactive compounds while still retaining
many of the other beneficial elements.
Our focus today, The Hemp Plant, is one of the
non-psychoactive varieties.
Hemp is a tall, woody plant that will grow in practically
any climate. Hemp is the nonpsychoactive
cannabis subspecies, specifically known as Cannabis
Sativa L. A variety of processes can be applied to the
different parts of the plant, which may be used for
industrial purposes or made into foods and oils that
have known benefits for human health and nutrition.
Heart Healthy Benefits of Hemp
Hemp Seeds and Hemp Seed Oil contain the “perfect” ratio of the
healthy fats known as Omega-3 & Omega-6
Including Hemp Foods as a regular part of your diet may help:
Reduce inflammation in the body.
Prevent or reduce the risk for blood clots.
Lower the risk of developing certain cancers by reducing
damage to healthy cells.
Increase metabolism by promoting fat burning rather
than fat storage.
A variety of hemp foods and products are available
right now: online, at your local grocery store, natural
foods market or co-op.
Easy ways to add
Hemp Foods Everyday!
Cold pressed Hemp Seed Oil can be used as salad
dressing, drizzled over baked potatos, sweet potatoes
or grilled vegetables, or added to any of your favorite
recipes that call for olive oil.
Hemp Seed Oil is best when used cold, as it has a semi
low smoke point of 330 degree F (about 10 degrees higher
than olive oil) making it not the most optimal oil for cooking.
Hemp Protein Powder, Hemp Seeds and Hemp Milk, all make
great additions to smoothies, milkshakes or creamy soups.
Hemp Seeds are delicious on salads, added to muffins or pancakes, or with their
naturally rich, nutty flavor, you may choose to simply eat a handful of seeds all on
their own.
Activation of
24 Cannabis Lifestyle Magazine / Summer Solstice 2015

the 3rd Eye
Cannabis has the potential to heal the nation and the
world on much more than just the physical plane. This sacred
herb is known for its ability to help open up the mind,
reduce anxieties and induce a state of euphoria; often creating
a sense of calm connectedness with the Divine beauty
within and all around us.
According to some ancient texts and oral traditions from
around the world, activation of the pineal gland sometimes
known as the “3rd Eye” has been practiced since the
beginning of time. In correspondence to spirituality, the
pineal gland may be considered the seat of the soul.
Cannabis, as spiritual medicine, can be used as a tool to
further illuminate this tiny, yet powerful pine cone shaped
gland in the center our brain.
The pineal gland needs to rest each night and the best way
for it to do that, is in total darkness but to reach total
darkness, one’s 3rd eye must first be activated during the
waking hours.
If you choose to activate your 3rd Eye through meditation,
breath work and/or the use of cannabis as spiritual medicine,
you may find the following grounding visualization
beneficial as you journey toward inner illumination.
Activation of the 3rd Eye
Take some space for yourself; find a quiet, peaceful
place to sit comfortably.
Close your eyes and envision a glowing orb of light
gently floating in front of you.
Begin to inhale through the mouth as you visualize
drawing the golden rays of the orb inward, toward
the 3rd eye—
Hold the breath for a moment, allowing yourself to
make a conscious connection with your breath.
As you gently exhale out through your nose,
release your mind and feel the light deeply infusing
into your pineal gland
Repeat this breathing pattern two more times
Ancient theories and practices with cannabis as spiritual
medicine suggest that by activating or “lighting up” our
pineal gland during our waking hours, we can help the pineal
gland rest more deeply while we sleep.
The addition of cannabis medicine while you are performing
the above practice, may allow you to notice greater clarity
or feelings of peace and calm.
