All about the Organisation
Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s
University Hospitals NHS Trust was established on 1st
April 2001 following the merger of Central Manchester
Healthcare NHS Trust and Manchester Children’s
Hospitals NHS Trust.
Our Trust is located in Manchester, just two miles outside the
city centre. It is the leading Trust for teaching, research and
specialist services in the North West of England. We provide
an extensive range of district general hospital services to
the local population of 166,000 residents within central
Manchester and tertiary and specialist services to patients
from across the North West and beyond.
We are a centre of excellence for healthcare research with a
long standing and extremely successful academic partnership
with The University of Manchester. The success of this
partnership now sees the Trust as one of a small number
of organisations in England who have attained Biomedical
Research Centre (BRC) status. We collaborate closely with
other NHS organisations in Greater Manchester and have
strong links with institutions within Manchester such as
the City Council and across the North West and beyond
including the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
We are made up of six hospitals:
■ Booth Hall Children’s Hospital (BHCH)
■ Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH)
■ Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI)
■ Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH)
■ Saint Mary’s Hospital (SMH)
■ University Dental Hospital of Manchester (UDH)
Due to the large size of the organisation, the Trust is
managed by grouping together those departments who
work closely. There are called Divisions and are as follows:
■ Children’s (incorporating Booth Hall and Royal
Manchester Children’s Hospitals)
■ Clinical and Scientific Services
■ Ophthalmic (Eye Hospital)
■ Dental Hospital
■ Medical
■ Saint Mary’s Hospital
■ Surgical
■ Research & Innovation

Children’s Hospital
Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown
visited the new children’s hospital on
22nd September 2008, to see how
the development was progressing
and how money raised by The New
Children’s Hospital Appeal will make a
difference to the lives of children and
their families who will utilise this new
hospital.
Sarah, was joined by Appeal
Chairman Maurice Watkins and
Appeal Patrons Philip and Julie Neville.
